Hi everyone,
I've just sent a mail to Blizzard, asking them if it is allowed to use WoW and WC3 models and sounds in a SC2 mod, and eventually musics to add on presentation videos. As far as I know, Blizzard has never forbidden or allowed that, and many maps have been published using WoW models.
What the hell is that response (summed up and approximately translated)?
"We read your mail, and you should check our policies to aknowledge that extracting files from our clients is forbidden.
...blabla check about videos creation (I don't care, I only wanted to make trailers -_-') and others policies to learn about how you can use pictures and musics from our brand for websites and third-persons.
However, we wish you some courage for your creations and we hope you will share it once achieved."
My last translated sentence is quite approximative, but hell, do they think I will develop a full mod if I can't even upload it ? I'm sure the sense of this mail is a bit lost, but even in my own language I don't get it.
Have you ever heard something about that ? Any map suspended, account banned for uploading map using WoW resources and background ? Don't want to waste more time.
I haven't heard of a single map banned for copyright infringement yet, and I wouldn't worry about WoW models - There is no reason why blizzard would disallow the use of their own models in their own games.
Well, I have had email exchanges with Blizz people before about this, as well as just observing their actions (or lack of) on people doing this and what it seems to boil down to is the people I talked to couldn't say yes from a legal standpoint, but as long as it's kept 'in the family' (IE, Blizz assets in Blizz games) it's ok. The one exception I've seen is with assets from betas before the game is released or unreleased games (such as a WC3 mod way back being developed for SC1)
Another example worth noting is back on the old Battle.net mod page for Warcraft 3, Blizz themselves released StarCraft and WoW Icon packs for use in WC3, as well as featuring maps using WoW models in their fan map spoitlight feature.
So as I say, I don't think Blizz minds if we use models from other Blizz games in our maps and mods :)
They won't give a perfect legal ok, cause especailly with Activision in the picture now they need to do some serious CYA .
But they won't take any action against you or the map as long as its a "Fully - released asset".
There are some I've seen that have HotS assets (like the new 'semi-zerg kerrigan-ghost on sterriods-nova you are soo screwed' model) that you can use. They will take action against use of that until HotS is actually released.
Which brings me to my next point. KERRIGAN IS A FREAKING REDHEAD. REDHEADS DON'T TAN THEY BURN...
Shes got waaaay darker complexion in the actual game than she does in the cinamatic scene in WoL...
I've read somewhere that they would not allowed stuff from HotS even after the release in WoL. Anyway it's quite hard to get such models no? The beta is still so far away.
Blizzard did not allow people to put WC3: TFT units into WC3: RoC. It's very likely that they will do the same for WoL and HotS.
Blizzard's never going to tell you it's okay to use their assets for anything. That said, no map has ever been banned for using blizzard models inside, and blizzard even featured maps using WoW models on their official Facebook page. If you stick to blizzard models, you shouldn't run into any issues.

Feel free to Send me a PM if you have any questions/concerns!
Yep, know that. I was doubting after their response, and I am a little frightened because my WC mod contains only resources from the WarCraft games. Even heroes have their original names (Arthas & co), while it is also forbidden in the chart.

Using any Blizzard asset is not forbidden as long as you use them in another Blizzard game.

Pretty much its a case of this:
