Hello Galexy Community
i wanted to know why the starcraft modmaps are not that popular as the wc3ones was
what do you think? I mean i just think nah Galaxyeditor cants mess with the world editor lol i was very very wrong xD long time i did think that cause at the start of starcraft 2 there was no costum model nobody shows some work now i understand its because it takes long time to manage all the things in the editor
So i dont understand why its not overhyped as it was with wc3 maps so is it the map limit on 10mb or is it because of its complexity?I mean look at the hivelworkshop peoples still work with the old editor
But the starcraft editor allows you just todo all what you want
I wonder nobody created a Sc2Animemap... do you remember Narutowars ,battlestadium don or footmanfrenzy(just example) ?
forthermore i want do thanks all people shareing there Systems and knowledges here! its just such a greatfullhelp
The publish space limit is around 154mb (or was it 157?). So, that is definitely not a problem. The size limit for a map is 20mb as far as I know, but you can put everything that eats up a lot of space into a mod file and add a dependency to it into your map.
The file limit of 20 might be a problem after a few years. It depends what you are working on.
So, here are my thoughts:
- SC2's editor is more complex, at least the data module
- SC2's battle.net only consisted out of a popularity list for a long time after release
- old editor guys might not want to re-learn editing aspects for SC2 like learning the data aspect
- SC2's data editor is more time consuming to use
- you do not own the files you publish, content might be more strict than on WC3 where Blizzard had no control about the maps
- marketplace was mentioned, but never created
- getting players to test new maps is more difficult as you can't advertise your lobby
- maps can be rated and commented which might create a fear of bad ratings for new/unfinished maps
I wonder nobody created a Sc2Animemap... do you remember Narutowars ,battlestadium don or footmanfrenzy(just example) ?
This assumption is wrong. There are actually anime maps, for example, theres a Naruto map. Theres also a pretty cool Star Wars map (not anime, I know).
Oh Crainy sry I just dont see such a map yet iam still a noob!
Maybe you can post me a link? would be very nice
Its just it was so funny all this diffent kinds of maps in wc3
but i think i understand now it takes very long time to create a good balenced funny map
I think it's because b-net 2.0 was a step down from sc1/wc3 as far as social aspect is concerned. Many players described feelings of loneliness and isolation accompanying their stay in it. Designed for competition and efficiency in all things, player interaction was reduced to bare minimum. It's a platform in which you don't enjoy your stay. The horribly designed initial cutthroat popularity list didn't help the issue, never-mind that someone thought it would be a good idea to prohibit mass player communication in the release version. Now that I think of it, b-net 2.0 was a despot drunk on its sovereignty over RTS/MOD domain, enforcing its sense of right and wrong on frustrated playerbase.
So in sort, b-net was the one thing that shattered dreams and expectations of new golden mapmaking age for many modders, thus the mundanity of current days. Also, Blizz liked to swing the ban-hammer in direction of maps, making people afraid of copyright infringement ban (no easy anime maps). And we all know how well censorship affects creativity >.>
I'm in the works of something close enough, but chances are it's not going to last very long on B.Net without them deleting it.
Sorry but 60%+ of B.Net previously was almost entirely themed maps like Anime or Star Wars or Pokemon or WHATEVER, and that is the kind of thing people liked making/playing. By banning those maps because of copyright infringement, they effectively reduced their map base by at least 60%. I know at least 5 veteran map makers from WC3 that were the leading map devs for those themed maps you talk about, and they all moved to SC2 for a short period of time, 2 got their maps deleted, and the rest realized what happened and stopped their projects. Those guys could have again had some fantastic themed maps, but greed prevails
Edit: I know 60% is probably an excessive number, it was probably much less than that, but the top played maps on B.Net in the WC3 era were mostly themed maps beyond DotA (Naruto 3rd Shinobi Wars and such). I suppose I'm just a little bitter about it, anime maps aren't exactly the most professional looking things but they're fun to make at the very least, and alot of good map makers left solely because of that.
this is a very interesting topic to me.
during the time when starcraft 2 was released I really tried to get myself into the new editor with all the cool functionality and features.
however, in the first time it was just frustrating to work with it.
nearly all "cool" features such as banks, release system, map marketplace etc. weren't working at all.
the data editor was just not what I as a experienced warcraft III actually wanted - I wanted to code things and I really didn't want to sticks objects together just like in the more or less hated object editor of warcraft III.
I just wanted a cool language with a nice syntax which was powerful enough to handle everything I could imagine to create games.
however, this was also pure frustration - as in the warcraft III editor the essential scriting language "galaxy" was/is only poorly supported - blizzard just made a very basic syntax highlighting and that's it. they suggested to use GUI which was better than the wc3 GUI but not the thing I wanted - in the scripting language itself many "features" were still missing when I tried to create maps such as nice dialog functionality and stable timer functionalities.
the memory cap was basically a bad joke - even in wc3 I was able to keep more memory around for the gameplay purposes ...
Another really bad thing is the dependency of battle.net as modder for starcraft 2 maps.
in warcraft III you were much more independent and could easily publish your maps in several different plattforms which is one reason why warcraft III is still alive btw ... (garena, eurobattle.net etc.)
Besides that most people prefer to create maps and stories for medieval themes just like warcraft and not for galactical interventions such as starcraft 2.
The aspect of creating models before one could actually start a cool medival map is just horrible ...
The model section is also not as great as it was in warcraft III because models now take much longer to develop and it isn't that easy anymore to pump out some proper models for games.
All in all I can just say that the first time (first few months or perhaps even longer!) was too frustation to actually continue working with the editor for starcraft 2. I by myself looked for alternatives and found the unity project which was much cooler in my opinion.
I think there's a very simple reason to answer the title's question: back when the WC3 World Editor was announced, it was literally completely revolutionary. Up until then, the only mapmakers that had been around for RTS games in general had simply been way shittier, way more complex and had some serious restrictions in them. The World Editor pretty much allowed anybody to make a good map, tossed in a visual representation of coding with its trigger system and later, with the data editor, allowed people to create their own units, buildings, spells and what-not with extreme ease.
The Galaxy Editor was simply never as revolutionary - it merely improved upon the data and triggering systems the World Editor had already come up with. Sure, there were some pretty revolutionary promises like FPS games within SC2, but pretty much everything that was really new there fell flat on its face due to unsolvable bugs (ASWD lag + performance issues) or a lack of support by Blizzard (we still have to get creative to make custom campaigns playable).
I'm in the works of something close enough, but chances are it's not going to last very long on B.Net without them deleting it.
Heres a revelation for you all: Blizzard does not randomely delete maps off the Battle.Net. Never has, never will. Im not even sure where this train of thought comes from. Blizzard will (and is legally obligated to) only delete maps if the owner of the copyright you are assaulting is infact calling up Blizzard directly and telling them to delete it, and if that happens, chances are you really fucked up (they had to do that in WC3, too).
Blizzard doesnt care about copyrighted material in maps. A map of mine just got featured that obviously uses tons of copyrighted music and Blizzard couldnt care less. Lets not even get startet that there are infact anime maps and stuff and Blizzard doesnt care for those at all. I once made a map featuring alot of Captain Falcon (like, two years ago) and immediately some of the clueless people on this board came and were like "ZOMG blizz gonna delete it". Guess what? ITS STILL ONLINE.
Repeat with me: Blizzard is not satan. The way I see it, most of you are scared shitless of a boogeyman that doesnt even exist. You are all digging your own graves.
they deleted debates because it was dangerous for their platform (and will delete anything that comes to their attention that is.. dangerous to their platform)
otherwise i agree, you can publish mariokart.. as long as no one complains it will not be deleted
I don't think there's a map size limit (other than your total size limit). I uploaded one just over 20 MBs (sound files mostly pushing it over) less than a month ago.

