Very interesting thread you got going here DarcZaFire, this post is likely way too late but making it anyways. I have to agree with Dogmai's way of thinking about things, some people do get rather wrapped up in their own work, then respond to some questions when they are too pissed off at their own issues to look at their own map. Just take the replies for the information you can get from them, sheesh. I would much rather get a very informed answer where every third sentence ends in "ya #%#%ing noob" that helps me to resolve my question than a kind response that doesn't really tell me much of anything, but if I'm asking a question on a forum, I should be expecting a crap shoot.
Now about testers, you gotta love all of them. Back when I was in my SC/BW map making mode, and it was a hell of a lot easier to get testers on the fly, some peeps would immediately wig out and leave since they hated the starting unit or some lame crap like that. But some would stick around and try it, and would get valuable responses from them. One guy, I think he was calling himself Kroell at the time was helping me test Elements 6 out one day, and he informs me my map is boring. He was just like yea, has units and stuff, but kind of boring. And he was pretty much right, I at the time had focused so much on balancing my 6 elements, tweaking their strengths/weaknesses, that I had gone and forgot to add any plot to my map. Lol! That earned him a spot in the opening credits for sharing opinions in his own special way, and I ended up adding several quests to give players something to actively work on while playing. So please don't hate on testers just because they hate on your map, they are dissing the map not you.
I'm currently only a week into attempting to learn how to work this Galaxy Editor or whatever you call it, but have every intention of figuring enough out to put a quality map out there. From what I can see peeps here are pretty helpful, understanding that they have lives and maps of their own to mess with. I am simply glad to know there is somewhere I can go to when I hit a brick wall.
lol you definitely do need to draw a line sometimes. I've recognized some ppl new to the editor trying to take advantage, like not trying on their own and what not.. Just asking me for everything without having tried themselves at all... very frustrating when someone asks something like, "how do I make my character/unit move faster?"... some things are obvious that they did not try themselves.
The members of the bnet community vary in so many ways. the best of the best are here that's what I think. Just had corbo log into live stream video to show me how to import a model I downloaded from mapster.. He tried for almost an hour trying to talk me through it and eventually did the big favor of going live. No matter what people told me they never included that I had to set up an import path.. \assets\textures\ for testures and nothing for models.
Yea this community is nice, for the most part lol... you do get a few spoiled apples, but then you get those who turn them into applesauce and they are banned :D
You misunderstand that when I say the word "noob"; I am not by any means refering to new map makers, I am refering to the people who come here and expect everything to be done for them - the ones who can't spend more than 5 seconds looking for something in the editor, the ones who want people to make their map for them so that they can put their name on a project ... that ones who show you all a lot more disrespect by the way they act rather than by me calling them noobs.
New Map Makers are no problem ... and you never ever see me talk down to them ... but noobs on the other hand ... -_-
it is less polite to say that you need help asking for someone elses time, if you really do not know if you need help if u never did try. I get frustrated a lot with some ppl who try to join Genesis almost demanding an answer to a problem they never put effort into.
But,.. what I don't undertand is the harshness you displayed. you must have been pretty upset because it seemed to me like you put little effort into trying to refrain from insulting everyone. You put down the site and their moderating, and you practically shot down the noobs who did read your post... there was no distinction of new map makers and noobs "who have these ideas that will never see the light of day."
If I read that when I first came here I would assume that this site was full of attitudes like that.. not very welcoming.
I wasn't upset or angry ... different cultures mate. You have to read across multiple threads and not one single thread, otherwise people bitch if I repeat myself. Pick the people I should please ... everyone is different; for certain mods I could not care less, and others I get along really well with ... at the end of the day this website is not everything, nor important to me whatsoever, I am a great asset to the community, no doubt when my typing is kept in check, but regardless what certain people may say (or what certain mods may threaten), I will always be available to whoever needs help, all they have to do is ask ... my loyality lies with Sixen and other "higher up" mates I have, not this website ... I have a shitload of knowledge, and as I said many times before, if I had already released all my tutorials/information that is stored in my head - no one would talk shit ... but until then such is life.
I am not harsh persay, more blunt. I simply do not fuck around either online or off, and for some people who are not use to it, it can be extremely confronting, but seeing I get along with nearly everyone I meet in real life, then there is very little problem. The bluntness comes out more in regards to working or when someone is doing something wrong, as I show my respect by not lieing to you, and stopping you from making a fool of yourself (or at least trying), where other people will keep being ignorant (such as letting their kids run around on the street and then blaming everyone else when their kids get hit by cars) this is just stupid ... if you really care about someone you will not allow them to put themselves into bad situations.
