Yeah, Technically there is no debate actually. Sixen`s word seems to be law. This thread is dumb and should be deleted. Sixen having this here is just doing terrible terrible damage to the site`s reputation.
Ive lost my interest. Helping noobs to the point of virtually DOING our own maps(which takes a very long time), and letting them have their way with it, just sucks. We should create a sub forum. With all the cool maps hacked and opened hmm?. Lets make it one step easier for them?. Why not?
Mile25 is working on a cool Rpg. You think he wants people to know how to open his map?. Im pretty sure not. That includes the rest of us.
If author wants his map to be public he wouldn't lock it. You should feel bad for trying to unlock and read it, even for "learning purposes". If you open his map and look up stuff without his permission your as good as stealing his map ideas/designs.
Honestly, it's the intent behind this thread that makes all the difference. I really don't believe that the actual purpose of this thread is to screw map makers over. Even though blizzard knows about their mistakes, they aren't going to change anything unless people start making waves. My first conclusion is to promote this exploit as much as possible until Blizzard gets off their jolly asses and does something right. There's always going to be those assholes who actually do open the maps to put in cheats. They won't stop just because they are suppose to feel bad about it.
As far as it goes, all maps that have been released already are screwed already. There's nothing stopping anyone from finding the maps and cracking them. Deleting this single thread will not impeded the process of opening a locked map in any noticable way.
AGAIN DELETING THIS THREAD WILL DO NOTHING!!!!! The existance of this thread is alerting the good people who do not google "SC2 crack map". The existance of this thread is to start waves inside the good mapping community. Deleting this thread just means that bad people will continue to bad things without being noticed on a large scale, hence nothing!!
People will google and find the steps somewhere else in less than a minute. The only way around this is for someone to find an actual lock to the maps. It could be blizzard, it might not be blizzard. My second conclusion is for people to refuse to release any new maps until someone fixes the problem. We should NOT be posting the actual unlocked maps here though. However, if some authors are willing to have their maps unlocked and somehow start a campaign against blizzard major screw up.......
I came from a valve community before this, and how anything was done, was by whining in their forums. Enough whining = change, no matter what lol.
I think it's in really bad taste to have a tutorial on how to unlock maps on this forum.
A lock is still a lock even if it can be picked, and you should not open it. In the same way that a unlocked house does not mean you have the right to walk in and have a look at the furniture.
Also, most people that does not make maps dont have any idea of how to open locked maps or that it is even possible, and for these people it is far more likely that they will stumble on a tutorial on how to unlock maps rather than that they will out of the blue get the idea that modifying maps might be possible and type in "sc2 map unlocker" in google. Im sure there are thousands of people out there who has got their own ideas on how to "improve" nexus wars.

Your post is full of epic fail
/Facepalm
Nothing was done for Wc3. Same situation will follow suite,
Promoting it wont be of any good. Blizzard already knows the situation. Also, All our crying wont make a difference to them. They are a good company, but really, they do what they want when they want.
You must also understand that full protection locking will never be possible.
Well, good job severely damaging this website's reputation.
By the way, the only reason you would be able to find out how to hack maps if someone posted a step by step guide on it. Which they did, and which the administration of this forum have not only failed to delete but also directly endorsed.
Look at that. This thread, and SC2mapster are now the premier sites for people to learn about how to open maps which people don't want to be opened. Have you guys even considered the implications this has (not just for your sites reputation, but for the entire mapping community as a whole)? You can't even encrypt banks files anymore, no matter how strong your encryption algorithm is, because anyone can just open your map using this tutorial and generate whatever code they want to.
There's a huge difference between promoting open source and basically teaching people how to steal maps.
You know what's really funny is if you try to post a map project here there are tons of warnings on how you can only post it if you're the map's creator or you have their express permission.
But apparently posting an unlocked map on the forums is OK and even encouraged by some of the mods, and will only be taken down if the map's original author somehow finds out about it and then asks that it's taken down.
I'm losing interest in sticking around here. Clearly the site runners are more interested in the extra traffic that'll be gathered by posting controversial things like cracking guides and unlocked versions of popular maps than creating a resource that's friendly to map authors.

