I don't see FDFederation saying anything about religion, and the URLs he posted don't seem religious (I didn't open any links from here, except for the one with "warp drive" until now as I don't feel like reading much atm)
Why don't we put in the same rule as from the debate thread:
This thread is not about religion in any way or form, so posts about religion/the earlier religion thread are simply going to be deleted (Please don't reply to such posts as that would just make the thread look messy to anyone who looks into this after the post was deleted)
I won't delete links that link to something that mentions religion though, as long as its not trying to prove/disprove religion/science and merely a scientific view of something religious (Can't think of good examples of this and highly doubt it will happen anyway)
I play Starcraft and Program... So yea... I do like science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics.
And i would assume if u are on these forums that you also play Starcraft and Program... If this is meant to be a debate thread i think that it is pretty 1 sided here.
Uh... what debate? Why does everybody think there is some strange mystically obscured debate here? Okay, EVERYBODY READ THIS: THERE IS NO F* * *ING DEBATE. WE ARE ONLY FINDING INTERESTING TOPICS TO LOOK AT.
It's extremely exciting because if they can achieve success then they've got existence proof, which is the tipping point when it comes to actually getting the technology put into practice. At 10 c, we'd be able to get to Gliese in like 2 years.
This "way of science" you speak of won't fix what's wrong with us. If it did, one would expect immediate assistance from a benevolent intergalactic community. But, it hasn't happened.

You're making quite a big assumption that humanity deserves the infinite/undivided attention of the galaxy/universe. If people aren't willing to assist endangered species who share common evolutionary ancestors with us, who live with us on our own planet, (or even members of our own species) why would you expect free handouts from aliens? Rhetorical question: Do you spend your time actively looking for worms, ants, beetles, etc and try to help them? So, just stop trying to hijack the thread. If you want to argue against science, go make a thread specifically for arguing. This thread is for posting informative links to topics related to science.
That's precisely my point. We don't deserve it, but it has nothing to do with a lack of scientific understanding. Your analogies only follow insomuch that humanity may be characterized with benevolence.
I too share a keen interest in the underlying mathematics that operate reality. But without a discussion on how science relates to the human condition, science threads have no relevance. I'm just trying to give it some.
Besides, you can't expect a profile pic like that prefacing everything you say to not scream "ulterior motive." It's contentious by design, so contention is what comes of it.
EDIT: If "social engineering" falls under engineering, I may have some articles for you.
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are just cool.
If you want to make fun of my avatar and argue, go make another thread and I'll confront you there, but not here. This thread is for posting informative links to topics related to science.
Social engineering is to engineering as astrology is to astronomy.

intergalactic community assumption has nothing to do with science its scifi. But anyway, if aliens would contact with us, that would be mean they are against diversity, so we would be most likely destroyed instantly.
I had two choices:
1. Disavow the driving philosophy behind the thread, like dismissable evidence in court
2. Challenge the underlying premise that scientific advancement is invariably good
This is only the rosy side of science. Its perils are not represented. It is a moral imperative that they are. It's not about luddhism, it's about setting priorities. The human race at present is woefully unfit for the type of supertechnology that may be just over the horizon. The solution is social reform, not to dig up Pandora's Box.
EDIT: I should correct myself that the peril lies not in science itself, but man. To wit, science doesn't kill people, people kill people!
But without a discussion on how science relates to the human condition, science threads have no relevance.
Science is a glorious manifestation of our humanity. It has lifted us above the petty toils of day-to-day survival and given us the capacity to think and make educated decisions not only about the universe, but morals as well. It allows us to pursue things such as art, literature, and create something that will help future generations, something more than just ensuring that we survive till the next day - a wretched and empty existence if you ask me. As Newton said "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." People died in droves before modern antibiotics & surgery. Science has improved the quality of life for countless people. I daresay it has been worth it, even considering that it's a double-edged sword.

So let's just keep this scientific, shall we?

Anything that warps space-time enough to push the ship. I heard that it needs to use something with negative mass: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_mass
Which, unfortunately, is only hypothetical. They require 500 kilograms of it, which is way beyond our present capability. But the cool thing is that they've already started testing this on a microscopic level, in which they use plasma:
