Seems like many maps in the top 10 played or rated maps have been abandoned by their original developers; specifically Desert Strike and Special Forces are maps that haven't received updates in a very long time. Newer versions of both of them exist, made by people involved in their original teams, but they have no chance to get play time while the originals exist and people just keep jumping to their bookmarks.
I understand it wouldn't be fair to necessarily remove the work on someone who worked hard on their map, so honestly I'm not sure what the right course of action would be. Maybe maps automatically become unpublished if they don't receive any updates after six months, or players should be able to mark a map as "abandoned" so it can be manually removed by a staff member when a new version is present.
I wish there could be a possibility to deliver rights to edit and update a map to someone so the map won't be abandoned.
Thus It can save stats in the same banks so people who would like to play the fresher version will not have to lose their stats because of the map has a new author and its banks are saved in another folder.
Also the map won't lose its rates and bookmarks.
Just dreams... :)
For now, I think maps don't need to be removed from BNet. If they are abandoned and they are in a special list then after some time without updates they must be removed from there but still allowed to play them. If someone wishes to make his version of the map - let him do it but there always has to be a possibility to play the old one version even if it is abandoned. Just because newer doesn't mean better. As for chance to get play time of a new map... it's in hands of author/team - they got to tell about their map as many people as they can and don't hope on BNet :)
I really understand you have a good intentions behind your suggestions. But you would just bring in the plagiarism to Bnet. People would claim maps for themeselves without author allowing it. Losing own work to some stranger.
I think this is a case of letting the market decide for itself. If people want to play something that hasn't been updated in over a year...you can't fix stupid.
I a hundred percent agree with that. People just dont see whats out there and could.so easily top the charts. I don't understand the attraction to poorly made maps like STD. Same thing EVERY time.

There is no problem to me so there is no need for sollution.
If author thinks his map is good enough, there aint any obligation to keep on updating.
People making copies of same maps and wanting them to replace already popular map is just pretty weird to begin with.
I hate these threads.
