From the news I can say that there really isnt anything that impressive. That rainbow archon was more like WTF? thatn cool...
Oh and its was quite funny when he talked about trigger dialogs. Everyone can do this with trigger dialogs, its sooooo awesoooome!!!!! and It really isnt. Sure it looks nice, but its like the basic stuff of dialogs...
For all of you who are underwhelmed, Metzen mentioned in one of the interviews on Blizzcon that there was talk about weither or not it was worth hosting a Blizzcon because of the limited stuff they had to show, but they decided that the Blizzcon is more than just brand new PR and info, it's a community event, a chance for gamers who enjoy the same games to come together and talk about what they love most.
And I think they did a decent job at atleast getting some stuff out there, like the Demon Hunter class for Diablo 3 which looks amazing.
I also like the new models and doodads that come with Blizzard's custom maps = More stuff for us to play with.
Sure, it's not a OMGOMGOMG year for Blizzard to showcase stuff, but I'm enjoying it from my livestream, and will mostlikely enjoy tonight's (today for you Americans) panels.
Edit: Also, who was the guy promoting sc2mapster when he asked a question in one of the panels? I didn't hear his name right.
Edit 2: Also, Jay Mohr was not funny at all (to me, at least).
I am really underwhelmed by this year's Blizzcon as well.
- Concerns of the Custom Game list, popularity-based ranking or even Battle.net in general? Not even mentioned once.
- Mention of the custom map contest? Absolutely zero, are the submissions so embarrassing that they would rather pretend it never happened?
- Cross-region publishing? Nope.
- Some stats on the number of custom games made, played, etc? Nothing.
- General state of the scene? Blizzard's thought on it? Future direction? We have no idea.
To be fair, the last point is the only one they did extensively touch on. They mentioned they wanted to turn feedback into features at least a couple of times? What Zarakk said really pretty much pointed it out - they just didn't have a lot to show off from the Blizzard custom map side of things, so really all they could do was answer some questions. And in that area of expertise, most questions about "what will happen with new feature X" will simply be answered with "It might come in the future", because that's really how it is? The reason they're not really commenting about the popularity system is because A) the whining about it comes from a mach for of QQ babies and B) they've already said about five thousand times that virtually everything regarding 'custom maps' and Starcraft 2 is WIP.
Also, Zarakk, you're right. Jay Mohr is a total moron. Me and my buddies have been laughing over how horrible of a 'comedian' he is. He did make about four funny jokes during the costume/dancing contest yesterday, though, which is an improvement from last year =P
Meh, i couldnt watch the stream, to friggin late plus it was acting weird before that...
I already watched vids on youtube where they showed the map and stuff, but only got to hear the first two question. Is there a compilation of the questions anywhere or can someone give me a link? Thx.
Also, did i hear that right at Left 2 die. The guy said something about "pooling money together for more expensive researched, like the reaver". One: Did he actually say reaver? Two: With reaver, does he mean the SC1 reaver whose model has been cut from the editor for some reason?
Well, I have just finished watching the whole panel on youtube.
Many of my points are actually mentioned, at least, in the Q&A session. And my conclusion is the same, they are very unprepared. When many of the questions are asked, for example, the popularity system and how it is calculated. The impression they gave me is that it is the first time they have ever heard of it, which is ridiculous as it has been a major concern of not only mapmakers and anyone who plays custom games. And the funny thing is that they keep stressing the importance of feedbacks, and yet, most feedbacks, if not all, seem to be ignored.
This may read like a QQ post, but it is not. A convention takes a huge amount of effort to do, and these guys have just churned out one of the biggest RTS and two more to go. So it is understandable the outcome is such, but this is simply below the usual Blizzard standard. And foremost, I think we need a better communication channel between the community (mapmakers) and the devs.
That's because the people in the panel literally have nothing to do with how battle.net deals with custom maps. It was a panel with nothing but level designers; why would you expect them to be able to answer questions about battle.net? You might as well have asked the art or lore panels.
They should have had a battle.net panel with designers and engineers who work specifically on battle.net features, but I think they avoided that because they figured it would get pretty nasty.
Actually I think it's more of the fact that they're NOT the Bnet team, and it is the Bnet team's responsibility to deal with the popularity system; thus if they were internally thinking "YES WE WANT IT TO CHANGE TOO", they can't really say that because it'd basically be a big middle finger to the people they work with.
Well, that's why I think they were hesitating on it.
Yeah I agree they should probably have put a battle.net guy on the panel or even had a battle.net panel of its own, I'm just saying you can't be too hard on level designers for not answering questions about battle.net.
Kind of surprised they didn't announce the contest winners during the panel but to be honest the entire contest was run horribly. Supposedly the winners would be playable at BlizzCon but it seems like that didn't happen either. Seems like they just didn't really devote any resources to running the contest which is disappointing for those of us who put a lot of work into our entries.

True, they wont feature a bnet team to avoid confrontation, basically the only mistake and failure from blizzard is the bnet 2.0.
Also given the nature that blizzard has grown into a big coporate with ppl in one department have no idea what others do, its not the same blizzard as before.
It seems like the map winner is playable there, but no one cares because of blizzard dota. Maybe its their intention for chosing such maps as winner.

And i cant wait to get those wc3 assets =D
Jay Mohr is plenty funny when he goes off-script. It's when he's reading lame gamer jokes from a script that he's insufferable.
HAHAHHA Rrowland I just watched your bit... I was like DAMN THAT'S RROWLAND! I KNOW THAT GUY! haha nice.
Some of the questions were kind of a waste, e.g. solved by hitting search on sc2mapster.com... but some were good.
Someone's gotta post a link of Rrowland, i wanna see the Mapster shutout as i'm sure many others do ;)
rrowland pops up at 5:55.
Haha, awesome, great job Rrowland! Hope you found Sixen and managed to party your balls off somehow :D

Edit: And yeah Riley it probably would be...
And yet most questions are regarding the Battle.Net. May be they should had put at least one Bnet guy there.
Oh, Riley, what do you think about the contest overall? They didn't even announce the winners :(.
Didn't find Sixen. Didn't party my balls off with all of the CEOs and Developers at Fire & Ice Grill.
Hatred for Sixen atm.

Haha. I'm sooooo psyched for the models and heroes and level up anims etc... and possibly a new inventory UI.
@OneTwoSC: Go
Check the screenshot at the front page, a new 6 item UI in the middle top of unit info panel.

Oh I see... well to me that almost looks like they're using dialogs...
