Anything with simply 'triggers' and edited 'data' files and a few custom sound files wouldn't suffice for a 'sell-able' map/mod... If you want to sell one, you have to at least have 75% of the content to be custom made, and that includes galaxy codes (meaning real programming) instead of triggers and imported content from 3d model editors and such.
So you're telling me that programming in Galaxy is acceptable but using GUI is not, when they are the same fucking thing? That has got to be the stupidest claim I've heard in awhile. The end result is what matters. No one is going to even know which one you used...
And 'real efforts' isn't spending 1000 hours on a map, where you simply adjust, balance, and tweak stuff, no. Real effort is in creating custom sfx, music, custom tilesets, custom models and animations, and custom codes that changes how SC2 plays entirely (like 95% not like a RTS or a 'faked' game type).
Haha, stupid elitist. Again, it is the end result that matters. No one cares if you spend 1000s of "real" hours making custom assets. If the game sucks, it sucks. You seem to have this notion that players appreciate the work a mapper does, but they don't. They only care if the game is fun, and that is all. You marginalize the work of game design because you have no understanding of anything really.
^That, is my expectation, because modders in the mod industry can do it, quite easily sometimes, why are mappers for SC2 slacking off?
Mappers are "slacking off" in SC2 because our editor is superior to ones for other games. Why reinvent the wheel? Just because Blizzard has made some tasks easier does not mean we are doing less work. Also, the audience for SC2 is less demanding when it comes to custom assets than say some FPS title. In other words, your expectations are in the wrong place.
50% of you would be willing to pay $5 for a model of a hat or a cool skin for your favorite hero in Sockem Boppem Action Fighters 2. Even more of you are willing to pay that (and more) each week for your favorite pop/coffee/alcoholic beverages. To think that many of you scoff at paying money for games when you happily empty your wallets for trivial junk is mind boggling.
Just think of how much you spend on movie theaters, restaurants and random other social events where you pay money to do something you don't really "need" to do.
And yet many of you want all free games all the time. . .
I have my own criteria I would use on what is payable or not. I'm sure the general mass would all agree to somewhat of the same kind of requirements that need to be met before they would consider purchasing a map. Mine probably fits in between the general mass. The requirements for "ME" are:
Very fun and has great replayability
Somewhat balanced (I'd expect balance improvements along the way)
Priced accordingly (No more than $5)
That's all I really care about. I'm sure others would have added to that or are a little stricter in some areas. I really don't care if it uses custom art, models, sound, voice acting or what not. Why would I care about that? If the map is fun, it's FUN. If it's cool, well sh*t it's cool man. If it does use it, well if it's fun, then sh*t it's still fun. I dun even know what I'm saying anymore.
IF THE MAP IS FUN I'LL PAY GOD DAMN 5 DOLLARS FOR IT
I'm sure Blizzard is doing that to encourage and reward their wonderful modding community for helping the game grow.
Plus, nobody would be blind enough to allow a game that doesn't have potential to slip into the market, even if it's just for a small price.
So yeah, I'm sure the games accepted will be able to get accepted by a majority of the community (Notice I didn't say all because some people will just QQ).
Yep, I'd definitely support it like they do, this is a big step for modding and kind of would bring more advantages compared to disadvantages.
I would also like to add that I would only pay for competitive type of maps. I will NOT pay for any kind of single player map. At all. It would have to at least compete with scores or something. Maybe not direct pvp, but something that will make me feel better when I totally beat some other nerd by sheer numbers. This makes my epeen's blood circulate quite a bit. I dunno, just my nerdom random thought.
Honestly, maps are starting to look quite good for these stuff, which I think they could deserve (If the creators wanted to, of course) the little pocket money to improve.
What I'm talking about right now would be the promising maps (To me, at least):
SmashCraft
MageCraft (If this continues)
As for Single Player maps, I wouldn't mind paying for a decent one, one that's fun even without multiplayer since I'd bet it'll be worthwhile.
What I think Blizzard was looking for could be in the elements of these mods, so yeah it seems rather legit to allow that for them(:
honestly if blizzard forces us to pay for maps im out, and im a developer it makes me sick to hear that people are arguing this, honestly for a game that is free to begin with why pay for it it would just turn into another wow. honestly blizzard wouldn't give the mappers the revenue i know it because well its blizzard, plus on top of that you buy a map per-say and guess what the lobby doesn't fill now you've paid for a map that no one plays. personally i would never charge to play one of my maps because well that just ruins it. you say you need bread on the table well get an fing job you lazy bum honestly map making can never be a career, why try and make it one.

I definitely think too hard when it comes to spending a dollar on casual mobile games. A dollar is nothing, yet I will still look up all kinds of reviews for cheap phone games and really pick and choose the one I want. But at the same time, I didn't think twice before I just spent a dollar for my League of Legends green Taric skin. Same champion, but now he is green instead of blue.
Oh come on, don't be mean. Though I agree that that post feels like flamebait.

As long as a game's:
Fun to play
Simple or complex (Depending on context)
Amazing/Amusing
Well-accepted and played by players
Even good enough for Blizzard to accept
Then I don't see why not, heck I'll definitely pay for it, considering that great maps are still possible from what I known.
I think this entire argument is moot.

A bit selfish, no?

Thank you for winning the thread.

It seems players can make a small fortunate via donations already anyways?
Example Mafia
that shouldn't stop the devs to go out and get a job, making money from maps is stupid plain and simple
@xXdRaGoNrIdDeRXx: Go
I agree with you, but at the same time we as a community shouldn't Discriminate against the ones that do.
That being said.
can a mod lock this post, Its necro lol.
This may be a noob question... But will you've able to move maps that were made in the original editor into the HOTS editor?
@ricklypop: Go
Yes. It's still the same editor. HotS only brings additions to the editor, aswell as a dependency with all of the new content.
Thank you, I'm happy that they did it that way.
i hope you can finely make 3d costum potraits

It's so weird.
