is it possible to take over editing a custom no longer being updated? There is a custom map I enjoy playing like many others with a large player base. It has not been updated in over a year and the main editors have long left. They handed it off to another player but he made 1 edit and then also stopped.... if possible, I would like to try to take over editing the map and keep it updated.
I doubt there is a way without an actual hand off, but here is to hoping.
You won't be able to update the exact map that is in bnet as each map reserves it's name forever and is forever bound to account that uploaded it.
If original owners give you mapfile then you can edit it and upload your separate version. Same if they left it unlocked in bnet (making it available to be downloaded by everyone trough editor, tho in 90% of cases people lock their maps). If they can't be reached or don't want to give you the file it's probably better to remake the thing from a scratch.
There are ways to steal maps, but that removes your ability to edit triggers trough GUI, and well... other people's code is usually hell and without knowing why and how original authors made their maps you'll just go insane as changing one thing will usually make other things break and you'll end up being stuck in infinite loop of trying to find out how and why one unrelated thing breaks so many others.
Thanks! Unfortunately the original care takers are long gone by about 2 years and the website that they hosted for it is offline now. I have not seen the player they handed the game off to either in probably 2 years or so as well. I am going to check to see if they did leave it unlocked as that seems to be the only play I have left. I do know this code is already hell as this game has been imported from SC1 custom and modified. So I do know the guys who were working it complained often about how messy it was. Okay Thanks!
