Hello everybody, this is my second post here, my first being a simple question in the Data section.
I play a lot of the map Storm of the Imperial Sanctum, and for quite some time enjoyed it. However, recently the game feels extremely forced, and I have a lot of ideas about the MOBA genre that I would implement were I in control.
So, I decided, why not make my own MOBA?
Kind of a ridiculous idea considering a few things: There are a lot of MOBAs, there are more coming, and I know nothing about the Galaxy Editor. But, SotIS actually managed to garner a decent following for quite some time, despite LoL, HoN, and DotA. It was only when the gameplay actually went south that its community started heading to other games. As for my experience with the editor, I was shocked to learn that there is no documentation. After finding a really useful guide here, I learned quite quickly.
First thing I decided to do was program in simple crowd-control effects. After only my first three days, I have a working Stun, Root, Silence, and Disarm. Right now I'm working on Movement Speed and Weapon Damage buffs and debuffs.
I figured I'd sign up to subject you all to my questions! This seems like a pretty awesome forum.
I do trust the you'll keep us updated with news on your project? Also, it wouldn't hurt to try to recruit some workless people around here if you need any help on this project :)
Also, inb4 almaity asking your for a round of drinks ;)
Thanks for your replies! I will definitely keep you informed. Is there any particular place that I should do so?
Anyways, for right now, I am still working on simple crowd-control abilities, that I hope will serve as good templates for all the abilities that actually make it into hero designs. Thus far I have:
Silence (No abilities, Excepting Movements and Attacks)
Stun (No abilities, Suppress Movement and Turning)
Root (Suppress Movement)
Disarm (Attacks Disabled)
Daze (Uncommandable)
I also have simple percentage Movement Speed and Attack Damage buffs and debuffs. I'm already having a problem here: when both a buff and a debuff are applied, the debuff seems to take priority and the buff barely affects the Movement Speed. Ideally, I would have both the buff and the debuff affect Movement Speed based on the initial Movement Speed, but I don't know how.
I've also started learning how to make ability levels and an ability leveling ability. Haven't gotten very far, but I'm guessing that the ability leveling ability works with charges.
I'd love some help on the project! But... I can't exactly pay anybody.
I'd recommend starting a thread in the Project Workplace, which you can find by scrolling down the forum page a little bit. Also, don't feel that you need to pay others working on your project; most of us modders never even expect any pay for our work.
It looks pretty straightforward, but I feel like I'm probably doing much more than I need to be. For example, I made a trigger for the map initialization to replace the usual melee initialization, and had to create an action for every player to give them 500 minerals.
I feel like if I let myself go with it, I'll end up having a lot of triggers with a lot of actions.
Really, I guess what I need in response to this is, what is the best way to learn all the functions of the Trigger editor? I can't seem to find a guide that explains the basics.
Don't use a guide. Figure it out on your own. It's the best way.
I did use a video guide (on arrays of all things) and simply examined every single thing the guy did twice to understand some of the basic functions.
But when it comes down to it, you're right. It took my own fooling around with it, several tries, and several fails, to come up with some cool triggers.

As do I.
