We dont want to see guides on how to unlock our own maps. Thats the problem. You can stop that by deleting this thread.
We look like a cheap hacking site posting guides on how to break maps open. Yes we all know its possible, No we dont want too many people to know about it. The "learning from it" is a cheap excuse to cover it up.
Take your time and read each person`s post in this thread. Maybe , Just maybe you`ll see our point.
So you think we should delete every thread that talks about unlocking maps in order to hide it? You must not know how the internet works. One thread on a website other than Mapster and it's over.
The only thing I see people angry about is having their map stolen, which would suck. There's nothing anyone can do about it though.
You can't stop people from pirating SC2 either, but would you allow links to torrents to be posted in the forum? If the game is hacked so people can play on battle.net without buying a copy of the game, would you news a step by step guide on how to do so?
Nope, because that's illegal. If you were selling your map, that would be a completely different story. However with that in mind, when the Premium marketplace comes out, this is something you should be worried about. If people can unlock maps then they will most certainly unlock Premium ones.

Why would anyone need to post about hacking maps on other websites when they have the biggest SC2 modding site explicitly supporting it?
And one thread on another website wouldn't necessarily mean that it becomes common knowledge. But posting it on a site like mapster (endorsing it, even) almost guarantees that literally everyone who knows how to even open the map editor will know how to do it.
At the very least, you should delete this guide just so that you can preserve the reputation of sc2mapster. :\
It's not about whether it can be unlocked or not, but about whether sc2mapsters should support it or not. Just because others reveal how to unlock maps is no excuse for this site to do it.
And besides, as a previous poster showed, sc2mapster is one of the first results when you google "unlocking sc2 map" or similar (and i cant find any other site that show how to do it). Which makes this site currently one of the top resources on how to unlock maps.

This website doesn't support anything. It's a website where mappers can talk about mapmaking. I don't have any problems with it. That doesn't mean i'm saying, "go steal maps." I never said that. I fail to see how reporting news on a neutral map making website ruins our reputation. Someone please explain that to me. SC2Mapster has always been a neutral mapmaking news/guides/db/whatever website. All of our news has been unbiased (for the most part...) reports of the current events in Mapping. Currently, OS Mapping is a big "event" that needs to be given attention. Again, tell me how doing what we have been doing for the last 6 months will ruin our reputation?
Also, post about this on the Bnet Custom Maps forums and there's no way to hide this.
It's not about whether it can be unlocked or not, but about whether sc2mapsters should support it or not. Just because others reveal how to unlock maps is no excuse for this site to do it.

This website is the top resource for SC2 Maps. Period. Regardless of what you search on "how to do <this> in SC2 maps" SC2Mapster will show up first.
Honestly I don't know where to side on this. Maybe it's something not to be deleted, but not to be newsed either. Just something that's there for those that wish to find.
How'd that help exactly? How could this stop me opening the map, modifying it and reuploading it as my own (maybe under different name). Of course, the hashsum would be different, but it would be treated as a completely different map.
A Hash code cannot be decoded, you have to brute force your way to see the map. If I remember correctly to open a 64 bit hash code with the best rainbow table software will take a few hundred dollars and 100 gb+ of space (I think I've saw a 256gb rainbow table so it can go even more). If the person has that much money and time to download the stuff then he deserves to see the opened map. Of course there are no solvings to completely close off a map, but using a hash code will get rid of all the noobs who just want to copy.
As for myself, I wholly support open source, though not stealing. Putting effort in to find a map and figuring out how to open it is one thing (and if you can achieve that then you should see the map for your efforts) but posting an already unlocked map is another (unless its by the author himself).
Nope, because that's illegal. If you were selling your map, that would be a completely different story. However with that in mind, when the Premium marketplace comes out, this is something you should be worried about. If people can unlock maps then they will most certainly unlock Premium ones.
Well, I dunno about you but when I read the EULA's 2nd section
term E: "Modify or cause to be modified any files that are part of the Game in any way not expressly authorized by Blizzard;"
term I: "Use the Map Editor (defined below) to access or edit anything other then content included in an authorized copy of the STARCRAFT II licensed to you."
Keeping in mind that section 3 basically explains that all content created with the editor (like locked maps) are owned by blizzard...
Then follow up with the description of the 'locked' setting in publishing is basically saying its to not let other people open or edit a map...
You are supporting the hacking of blizzard property. Beyond that anyone with half a brain can understand that people who put the setting to locked do no wish for the maps to be 'open source', even if you ignore the above you are also basically giving a big finger to the map makers who want their maps locked at this point. Between these two things you are causing tremendous damage to this site's reputation and frankly alienating its user base at the same time. You can't honestly say you are blind to what you are doing here, can you still? Please, you come across as much smarter then that.
ED: Now, blizzard not having a genuinely effective locking mechanism is also giving a big finger to us, but frankly exposing just how weak it is and posting a how-to on bypassing it is not something that many of us feel is a good way to handle it, in fact I think its only you and the sockpuppet who posted it who in support of trying to force blizzard's hand in this manner.
Again, please show me where I said, "SC2Mapster supports stealing maps."

