It isn't. Depending on your perspective. As far as the universe is concerned, "life" doesn't matter. It's just a side effect.
You *are* a slave of your brain (though that statement is misleading, because you ARE your brain, essentially).
You can want to not be a result of chemical reactions and synapses all you want, it doesn't change the reality that that *is* what you are. That feeling itself is a result of your brain and the reactions that go on inside of it every moment of the day.
Actually it isn't. People say: "life is important for us". But they lie to themselves. It's not obvious, but the only thing is important for them is pleasure. If life maintance would be rewarded with pain and suicide attempts would be rewarded with pleasure, all ppl would just die pretty soon. They don't care about life, they care about pleasure. They don't pursue living, they avoid pain and pursue pleasure. Example: heroin users. They know they will die, but they aren't ready to pay with suffer for life, they just do more shots.
Another subject of interest is the evolution itself. Life is her child (yeah, in russian evolution is 'she'). And it looks like she cares about it. She created pain/pleasure reward system to force living creatures to keep their lifes safe. But does evolution realy "think" that life is important? No, she's blind and doesn't care at all. Evolution only follows the laws of physics. Actualy she is those laws. She's trying random things, most of these experiments die, no wonder the creatures with pain/pleasure system survived.
So, the fact that evolution gave us this system doesn't mean that she consider life as important thimg, it only means that this system increases probability to survive.
So, nor people not evolution think life is important. And there is no more subjects who could care. Except the creator of the universe, but we have no information about what created it, and modern theories say that it was a random event without any creators.
Thank you guys. I got an answer, although it sucks.
It seems that no matter how further we go here, we will all in the end reach the same answer:
"It's important because we were programmed to do so."
It is how our brain was developed. And even if we assume we have a soul, the answer would be the same: "It was programmed to do so." In the end, it comes down to laws of nature. I guess we are robots. And even if we have souls, our souls are just robots following unknown laws of physics. I hope I'm wrong because it sucks to be a robot.
6:45am and this existential anxiety doesn't let me sleep.
Why should anything suck about what universe is and how it work? Universe is motherfucking exists, can you believe it? We all got used to this amazing fact, and underestimating the meaning of it. I'd rather expect to find an endless empty nothing instead. But it's still present and complicated as fuck. Just learn physics and biology. It's so overloaded with magic and soul, so It just have to explode being unable to hold all this unimaginable beauty inside.
We are creatures bound by nature, but it does not mean our choices are futile. While the pursuit of happiness may be a biological response to basic human nature, it's by no means the only goal in life. If you're looking for answers for life, religion and/or philosophy is what you're looking for. Personally, I live by the rule that life is meant to be lived not discussed about. There is no meaning to life because life is what we make of it.

It's up to you whether you're a robot or not. Only a robot will tell you otherwise.
This thread seems excessively scientific, where I think it should be more philosophical and poetic. Everything in the universe can be explained with the science behind the mechanics, but I don't even think that's very relevant to answer the questions of: Why is love important? Why is happiness important? Why does life matter?
People say that an individual is insignificant. They will cynically tell you you're one of billions on this planet right now, and thousands of generations of people just like you have come, lived, and died. The universe is incomprehensibly large, there may even be infinite parallel universes, or universes that came before this one. The geological time scale is immense compared to your worthless life. Right?
WRONG
Each person has an entire universe of existence inside their own minds. Consciousness, thought, feelings, ambition, desire, memories. These things form together to create an amazing existence inside of you.
Life matters because each life is a universe in itself. The physical universe we live in is enormous, but it has no ability to perceive or wonder. It can't be appreciated (or hated) without the aid of each of our own personal universes of existence.
Once you've established that life does in fact matter, it becomes easier to answer why happiness and love are so important. Among many reasons, love and happiness profoundly improve the quality of your own universe.
@RodrigoAlves: Go
because your depressed, and hate your own life. :P
wrong. To question why something is important does not mean I don't find it important. I just want to know why.

Did you actualize yourself? Gratitude is the elusive feeling you describe, gratitude to the actualizer to which you owe your authentic existence.
It's up to you whether you're a robot or not. Only a robot will tell you otherwise.
I'm a robot. More specifically, a gundam robot. With a santa hat.
