1. Blizzard sees this as a huge opportunity, seeing that the arcade with the correct previsions can bring in vast donation money, to vastly improve on the editor. removing some focus from E-Sports.
This cannot and should not happen, esports and melee is the main point of the game and is also the money source for it for the game to stay alive. Though, now they could broaden their focus to include mapmaking as well...
I did not expect this to happen - because I've seen in War3 and SC2 such projects and they were great and no one gave them anything, so I thought this would be considered (just another good project but not exceptional, unique or extraordinaire).
p.s Gratz for the team, better use them wisely and for the purpose! Now that they got money for it, they need to do what no one else did to justify the money.
This equates to an income (before Kickstarter's cut and taxes etc) of $10,000 per year for both Ryan and Mille. Add in the latter, and it is down to about 6/7k per year ... unemployment wages are higher than that.
Tofu would break even at about the $400,000-$500,000 mark.
This is why when I say I lost $250,000 developing Tofu, I really did, it is a justified amount as the average wage for a male on my side of Australia is 6 figures and that is what I gave up because I had faith in the promises that were made to us. I will never get back that lost income unless I get a job in the games industry that is over 150k/year because I can go earn 120k/year driving a truck in my city, just to put things in perspective.
Having a 80k kickstarter after 3 years would be almost like a slap in the face. Obviously, Ryan is I dare say, a lot more privy to information than I am, or has better guesses, and has a rough idea of what is coming *if it comes*. Thus, he set SCU up to gain more income at that point.
Make no mistake, at least we as a community are now, no one can ever pull off this fluke again.
Ryan got super lucky when Blizzard stuffed up. Every move Ryan makes is plastered all over the front page of every major gaming website.
No other project can come close.
Yes I understand it is the idea of an MMORPG of Sc2 but come the f.. on ... you know as well as I do it comes down to Blizzard stuffing up because I dare say, how many times has Blizzard stuffed up like that? That is where the success of SCU comes from. Nothing more, nothing less.
For the rest of us, we are being forced to leave. Blizzard could save us, but at least as it stands now, they choose not to.
I know Eckonovokol (RNG - SOTIS/AOS) and I are gunning for the same position in life, and only one if any can succeed. This will define the future of what we can achieve through battle.net, does Blizzard support the innovators or do they support the copycats? I love RNG, as I do Ryan and Mille, obviously all of us at the top of the development community get along because we all hate the mods here with an equal passion, but we are all different, all seeking different outcomes based upon the same system.
The majority of the top developers have already left regardless if their project is active or not. And unless I get a lifeline from Blizzard I too will be forced to go. We are losing everyone because everyone lost too much money when Blizzard broke their promises. Some more than others.
Time will tell, do not attempt to copy this kickstarter, you will not succeed.
I say this not through spite, but through love for you all ... I don't want to see you fail.
Wait at least until things improve in the platform. :)
Ehhh I THINK I know what hes talking about, PM or add me on skype "Faintwolf" ill tell you in detail. (its not what your thinking)
As for the rest, Yeah hes right on a lot of it. except the part where he says he "lost" money, At the end of the day, Blizzard never made any promises, they simply stated it was in the plans, plans change...often, Modding is a hobby, and hobbies VERY rarely earn money, hobbies are something to do in your spare time, If you didnt have a job during this time well.... sorry?. but you haven't "Lost" Money because of mapping. What you did was pursue a job at blizzard selling maps would have never made 400,000. Squad TD only has 50k Reviews, I HIGHLY doubt any map would have been able to sell for more then 1$, So even the top played map would have never exceeded 50k. Chances are more jobs will open soon at blizzard, The arcade and the Melee is failing in Sc2, and they will most likely want to try to pick this back up, because wow will soon be over. and after WoW what will they have.
Just saying Dont give up, but dont put all your eggs into "plans", Plans fall through pretty quickly.
Initially we werent sure how the modding community would react to the entire Kickstarter thing, but in the end we were overwhelmed and happy with all the positive feedback you guys have given! :)

Sorry I haven't been more positive about it :P, I just worry a lot about possible outcomes of both sides, I am happy you were able to succeed though. I just didn't think you would, and that would have been bad for everyone. at the very least though some people made some money from the arcade and thats pretty cool.
Says the guy who always gave kneejerk reactions about paid maps on the arcade and that marketplace idea.
And I stand by that, This was donations which I have usually been a strong advocate of. :P, though I am not a huge fan of kickstarters I am not totally against them either.
So how much did Blizzard help them directly? I'm glad they made it and all, it would just seem like a bit less of a respectable feat if Blizzard were to have given them special treatment (models, assets, direct contact, etc.) For example, I remember a few hot topics of discussion about legal questions (on the Bnet forums) (obviously not answerable by the community) that were never answered by Blizzard.
I just really like the idea of a few people making money mapping (80k may not be long term sustainability, but it's not insignificant) without help. Doesn't seem as great if Blizzard were holding their hand the whole time. (I like parentheses.)
@Charysmatic: Go Blizzard didnt help with additional models or assets. The help was through featuring all their maps, making a few editor changes they needed (which is debatable, because those were needed by other map makers as well), among other things.
You claim to be a realist, yet put countless hours into a mediocre map, all because you have hopes to make money from it based on a vague statement that Blizzard once made at some point. Yeah... I dont buy it.
@zeldarules28: Go
i watched the entire video. i enjoyed it.

This is great to see happen. I cant wait to see whats next.

DogmaiSEA, the master pessimist.
Thank you very much guys, this means alot to us.

Didn't DarkRevnant make quite a bit of money just from Mafia donations?
And I stand by that, This was donations which I have usually been a strong advocate of. :P, though I am not a huge fan of kickstarters I am not totally against them either.
A few more hours to go and looking at the amount of backers within each amount, I realized someone actually selected the 10,000 dollar donation :O
I got a feeling it was one of the guys from the project :p

More like realist?
I like my simple life in the country, it is nice. Overall life is a good experience, developing for Battle.net, no so much.
Hopefully things change though ...
I enjoy my experience mapping on battle.net, Though its a huge waste of time I could be putting towards fighting cancer or something.
@DogmaiSEA: Go
You claim to be a realist, yet put countless hours into a mediocre map, all because you have hopes to make money from it based on a vague statement that Blizzard once made at some point. Yeah... I dont buy it.
@Crainy: Go
dogma is being dogmai :D
that shit is hard to take seriosly
has dogmai ever said anything bad about his own map? its just perfect I suppose...