You did not say that, but i think it is the wish of map makers that sc2mapster would not tolarate unlocking (or stealing) maps or supplying tutorials on how it could be done.
Maybe not doing anything can be considered keeping a neutral policy towards map unlocking, but it does in fact help people to unlock maps by allowing it on this site.
As you said, this is the top resource for sc2 maps. Which is the reason that having a tutorial on this site does have an impact. If this thread is the first thing that pops up in google, that this thread no doubt helps people who want to unlock maps.
I think some of you guys have overlooked the fact that Sixen has been in contact with the author. Thus, there is nothing wrong with the unprotected mapfile. The attached SotIS mapfile should not have been deleted.
The real problem lies with the instructions on how to crack a map. They should be edited out. They do more harm than good, does anyone really contest that?
Sixen made the point of this site being a neutral place that presents modding news. There is some fallacy in this argument though. Some of you may have heard about that lunatic pastor who wanted to burn Korans. Needless to say, it was the talk everywhere. But, there was a pact amongst cable stations to not cover the event had it proceeded. What is my point here? Just because it is news and you are neutral doesn't mean you have to report it. Sometimes the consequence of the news is simply not worth it being covered.
Even if this information spreads all over the internet and becomes impossible to squelch, do we really want this to be one place that you can find it? This is bad for reputation. There is no good that can come out of having this here.

Obviously I know the impact map unlocking will have on the community. There are pros as well as cons, but it seems like everyone posting here is refusing to accept the pros, and you cannot have a debate with people that have closed minds.
As far as reverse-engineering map files goes, that's real iffy. I haven't seen anyone complaining about our Wiki or the creation of any third party mapping tools, which in order to be created required reversing how the maps worked. That would make this a double standard, unless you're telling me you think the creation of third party mapping apps are bad for the community as well? Andromeda, MilkyWayEdit, etc are all illegal by your standards. The same goes for any/all War3/SC1/War2 mapping tools. As far as SC1 goes, the only way to make a map was by using third party tools, nobody actually used StarEdit. Blizzard doesn't have any issues with this, they want their Mapping community to thrive. It's only a matter of time before someone actually makes an Unprotector program, just as they did in the SC1 days.
I'm not giving anyone the finger. If you want your map protected, you better find a way to protect it. I am not saying, "im gunna st33l ur mapz bra", i'm saying "Someone may steal your map." On the other hand, i'm also saying that OS Mapping is good for the community as a learning tool. I am not saying everyone will steal maps. I am not saying anyone will steal maps. If you steal a map, it won't do you any good.
Even if this information spreads all over the internet and becomes impossible to squelch, do we really want this to be one place that you can find it? This is bad for reputation. There is no good that can come out of having this here.
Sixen, you are on the losing side :(.
Do we really want to be the place that you can find anything and everything about SC2Mapping? What kind of question is that? Of course we want to be the #1 resource for SC2Mapping. Publicity is publicity really, especially since SC2Mapster is neutral.
There is no losing side because there are no sides, and I don't know how many times I can say this. Maps can be unprotected. It's a fact. It's not something we're arguing. It is what it is.
It's a hell of alot better than just laying flat on the ground, and praying that map unprotection suddenly just stops. Hear no evil, see no evil, and do no evil.
Please try to keep an open-mind about things, as opposed to not. You started with the conclusion that my arguement is pointless before even going into anything.....
And I have been in communities in the past also. BEFORE warcraft 3. Not everyone here is completely new to the internet.
Simply put, map unprotection happens, it's up to us, the people who don't want this to happen, to do something about it. The only way we can do anything about it, is to spread the two messages:
Someone please fix it.
Maps are not safe right now, so only post maps if you want people to open them.
Btw, SC2 is a new game with ALOT of future plans. If the communities dies, multiplayer will be pointless, people will simply just play the campaign which does not have to be bought "hyuk hyuk". Blizzard HAS to do something about the problems or else they risk losing profit.
Also, what actually ends up happening is a variety of map protectors come out, each that protects in a certain way. Map crackers will have to litterally open up the maps in hex-edit and check which protector was used. The more protectors out there, the more difficult it will be to unprotect maps.
People who are suggesting that it is possible to completely lay flat and ignore the problem have not taken into account the hacking/malicious forums that will arise, youtube, google, etc. etc....
It's pretty clear that Sixen feels that mapmakers should have no choice in how other people use their work, is entirely unsympathetic to the inevitability of people getting their maps stolen and lives in a fantasy where he has no responsibility for the content posted on his own website. Fair enough. It's been swell.

