Interesting, and sad. That's how Curse works. I find it really amusing, in a sort of pathetic way, how they can yank it right from out under him. I would imagine that was a big contributor to why he doesn't bother with the site too much anymore. I know it would kill my motivation. But he did sell it, so he had to see it coming.
If I was the one with the helm I would steer clear of the Curse harbor for good, but doing so would dramatically affect the site because of the address and name associated with it. If it were possible to keep the domain but jump, I could not encourage you enough to do so if you could find the resources. But if you were to lose the domain it may not be worth it, given sc2mapster is the only active sc2 mapping site I know of, and I have seen similar events kill much more stable communities.
In the stead, I would suggest to have more active moderation to combat the bots. I would offer to do it, but I unfortunately cannot guarantee I would even be active here, as I don't mesh well with the people. It just seems like I see bots every single time I come on, which, admittedly, it's terribly often. What really needs to happen is a major revision to the registration system to catch bots more aggressively. There are some tricks to bait bots into being caught that can be used to safely autoban them, and bots have gotten past most if not all major captcha systems.
I thought he made Diablofans and then curse bought diablofans but contracted him to lead the site, then was offered to make SC2Mapster as part of the curse network but when he quitted from DFans his curse contract got terminated (obviously).
Also, Mesk, like we've said. There's nothing we can do except deleting their topics and banning them. If you try to register right now you'll see how ridiculous it is. A simple captcha would catch almost all of these bots. I seriously doubt they're using some sort of special super-bot that passes through captchas. But we can't change that anyway, curse has to.
And even if we said YES LETS GET MORE MODS 1. We can't assign them and 2. We have by far enough mods for a site that's as inactive as this.
really, I come here every night and before bedtime and I catch most of the topics mozared doesn't catch throughout the day. But when I go to bed I know the're some bots going in the period of 2AM-5AM before another mod comes...
On top of what Corbo said, assigning mods would be a real issue. Only the guys I listed in my previous post can actually promote people to that role, and I wouldn't know how to get in contact with any of them. I suppose if we really pursued the issue we may be able to get it done; ex-Mapster mod Molsterr has been working for Curse for a long time and I'm sure he'd be able to get the ball, or at least a marble rolling for us. The question is to what extent it is worth it. I'm not even sure who we'd want as additional moderators.

It's simply what I remember from back in the day. I haven't been around since Mapster's inception, but I joined when it was still pretty young. Back then Sixen and Vjeux were in firm control of the site, and Curse wasn't mentioned in any way until a couple months in. Here's some old threads about it. My memory may be a bit fuzzy, but I don't believe Curse was involved at first.
Geez. What a mess. I knew it was bad for mapster but I didn't think it was this bad.
Yeah, you do have a lot of mods. That's why I thought there was a mix of mods and admins (I was convinced for a time you both were admins). I would just axe the people who aren't actually doing mod work and then go from there. But....
To me, this admin situation is a far more severe issue than the bots. The bots are irritating, but they're clearly a symptom of a far larger problem at the heart of the site. I've often times wondered why there were no major updates to any part of mapster. It all becomes clear, now. The site is in desperate need of being polished and fixed. You need the site in the hands of someone who is actually a custom content developer and not some extension from an ad company.
I may not be a fan of sc2 and most people here probably hate me, but I still wish you the best of luck in figuring it all out.
Wait, you're telling me there's no actual person on this board who has
admin powers? Are you joking? I thought Sixen et all were admins?
Sixen was an admin, a long time ago. He sold the site to Curse, stayed
on for quite a while as a paid Curse employee, and was then told he was
going to lose his admin status because Curse no longer wanted to pay
him. AFAIK he then had a talk with Curse and stayed on for free, but I
still believe he's lost his admin privileges. I can ban his account,
anyway, I know that much (Edit: I don't know how much that says,
actually, I can ban every single Curse employee listed below). He hasn't
really been around for ages either way and only ever still updates the
front page with news occasionally, aside from doing some general
maintenance/bot banning. Looking at his log, he did two things on April
28, two things on April 10, and some more things on April 7.
The Curse admins assigned to Mapster are Kaelten, Torhal and Prencher.
The latter did some random site security updates on March 5 (but hasn't
been here since February before that), Kaelten is around even less than
Sixen and though Torhal is banning spammers on a daily basis, he has
never even communicated with the mod team, AFAIK.
Hey now, while I don't read every thread of the forums, I do check the site daily.
To those wondering: the guy who made DiabloFans sold it to Curse in 2009. I was brought on as the community manager for DiabloFans. I had been a huge SC1 mapper back in the day and brought this up to the people at Curse who make decisions. Turned out, they were working on SC2Mapster behind the scenes, and they brought me on while it was in development to help make suggestions/decisions regarding how the site would turn out. I then took over the site and grew it from 1 person (myself) to the community that it became. Vjeux was assigned to help me with whatever I needed, at the time, he was a developer intern, or something of the sort.

which is why you are just now responding to a thread from back in may? XD
I didn't know that Sixen actually made and sold the site. Must've been worth a fair bit back when sc2 was being released.

I'm sorry but this response was priceless xD
Sorry Sixen :P
I'm not sorry. Sixen never told me his sc1 fursona. He somehow knows me but I don't know him. The mystery is too intense. 3edgy4me