Its the same for mapping here ... I see a lot of people with a great motivation but simply a lack of ability ... if they want to learn then I along with others who have the knowledge will teach, but the majority simply come here expecting us to make their maps for them ... I am not the only one who has been put in this situation. And, if you have noticed that my "annoyance" with people have increased the closer Tofu is to being finished and the longer I have played Minecraft ... the first is simple - I have worked my ass off for a year and a half on a project I am pushing myself so hard to get finished, it is physically making me sick because I am getting so tired and rundown but still have to push myself so hard to finish it. The second is also simple ... for the better part of a year I have been a babysitter for parents who let their kids run riot on Minecraft ... you add that to the years of constant abuse I have suffered at the hands of Bnet kiddies (especially when I was playing Dota from Australia) and you will understand why I simply have very little time for the majority of people.
If you came to a website and based your view of the whole site and hundreds of members from a single post then I have nothing to say ... -_-
Imo this topic is pretty much cycling around itself right now, but I will still post my opinion here.
I am kind of in between the worlds at the moment. I have started with the Galaxy Editor some months ago and I still feel like a noob, but I think I can wrap my head around most of the basic data stuff and if you tell me to do a unit in the data editor with the custom abilities X, Y and Z I could find a way to do it for many/most ability concepts and visuals (if you would take for example abilities like we know them from various MOBA games).
On other parts of the editor (mainly UI, Cinematics) or simply knowing what types of Events/Actions exist in the trigger editor, or knowing what types of doodads exist and how they look, I'm simply bad. So I will ask basic questions here (for example the difference between Functions and Action Definitions, I didn't know that ADs can't return a value. It is completely logical, but everyone knows these kinds of mental blackouts) that might seem stupid, just because it will save me a ton of time. The general purpose of questions is to get information. Whether someone else is willing to spend his time and give me the information or not is a completely different thing and therefore no one should blame people just because they don't want to share information. Sure it would be nice if everyone did, but especially in the 21. century things like copyright and the material value of ideas get more important every day. So there are multiple points of view on this topic and I don't want to say my opinion is the only right one. If you scroll through the battle.net maps you will get a good idea of how many people lock their maps and don't want to share anything. I haven't tried the top 20 most played maps, but I bet most of them will be locked (probably all of them except the Blizzard ones). Do I like it? Probably more than not sharing information, because it is actual work that was done and not just knowledge. But I still think every map that has not like a bazillion custom models and 10000 hours of work in it would be reasonable to share. In the end everyone who uses the editor is happy if there are more mappers and artists who get inspired by seeing and being able to analyze other peoples work.
On the other hand there will always be cheaters and douchebags who exploit it on all levels, last year the Minister of Defense of my country (Germany) had to resign because he copied most of his dissertation. So I don't want to pretend everyone does what is best for the community or is really willing to learn. But I personally prefer to think like that about other people, because it just makes me a much more relaxed human being. :)
To get back to the topic, of course all of that is no reason to make the one that asked the question angry, if someone is like "go figure it out yourself" or "that's easy haha nap" moderators should just intervene and delete it, because it doesn't help anyone. If I go to a math forum to get help it would be horrible if people react like this. At the end of the day we all just want to get better at the editor or get things done there, so either help (in whatever rude way you like, as long as your help contains information. But I wonder how you can provide help in a rude way? Can't really imagine that.) or don't help and keep your mouth shut, which is a perfectly reasonable and understandable thing to do. :)
There are no stupid questions, there are only stupid answers. Especially concerning something as intransparent as the Galaxy Editor.
lol if this thread is cycling around itself then I guess it's a good thing that its not off topic. Theres only so far that this thread can go lol but it is stil going. besides, I've learned a lot from this thread alone about myself, other people, and this website..and that's important.
Well said... what an eyefull lol. A key point of this thread is in the deliverance. no, we cant get mad that eople dont share their knowledge but it is fair to feel disrespected if someone brushes you off, just because they know the answer and know you want it lol... cold stuff. Those are the people that I honestly have not scene.. personally, I may have invited someof them to my team haha because of their talent.. they are rarely willing to help its like you gotta catch them high or in a good mood somehow.. shower them with compliments?? to get them to do a solid for you. being like that is stupid... so you do stupid things with those stupid acting people to get what matters to you from them.
I have a shitload of knowledge, and as I said many times before, if I had already released all my tutorials/information that is stored in my head - no one would talk shit ... but until then such is life.
