Thank you for your input. This will not be more than a few months because it is a light-hearted contest, not a call for the best maps ever to exist. The scope needs to be clear and we can't just let a deadline creep out for months and months and months.
We're between 2 or 3 months right now and 3 is on the table mostly so that anyone who finds out about it late can still jump in. RTC was 3 months and a lot of folks appeared to pick it up late and submit right near the end so mimicking that seems appropriate.

My most interesting ideas tend to come late at night. So I'm happy to report that last night I got out of bed and typed up some ideas for a map for this contest :D . I'm thinking of doing a side story mission in the Mapsters campaign.
Looking back at the rules, is it ok for it to be in the same universe as an existing campaign? It'll have some lore tie ins, but otherwise I plan on making it from scratch (terrain, data, triggers/etc) in the spirit of the competition. I'll wait to start working on the actual map file til the contest officially starts. Just writing down ideas for now.
At first I didn't like the idea of having only 3 months, but this is a good way to not let maps get out of hand; focus on small 10-30 minute maps. I guess you wouldn't mind if the map was for co-op but also possible to play alone (like SotX)?

That should be fine. If Jay or Deltron have other ideas then they'll hop in, but as far as I'm aware the only prerequisites for a map to be eligible are possible to play in single player and designed from scratch in SC1/SC2/WC3.

Yep, I don't see any reason why this would be an issue. As long as you don't sample a level or a script or whatever from other maps I doubt we'd dock you points or anything.
Might be they make up the categories if there are many entries. This is also the first contest of its kind, so I guess its also some sort of test-run.
sure, but at least some mention that they'd consider categories would be good. Right now we're at just complete silence except for 1st place and rules.
We had no idea how to forecast realistic participation. I'd like to split the games into their own categories, but only if we have at least 3 participants per game, which seems like a lot for a community run contest. We'll see how it goes. There is no point making it more detailed for absolutely no reason, especially if there is low participation, but feel free to expand your thoughts for us. I can't glean anything from "I'm disappointed" with no elaboration.
The prizes and overall stakes are purposefully low here and it's more to give a basic excuse for folks to show off their mapmaking chops and have them showcased to a large audience. The reason is to encourage someone to participate even if they don't necessarily intend to be the absolute best, plus it also makes it easier for us as administrators too.

as I already mentioned to deltron via PM's, I think that there should be "honorable mentions" (rewards not necessary) for the best of a certain map type (perhaps something like "best holdout map", whatever). Of course this only should be done if there's enough entries for such a thing, but I hope that this would encourage some cross platform competition.
This is a good idea, we'll have to revisit if we have enough entrants. Deltron added a line to the info channel saying the "rewards" may change if enough people submit :)

Submit or die, that's what Zant from Twilight Princess always says!

With WC3 rpgs, the best maps were 4 years in the making before they even hit public beta.

Apparently the contest has started running now.
Am a little disappointed that it has no categories.
