Hi guyz, just signed up to ask a few questions and stuff.
Im wondering something if its posible to do in Starcraft2.
We all know the cool part about Blizzards Diablo 1 2 3 is the actual Gear and spells when it comes to looks.
What im wondering is is it posible, to implement a Hero Alteration System like this :
1. Hero picks up "item / gear"
2. Item / Gear gets applied to sayd Hero
3. Does it act as an Atachment to a model ? or Does it have to be "modeled on the hero ?
4. Why im wondering this is because im thinking of starting to mod a bit and wold like to make such a system.
5. Wold be cool to see RPGS have this in S2.
6. Im a modeller and if thers modeling ive got no problem with that, Nor assets creation and so on.
7. Why i want to do this : I hate the generic Model, and i want models to have more of a customizable feeling to them, and have their own versions of stuff much like diablo makes 2 heroes of the same class stand out in diferent ways.
8. Thankyou for reading and i hope this is not a hard thing to do !
Ow yeah, i did a few searches and didnt find anything, if thers been a thread that answers this, then just lead the way !
There are generally 2 kind of common ways this is done in games (MMO's, RPGS), from what I have read.
Mesh hiding. Basically you need to create all of your heroes with different variations of armor/gear in your model editor, and then in the game you tell them what variation to show.
Attachement. This is actually attaching separate models to the main model.
I suppose both might be possible, but either way, both are a lot of work. I don't know the specifics but I beleive most games that have customizable character systems (that allow you to change the avatar height etc) use mesh hiding, because it's more difficult to compensate for the different sizes when using attachements. It does depend a bit on how extreme the characters can vary as well.
Anyhow, so to answer your question.
Yes it is possible
Yes it is alot of work
I'd probably go for the attachment system in SC2 if I were to do it. If you can work it into your heroes, I think overall it is less work and much more flexible.
hmm. this sounds interesting ! if you have any clue related to it, post something ! or was it in this forum ? il do some searches ! will post if i find any valuable stuff !

I did see an example someone did of this very equiment thing
They did it with imported wow models and armor models from wow

but SouLCarveRR was talking of an other one. but can't find it anymore. that one used armour, weapons and everything.