1. Only Sixen supports this. The other mods do not.(Well most of them I think)
2. You are definitely an asset to Mapster. We would not want to lose you.
3. This pisses me off just as much as you or anyone else here.
I actually gave Sixen an ultimatum about it backstage. There is a discussion going on there.
Basically, if he deletes it, then everything goes back to being cool
If he does not. I resign as mod, and yeah I dont know what the others will do, but we`ll see. Personally I cant stand this.
So if by tomorrow or the next day, you see my mod status removed or my name color gone back to green. Then you know I got demoted. Sixen did not change his mind, and I become a martyr;p.
So just give it some time and we`ll see what happens.
Instead of saving locked maps on the users PC, maybe blizzard could implement a 'Streaming' thing. Basically, you play, a temp copy is download to a folder. Then when the match is over, the map is deleted from that place. This folder could be somewhere like an appdata folder, or a place where you generally can't access. Plus if SC2 is using the map, I don't think you can copy + paste the file.
Would require redownloading on each play, but i'd say it's worth it to keep the map safe.
I'm... a bit shocked that Sixen is supporting this. Really, this isn't SC1 anymore, we're in the days of locking and protecting maps from thieves. Map theft is not cool. You should ALWAYS ask the creator for permission to use something from his/her map, or even to look at it in depth, and then give credit to them when making your own. It's the same thing with copyrights. If you want to be able to use copyrigthed material, ask the creator for permission first. Get written permission and you can use it. Locking maps, in a way, is copyrighting your map (except Blizzard still owns it, but you know what I mean), it means people should ask you first before using it or anything in it.
Really, while I agree this is not about open-source vs. closed-source, it's not right to just post someone's unlocked map without their permission. That is theft.
I am very confused. I'm not exactly sure why so many people are getting mad? This has nothing to do with me. This has nothing to do with SC2Mapster. This has nothing to do with the moderators. This has nothing to do with map authors. This has nothing to do with SotiS. This has nothing to do with ekcol. There is no "law." Regardless of what anyone thinks, maps are open source. Debating this topic won't put an end to that. The fact of the matter is, your map can be opened if it is locked. I suppose there really isn't even really a reason to have this debate? Maps can be unlocked. It is what it is.
What is everyone fighting over? Clearly it isn't what I am arguing about.
I'm not angry. I was just surprised. I think *why* people are getting so mad is because most people here (if not all) are making maps, and they don't want someone like the Original Poster to suddenly post a thread with their map, unlocked and open for others to tinker with. I think that's why they're angry, that is, if anyone is really angry in this thread. :P

So the problem is that people can unlock maps, which means their problem is with Blizzard. There's not much I can do about that. I can't stop people from unlocking maps and I certainly can't hide it.

Won't work. You can still get at it. The bottom line is that if the map is anywhere on the user's computer, in RAM, or transmitted over the network, it will be accessible some way or another. In order to play the map, the user's SC2 program needs to be able to access it, and if SC2 can access it then so can the user. The only thing blizzard can do is make it require more effort/reverse engineering to bypass the locking system.
So the problem is that people can unlock maps, which means their problem is with Blizzard. There's not much I can do about that. I can't stop people from unlocking maps.
We dont want to see guides on how to unlock our own maps. Thats the problem. You can stop that by deleting this thread.
We look like a cheap hacking site posting guides on how to break maps open. Yes we all know its possible, No we dont want too many people to know about it. The "learning from it" is a cheap excuse to cover it up.
Take your time and read each person`s post in this thread. Maybe , Just maybe you`ll see our point.

You can't stop people from pirating SC2 either, but would you allow links to torrents to be posted in the forum? If the game is hacked so people can play on battle.net without buying a copy of the game, would you news a step by step guide on how to do so?

Hmm, that is probably right. And now when I check again, you can alter Blizzard maps. Hmm... Just forget what I said.
Couldn't agree more.
+2
"People will learn from this"...
next week
200 Sotis remakes appear on bnet.
and cmon...if its locked it means the creator doesnt want you to look or modify the map!

Well if you decide to spam the forums about this, make sure to post in General Discussions.
I don't think they even read the Custom Maps one.

I mean, http://lmgtfy.com/?q=opening+locked+sc2+maps (also note how it is LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE to find any other site that has such a tutorial).

I was surprised to see that the unlocked Sotis map was still attached to the OP up until now. I thought it was removed already ...
Anyway, now it is.
I won't leave another person's map publicly presented like that.
