Ahhh, I had just written up a great post and then my browser died on me...Oh well, here's a rushed rewrite of what I had.
Is there anywhere on this site where we can browse through a list of large-scale or well-made maps/mods? It would be nice to be able to just periodically check a list of all the 'titles to watch' and see how they're progressing, how close they are to release, etc; I know even poorly made titles can be addictive, fun, and 'strike gold' popularity wise...but let's face it, we mappers appreciate maps that take alot of effort and enjoy seeing when they're recognized for that effort.
Does such a list exist? We get a taste of this through the news page, but it doesn't help us keep track of all the bigger projects.
I see alot of people claiming 'there are no good custom maps' in the works. That's simply not true. We've got:
Multiple RPGs that we haven't heard much from in a while
Formation Defense 2.0:) (Shameless self promotion, but I'd say 2.0 will be one of the most polished maps out there, and I can attest to the amount of work that's gone into it)
Regardless of whether you enjoy TDs, hero arenas, RPGS, etc, all of these games will do/have done well within their genre.
The Project Workplace thread really doesn't provide what I'm talking about. There's simply too many threads on there describing bare concepts that aren't developed at all yet. There's also the occassional project thrown in there that's from a beginner. Not saying they don't deserve to show off their work (I remember how bad my first project was back in Warcraft, but it was still fun) and beginner projects take a ton of effort as well, but such projects aren't likely to be 'best in class' or things the community should watch for with bated breath.
Add more to my list, or point me towards one that already exists, please. I know I missed a bunch of big projects, but I was having trouble recalling all the names as I typed this up.
I think you misunderstood me. I'm not trying to be high and mighty or anything, but alot of projects simply never reach completion, or fall into obscurity over long periods of time, most notably the ones that take a loooooong time to make. Having a list of titles that are high quality and likely to reach completion is not a bad thing.
Right now, it's the projects that take the most work that often get little feedback.
It would really be no different than the news page...except that it would feature one map for a longer period of time.
I only jokingly put my own map up above. I was actually browsing through the project workplace section and thought it was a shame that there was no single thread for me to view that could tell me what all the most promising projects were.
Right now the top of the popularity lists on b-net are covered in low end games that were [almost] all produced during the beta of the SC2 editor. Work with the Galaxy Editor has come a LONG way...giving attention to games that make use of these relatively newly understood concepts would not be unfair.
How do you even get your videos onto the news page? I had one collection of videos put up there by somebody else's request, but very few of my videos seem to make it.
Granted, my videos are much more noobishly made than most of the ones on there...I'm a mapper/modder not a video editor ;).
If you have a map/ project/ video that you think deserve more attention (provided the video/map is about interesting things) just shoot a pm to us mod and we will get them to the news page.
To the topic, mostly map on the frontpage are good and polish maps, some project didnt get completed however, you will have to keep track of them by yourself. If any major update to them happens, it will surely grab the news again.
Thank you for including us on that list. We have our own website (http://www.eletd.com) and forums (http://forums.eletd.com) so we use those instead of a project page. I've been on hiatus the last couple of weeks but I'm returning shortly. We are sitting on a fairly stable version so a public release will come in the not too distant future.
Of course it had to be included on the list! It was far and away the best tower defense in Warcraft III. I don't doubt it will do just as well on SC2. BTW, will you be publishing to the US servers when Ele TD finally lands?

Project Workplace is for maps still in developement. Check the Map Feedback forum.
Also you may want to join us at the EU or US map nights to play custom maps made by the people at sc2mapster. Check here: http://forums.sc2mapster.com/general/general-chat/18556-eu-map-night/?page=15#p288
I doubt a "my map is better than yours" list would ever pop up around here.

I think what you are asking for is impossible to make in a good way.
But for me, its enough that we post map videos on the main page. You can really get what good maps come out from there.

You forgot to mention Sexy Gamequiz!....the video is already banned though...
As for the problem itself: I understand your point, but I really don't see, how we can make the project presentation place better.

Cool, thanks Progammer. I'm hoping to string together a more 'epic' trailer of FD 2.0 soon, so hopefully that becomes front page worthy.

Thanks :). Yes, it will be published on NA (along with EU, SEA, and LA).
