I realize just now that I buy my PS3 games with that price too, but I've never had my jaw drop from a price like that because I really don't buy PC games.
So to be honest, this is going to be one of the first PC game I'm actually going to buy.
I saw a Starcraft II poster with the sign: Now Reserving! I went to ask them how much it would be, and there they say, it's 60 dollars. (It's really 3000 bucks locally, but just to Americanize this post)
So right now, I'm starting to collect money (And get more than the usual lunch money I get from my mom). I'm also going to be selling copies of games and movies to my classmates now.
Then something went in my mind. This game has three/two expansion packs. I heard that they won't be released at the same time. So are you freaking saying that I'm going to be buying 1/3 of the actual game?
PS:
I'm saying 1/3 because they'll be finish with creating this game as a whole, yet they'll be splitting it into 3/2 expansion packs.
So, am I really buying 1/3 of the actual game?

the expansions will probably take a year at least after to be released, or close to (just my random guess, but they wont rush it i dont imagine). and once teh expansions are out, you can still play the first wings of liberty. so you arent forced to buy any expansions, but you could pretty feel forced as who wants to just play the first part when 90%+ will be on the expansion.
angered you have to buy another (probably, cheaper 45$ expansion, but just my guess again) part of the sc puzzle? well, sorry thats the way it goes i guess. im glad there are expansions as theyll be actively giving us more and more to experience and play for the coming couple years (without the monthyl WoW charge, at least so far). and its not like theyre going to release the expansion a month later, so youll have plenty of time to stash your lunch money or get a job to easily pay for it before then. thats my 2 cents.
Its more like you are buying the game for the next 1-3 years. Than when the expansion come out you have to buy it again or you have to play without that which will be totally uncool.D
Expansions isnt the game 1/3, its like a big update as they will probably dont touch the engine and the main stuffs. However I hope they will work atleast 2-3 years on the expansion and it will have lots of new stuff (like models... there is so few model in this game compared to warcraft 3 TFT).
Blizzard game are really worth it. I played all the games for more than a year, and I've already spent thousands of hours on Starcraft 2. Let say you play 120 hours, it costs you 0.5$ the hour. I mean, nothing is cheaper!
It's not unusual to spend $30 during a night, consider it's 2 nights :)
i agree with you 100% but i dont think were having to save lunch money like homeboy up top. haha. so i udnerstand his pain but think hes a little bit overreacting and hell be just fine.
your logic vjeux, used to help me reaffirm all the wasted hours of my life on WoW. if you break it down into hours of gameplay vs 30# monthly it seems like a great option for gaming. now, i no longer go by this form of logic as it has led me terribly astray in the past. haha. but yes, sc2 will rule with many upon many hours of great fun- :)
and @hookah, you are right there are far too few models currently in game. and i dont know what to expect upon release, but i do know there are a handful of models in the editor that we dont have access to atm. so i would wait till launch to see what they actually give us access to model-wise. i know there are already lurker attack (spine attack things) animation models, civilian cars, etc.... so well see, there is a huge campaign coming at us, theyll have to use more models than they currently have, so well jsut have to wait and see. but, maybe then i will complain with you after the 27th. :)
And then the expansion packs have more units that aren't in the beta?
Edit: Oh and I'm not agonizing :D I just want to know if I have to pay more than 60 dollars this year alone.
Edit 2: Oh and one more thing. I thought they made a final product and then plan to split it into 3 expansion packs. From what HamsterBallz say, they won't do it like that. So I guess there's nothing to ask anymore.
No. The multiplayer will be somewhat like the Beta but with everything, like more maps and all that good stuff. The campaign however is completely different. It's sort of like a Dawn of War II style. You choose missions from your ship and complete them for stuff. The Campaign will have a slew of new units that just couldn't fit into Multiplayer. For example, there will be Firebats, Goliaths, Scourge, Lukers, etc. So I think it's worth $60. Plus, the examples will be about $40 because they really only hold a new Campaign for you to play as Protoss, and Zerg in their own giant campaings spanning over 50+ hours. So I think it's worth it.
I love how Blizzard is really damned either way. If they said "Sorry we aren't releasing any expansions for SC2" people would be furious. And if they released a single expansion people would be asking for another, just like they have with every single Blizzard game ever made (which since WC2 have all had expansions.)
So they decide they'll do two, and now they're moneygrubbing whores who are selling the game 1/3 at a time. Man, it's a no win situation for them.