It's pretty clear that you are having trouble comprehending my posts. I have made it very clear that the fact of the matter is that mapmakers have no choice in how other people use their work. Not once have I said that I believed people should not have that choice. Please do not put words in my mouth. Thanks.
Before I read this post I didn't exactly know how the maps could be unlocked ... to an extend.
I'm glad that I do now, because this will help me prevent it by obfuscating the map as much as possible.
I'm a web developer and in order to prevent your product to get hacked, you yourself need to know how to actually hack it. That goes for all kind of programming, even map development.
I'm just saying...
Edit: Oh and I haven't posted here since the SC2 beta, but for once I do because I think you guys are overreacting sooo much.... no really, you are!

Indeed, there was a false sense of security, a consensus, travelling around, entering the mind of the general people, spreading rapidly; plague-like it was.
Hopefully, the revelation as to the true nature of the situation will lead to people taking larger precautions, like my quoted friend will do, to prevent hacking.
It also enthuses the map optimization creators, pushing them to create their tools which will make our maps low-file size and create faster loading times.
Think towards the future. It takes two to tango. Lack of innovation destroys a community.
Sixen, please, let's cut the "open source" crap shall we.
(Reply on page 1)
This is nothing like opening the source code of a software to learn from it. You have a lot of tutorials to learn from, there's plenty of unlocked maps to download and look at if you browse SC2Mapster, and people keep releasing libraries ready to plug and use easily.
Maps are not protected, we all know that since Beta and Blizzard doesn't care at the moment just like they don't seem to care about custom maps at all. Let's be honest here for a second, who do you think we are really afraid of? The experienced user who already knew how to reconstruct maps and look at THAT specific data editor trick he wanted to copy in his own project, or the 10.000 retards who will now Google this and boost their own unbalanced/cheated version of *Random popular map here* after the next popularity reset?
"Nicely done"? "This is newsworthy"?. I'm sorry, but you are SO not a mapmaker :|
Please find me anyone who spent 300+ hours creating a map and remotely agrees with this.
This tutorial will probably come out soon on other websites, that's unfortunately true. So if we want to do something to force Blizzard to protect maps for real, let's spam the official forums to the point we quickly get an answer. That's something. I fail to see how showcasing a thread like this on SC2Mapster (the #1 resource online) can be positive at all for the mapmaking community, its only effect will be to disencourage authors from releasing their work because every kid out there will know how to modify and upload his favourite map, your call if a few additional clicks on the website can justify that.
