The app store... Literally the same thing but with custom maps.
Don't assume that Blizzard intends to keep the system as it is and simply put a price on each map. We will be looking at some serious re-work here, I can almost guarantee it.
Also, the reason why there are so many uncompleted maps is because of the lack of incentive. For example, leaving mapping to get a job at Walgreens. I have no idea how anyone could possibly complain about creating new jobs, considering the circumstances...
Yeah, i agree with that in a way, but at the same sense, there are alot of mapmakers who work in teams, another thing is people who work heavily in teams, who gets the money, i think that could cause problems, Theres just so much, That i think should really be discussed. and thoroughly thought out.
and Honestly I dont care if you guys do charge for maps, this is probably going to happen in almost a year at least. Ill have a job by then LOL, just thought of that, :D
C'mon there are players who will pay real money for items in WoW and other RPG games, why not custom maps in SC2? A custom map has the potential of being very different from standard SC2 experience, more than some items can change your way of playing WoW.
Of course we can't expect people will pay as much as they do for a whole new game, but in my opinion its only limited by the map's quality.
EDIT: I just had an idea, maybe map makers could pay in order to use a specific mod as a dependency for their maps, that way some people could focus on creating new assets. Overall map quality would improve a lot, I guess. I feel I am more useful creating assets and helping people with data than working on a map that is rarely played.
Yeah I can see that, And i would pay for them, but only for a limited time, i still think a map should only be paid until it starts to loose popularity. Then it should be made free. Personally I dont like the fact that we cant keep all downloaded maps on our computer, because when starcraft 2 goes dead in another 15-18 years, we cant redownload and play our favorite maps, but thats no big deal.
THis whole map selling process will only work if they make Blizzard SC2 prepaid cards that are for sale in places like gamestop, no offense to anyone but id rather not have my card in the computer lol. I dont trust people like that.
There are not yet any maps with the compelling gameplay and sizable fanbase required to make a map marketplace viable. The viability of such a system depends on extraordinary quality and popularity. Blizzard has positioned itself to monetize community-generated content, to take advantage of the opportunity if a SC2 map should emerge with popular acclaim like that of WC3's DotA. Such a map has yet to materialize.
I see no reason why smascraft or photon cycles wouldnt clear the requirement for marketplace. Sure its hard to get players for smash with current system, but both games are pretty freaking awesome.
And I suppose sotis and such would be acceptable too? Even though they are not as good as original dota, but some people seem to enjoy them.
Half the reason for that is the lack of matchmaking >.> SotIS would be more than worth buying if it had a matchmaking system, plus the money might actually get the devs interested in balance instead of creativity :P
While THE Card Game is my map, it is only one of my SCII maps what has has been worked for a very long time.
Mafia as paid map would be awesome, because it would reduce the people who are not interested of it's gameplay style, from playing it (Unless there is trial option for maps).
Yeah I'm working on the warcraft 2/3 and i hope that we will be able to decide to release our mods for free or for price. I want my mod become high quality but i don't want it to become a premium mod which means lot of people won't have money to buy the maps and enjoy it. Fortunatly it will be problem only with the mulitplayer meele maps as i create a menu map where you can chose wich chapter you want to play. I'm working on it because i want a nice remake of the warcraft series and i want to bring it to the whole community not only for who have enugh money or chance to buy it. But i see the good side of the marketplace too, we will see exciting mods wich we would never see because of lack of motivation and money can be a good motivation. But well, we, users need money first to give the makers the motivation money.
Edit:
And here is threemod wich i think would worth paying for:

I assume maps that are already really successful like NOTD and Star Battle would sell just fine, personally I don't much believe in selling maps, it cheapens the medium and you won't really be able to live off of map-making, 999 times out of 1000 you won't anyway.
THanks man I love you lol, not in a gay way, I want that campaign for warcraft 2 sooo bad, I love that game, I would pay for it, (though ive bought 5 copies of BNE cant keep a CD for hell), If you need anything, any help or anything, I will be glad to help im not good with the map editor but anyhting non galaxy editor you need help with hit me up.
@rageofhell: If everyone's like you, sooner or later, developers will die hungry.
I bet you don't have smartphone eh? ohhh!! You jailbreak/root your phone, hence pirate all those apps? I bet your PC has all those torrents actively downloading. Man we don't need cheapo like you. You're nothing but a cancer to developers/programmer.
What about this, Why don't you make a great map then release it for free for us?? Would you do that? Answer this. I challenge you. Make a map, spend thousands of hours until it's good enough, then release it for free. If you're able to do that, I'll follow your path.
Oh right, you can't cos you know nothing about development you parasite. You should be ashamed of yourself.
I agree there will be idiots that release junk for 6 bucks. But if I were to see something that's REALLY good, I would have no issue paying 99 cents for it.
I hope they allow for a donation system though. Like you can donate for a really great map if you want, but don't have to.
Please Lock this thread.
To clear things up.
Map limit is about 20MB but you can go around that limit with using sc2mod files. Total space is about 200MB for mappers.

Really? oh didnt know that, Thanks for taking away that concern :D

lol, you gotta remember these are non official mods, so their not going to be worth a ton.

Well, based of the requirements blizzard said they would have for the marketplace, I have yet to play a map I would classify as good enough.