Its the same for mapping here ... I see a lot of people with a great motivation but simply a lack of ability ... if they want to learn then I along with others who have the knowledge will teach, but the majority simply come here expecting us to make their maps for them
Simply because someone could have more to offer in terms of tutorials, doesn't mean they should be held to different standards. Whether a noob comes on here ranting, or a moderator does; it should not be allowed. It is a community site, and if your opinion is not for the better of the community, it is the responsibility of the mods to remove your post and punish you; even if they might agree with what you say.
Also, glad everyone can agree that there are too many people who want everyone else to make a map for them. Angry rants about it wont help. The easiest thing to do would be to promote a few special mods to overlook the "project workplace" thread, and have to "allow" any new topic made.
Weeding out the paragraph long "I'm gonna make a game like dota, but it will be DBZ and gogita is gonna pewpew a lot, and flying zealots. I need help making flyuing zealots, and creating characters, and skills, i know what i want, but cant do it, and i need a terrainer, even though i spent almost a whole hour making the terrain, someone could touch it up for me. And triggers, I dont know what they are. When i press "test map" it ends suddenly."
It would be a mild fix. Would allow for better orginization. Higher quality projects would take priority. It is silly to think that dozens of hours should be spend helping someone making a flying zealot, as you explain every step of the process to him, when that time could be spent investing thoughts/opinions into better projects.
And to add to the discussion of people who make worthless posts as answers:
I have a thread asking if there are any "hero arena" type maps, that I can look at, to see the competition. In 7-8 places I say "NOT AOS/DOTA/SOTIS style maps" Sure, a bunch of people suggested just that. Me and dogmai were discussing it, other people occasionally poped in to say that there really aren't any. So, I posted a conclusion that there aren't any classic "hero arena" style games. A guy posts "There's tons, dont know what you're talking about." and leaves it at that. At least people who suggested DOTA style maps were trying. This guy was the opposite of helpful. Saying nothing would have been more helpful.
On the other hand, we have the "overly helpful +1 posters. Someone asks a question, someone posts a good answer, that fills the question completely. Someone else, posts almost the same exact answer, again. And it isn't like 2 minutes later, and maybe they were typing it up at the same time. Like 3 hours later, you will see the same exact answer from someone else. Yay, +1, so helpful.
We understand that you work hard and have a plethora of knowledge, yet evidently knowledge of how to communicate with others in a relatively friendly or at least respectful manner has eluded you.
Being skilled and abused still aren't excuses for abusing others. If you being abused made you so unhappy, you should at least then understand that abusing others makes you a massive hypocrite.
You misunderstand that when I say the word "noob"; I am not by any means referring to new map makers, I am referring to the people who come here and expect everything to be done for them - the ones who can't spend more than 5 seconds looking for something in the editor, the ones who want people to make their map for them so that they can put their name on a project ... that ones who show you all a lot more disrespect by the way they act rather than by me calling them noobs.
New Map Makers are no problem ... and you never ever see me talk down to them ... but noobs on the other hand ... -_-
I propose a new term for what you are describing Dogmai, a M.O.O.C.H.. Moron Online Obviously for Credit not rightly His. I agree that there are a number of those out there just from my short time on this site. If I can figure out their question with my whole week and a half Galaxy Editor experience, why couldn't they? Of course some answers are just staring right at you and you can't see them for whatever reason.
lol you can join.. If anything im asking more questions myself. The team is for a group of collectively knowledgable ppl to be willing to help less knowledgable ppl.. ultiamtely we gain from all aspects. A person who just started on a map does have a chance at accomplishing something I have never done.
So far.. ppl who have been accepted are not like that lol there is a mini filter system I have, which is proof of effort.. Show me your map and i decide if i let you in.
and I appreciate everyones posts denying the earlier claims that this thread had run its' course lol.. that it is just a troll thread.
Should you help someone if they don't seem capable of understanding the complexity of the editor, or a task in the editor? When do you call it quits?
Usually I just try to give them a very vague answer to confuse them further at that point, and either they will do 1 of 2 things, 1. They will Quit, which means they werent dedicated enough to learn anyways, or 2. they will keep trying until they get it working or a work around. anyone can learn anything to an unlimited extent with a bit of dedication and hard work :). the difference between teh guy with 70 IQ and the guy with 170 IQ is the guy with room temp IQ will have to work harder.

Show me your map and i decide if i let you in.
and I appreciate everyones posts denying the earlier claims that this thread had run its' course lol.. that it is just a troll thread.

lol let me pose a question here.
