He [Frank Pearce] adds that Blizzard missed an opportunity to help grow the hub last year by releasing “Starcraft II” without a marketplace component, which would have allowed users to share self-made add-ons and modifications. It’s something he would still like to add, but with the teams tied up working on new titles, it’s not going to happen soon, he concedes.
“One of the things about gamers is they’re really passionate and they consume content so quickly,” he says. “[World of Warcraft] Cataclysm took us two years to make - and many of them burned through that in two weeks...You can leverage the community to create awesome content for others to consume. All of a sudden there’s the possibility to have all of this that awesome content available... I regret not launching ‘Starcraft II’ with a marketplace.”

thanks blizzard. everytime you post something im filled with rage.
just to be clear. if they really wanted to help the growth of the custom map community they'd stop screwing us over with a shitty system
Lack of time and people perhaps. I hope they can really handle all of the games... WoW is the beast of them, and of course Titan coming up. SC2 and D3 are probably smaller in terms of work-time. Who knows though.
Ultimately I think some form of marketplace will come. Which I guess is good considering we have the jump on it ;)
I have an editor that works and I can make w/e I want
Im happy...
Rest of you learn to see the joy in what we have, and be happy when the rest comes (which it will) =D
I dislike post that act like blizzard doesn't know whats going on... and act as if they WANT their system to suck.... good things are coming this im positive of and KNOW. just site back and watch. and be happy!
Depressing read for sure. It's scary to see even blizzard fears the worst with everyone expecting everything for free and the quality of the gaming landscape quickly deteriorating.
We need a new business model. I think a lot can be learned from minecraft though, free release/ demo. Easy to access and progressively more expensive prices as the game becomes better.
Nothing to be optimistic about really. Just sharing some story. But making maps, especially ambitious one, is verrryyy fun, oh especially doing it with friends too. Make sure you don't spend all your life betting on it. 1-2 hours a day before bed is pretty healthy imo.
What we have right now is great! Sure there are things that could make it amazing, and I am sure we will see those down the line.
Blizzard is on it. Remember, as always, their slogan is "It'll be done when it's done."
Plus, if Blizzard follows their philosophy with taking in idea as they do with WoW. We will see some good things inspired by the community in time. Honestly, it there anything really bad about the game right now or anything extremely lacking? (aside from possibly the popularity system)
The marketplace would have been nice... yeah lots of people get filled with rage over the idea of buying maps, but face it, if any of us were getting a salary to make excellent maps, a lot of us would get on it and pour more time into it. Higher quality maps and mods, too me, is a plus, even if I have to pay a dollar or two for them. Getting payed to make my own maps.... even cooler.
Molsterr is right, good things are coming. For one, the new custom games browser is going to change things and help us get more exposure to our maps. I'm happy with what we have now, and realizing it's just going to get better makes me think more highly of Blizzard. Now we just have to hope Bobby Kotick gets out of the picture (nuclear strike on his house? hmm, goofy map idea lol). I do wonder though, if it weren't for Activision, would we still be waiting for StarCraft II?

Trouble is, will that be too late? My worry is not that it won't happen, just that it will happen when nobody cares about it and lots of people have given up map making.

because people that stopped are locked out of the editor once it happens? People that are maken maps for the soul reason of being #1..and not because they love doing it dont really matter if they leave and never come back, its the ones that truly love what they are doing.. they will stay (or will come back when the time is right) and they are the ones that matter.
Things are going to happen soon + two more expansions ... it wont be to late

Also, not a big fan of blind optimism.

Don't worry maverck, blizzard hasn't and wont.
Yep.. blizzard hasn't seen a single post out there...and dosnt care one thing about the community, time to give up everyone! -cough-
Things are coming people.. good things.. time to stop hating... and realize blizzard wants to make people happy
i wasn't being sarcastic. i seriously meant dont take any notice of me. im an asshole. i know.
pff an asshole wouldn't come out and say that tho =D
only when they hate being one and realise it.
I concur with Molsterr.