Haha well, from their perspective and mine, it's a win-win. I'm happy to shell out cash for a Blizzard game, as long as they maintain the level of quality they always have. When you think about how much time you spend playing a game like SC2, 60 bucks is a bargain compared to pretty much any other form of media. But I'm talking about the complainers - no matter what they'll find something to complain about.
and remember one more thing: when you are buying Starcraft, not only you are buying the BEST RTS on the market (I'm sure of this) but you are buying a LOT of minigames/mods/custom maps each one of them is worth playing, so i think i's a good deal, even if i agree that 60$ + another 45-60$ for each expansion is pretty much money
Each expansion should give numerous updates to gameplay (multiplayer), new units (for campaign and multiplayer), new tilesets, new maps, larger maps (on one of them at least), updates to the GE, and probably a few other things. They release small stuff in patches, they release entirely new and huge things (ie: new campaigns) in expansions.
I'm surprised that i don't see more threads that say: "I'M ONLY PAYING 60 BUCKS?!!?!?!?!" here's my logic:
1. $60 is the new $50...Video games have gone up $10 in the past 10 years, and the market has increased as well. With this market expansion, even more intelligent and creative people have gone into the video game industry - I think it's safe to say Starcraft 2 is at least 1/5th better made (the $10) than any PS1/2 or Xbox game or any game that Nintendo has ever released, purely just because of the man hours that have been put into the creation of this project. (If you also include all the data collected from beta testers as man hours, Blizzard has easily topped the list of man hours put into a single product)
2. Starcraft 2 isn't just Starcraft 2. Hell, I would pay for the campaign alone for $60. What else am I getting? Pretty much the biggest variety of games made by the most creative people on the planet - something not even Apple's iTunes store for the iTouch could compete with, simply because of the editor's power, flexibility, and user-availability. (You don't even have to know any coding language to get your hands dirty)
3. Finally, and here's the kicker, you won't have to play for Battle.net. You know why I'm confident in saying that? Blizzard has already said that it won't be forcing people to pay in order to play online. It would be like facebook announcing a user fee - the biggest outrage against a single company since the BP oil spill.
And that, my friends, is why I'm more than happy to shell out a gas tank and a half in order to play the most anticipated game...ever.
Yea it's really funny how people start raging about the most normal things ( Yea, Vicboy, you aren't raging. But a lot of people do).
When Blizzard released Warcraft III: Rain of Chaos the people were like "Yep, a damn fine game."
When they released Warcraft III: Frozen Throne the people were like "Wow, this addon makes it really awesome. Well worth it!"
Do people think they that Blizzard didn't plan this addon in the first place? Of course they did!
Same with all the other companies.
When Relic releases a new addon to Dawn of War II it's not a sudden change of mind but the execution of a plan that they've had since they made the original -.-
The only thing that Blizzard did different now was to reveal that information to the public. And suddenly everyone is raging about how Blizzard wants their money even though they do the same they always did.
And you also don't have to pay 3x60 bucks for the game. People seem to forget that expansions are cheaper.
Of course it's still a lot of money, but as vjeux said: It'll still be cheaper than pretty much any other game or thing out there.
Standing in the parking lot is more expensive.. and less fun ^.^
It's sad to say but the broad public is so incredibly stupid and shallow-brained that it almost physically hurts me.
Luckily we here at mapster are largely immune to the maddening influence of the public's delusions.

Anyway, so the beta + campaign = this product?

I think it's a Win - Win. . .
You aren't thinking about this.
No Expansions - BIG PROFIT
1 Expansions - BIGGER PROFIT
2 Expansions - MEGA PROFIT
I think it's a Win - Win.

This is All-In-One! Once you have Starcraft 2 in your hands you won't need to buy another game!

1. campaign said to be 20-30 hours which is average for most video games.
2. Galaxy editor rpg, tower defense, variety etc...
3. blizzard actually patch their games for several years unlike most game companies.
4. blizzard dont release a half assed full game once a year.
5. "free" beta was fun
6. 60 dollars is normal for activision games. Activision Blizzard inc.
7. blizzard is a good company proven by several years sure they made a few mistakes ie starcraft 64.
8. multiplayer you know theres going to be a lot of people playing
9. pc and mac only so not a shitty port
10. Blizzard always releases an expansion. Scbw wc3ft diablo 2 lod diablo 1 hellfire wow . so whats one more?
11. wings of liberty is a full game not a third of a game.
12. if they release it all together then the game will be incomplete and rushed.
13. by breaking it up they can focus more on patches
14 they patched the game every week or so in beta phase 1 15 times.
15 probably will add new units or something to expansions to entice people to buy expansions too