My biggest one is 60 MB atm. There is no map size limit.

I'm just saying, any old person could whine to Blizzard about the content that my map contains, and Blizzard would remove the map. They told me so themselves.
The fact that you have a Captain Falcon map means the people who own that don't give a crap if you use it. I however will have about 350+ copyright infringements that someone could come to Blizzard about. It's not like I "really fucked up", the copyright infringements are simply portrayals of characters. Whether or not I make my own 3D models for it, which I am, it's still infringing the copyright to use their material. I didn't rip anything from any game, I looked on google for images of characters and cropped them into Icons, but I still could get deleted.
So yes, of course Blizzard doesn't enforce other people's copyrights, but like I said if someone whom works for infringed company/business/artist/corporation doesn't like it, or is having a bad day and thinks your map is an infringement, your map will most likely be deleted. And yes, Warcraft 3 had the same thing going on, except obviously nobody gave a crap enough to pick on some WC3 map, but now that Blizzard is some massive corporation everyone will take every chance they get to try and sue them. That is all I'm saying. Chances are my map will be deleted.

is absolute bullshit all the way through.
When you're infringing like 50 companies copyrights the chances go up by alot.
It's not when I've seen countless maps fall to the copyright demons, most of them didn't enter any money contests, most simply hit the front page and the wrong person saw it.
