Game publishers stop supporting games and screw things up with updates all the time. Have you stopped buying retail games?
I agree, this fellow is in the audience-I-tend-to-dislike-intensely. Hate is such a strong word. You are in no way entitled to free content. I will probably charge a small amount of money for my maps because I spend so much time making them. If people actually support map makers by purchasing their content, there will be a real incentive to make the content worth purchasing. It's simple economics.
Right now I make maps for fun. And to boost my ego (or ruin it, lol.) But fun and ego don't put bread on the table.
I somewhat like that, but Im doubtful if you should display that many maps. I wouldnt mind Top5 maps and perhaps even lesser for new and noteworthy and such...dunno, but definetly should have scrollbars or something like that so you could see top10 if you want and so on...
having 50 maps might cause a little bit too much player scattering all over the place? This might not be the case, but still....I like clean UIs with not too much action going on...
I would even might to set notworthy and such maps like 1 map and drop down menu to see more. The queue should have quite high priority so like 10-15 maps displayed there is fine.
Probly would have to test things out myself to see what my ideal UI would be like...(hopefully they do something about gamevariants too...
Sixen was able to get a quick interview with some of the developers during blizzcon, so I'll add that here. Here's what was discovered:
Quote:
Water mechanics and 256x256 maps are on the list still, but not high enough priority.
Map protection is being worked on in time for the Arcade
Bank files being stored server-side is something they're talking about as a long-term plan.
HotS will be backwards compatible with WoL. Maps including WoL dependencies will be playable on HotS, but not vice versa. So, maps with HotS dependencies cannot be played via WoL. If players rip the assets from *HotS and put them in custom dependencies for WoL, the maps will be banned.
Star Tools will be released Soon(TM).
Lots of Custom Game Systems changes coming with HotS (discussed earlier)
Reviewing, Rating, filtering, better searching, and much more.
Well first, you might have noticed I removed up & coming because that's essentially the same thing (imo) as new & noteworthy.
But yeah don't take my mockup on such literal value. I just threw it together to highlight the room available for an active game lobby system. It is quite dense I'll agree, and could use some Apple-esque cleanliness.
Perhaps my scroll bars were a bit long, but I slightly disagree with your 1st and 3rd paragraph. Infact that's why everyone disliked Blizz's Arcade pic. It's funneling everyone into 8-10 maps and leaving no way other than fun-or-not (which is missing from their diagram) to play the other 100,000 maps. But I agree with you about 10-15 maps showing on queue box... scrollbar was just exaggerated lol.
I also do agree though that community splitting is bad. Hell, when Blizz added 'categories' that already split off a lot of people who never switch categories (in pre 1.3 list). On the one hand I like the way the Apple store did it, which they show 25 top apps then you can 'show more' to get the next 25... but with maps the issue is ALWAYS having an active lobby for it... something very different than ios/android app markets.
In the end, I think it's interesting to have what's hot, popularity, new & noteworthy, but as sort of 'side' boxes beside the main 'active game' list. That's what I was going for. But who knows how it would actually pan out.
If everyone's like you, sooner or later, developers will die hungry.
I bet you don't have smartphone eh? ohhh!! You jailbreak/root your phone, hence pirate all those apps? I bet your PC has all those torrents actively downloading. Man we don't need cheapo like you. You're nothing but a cancer to developers/programmer.
What about this, Why don't you make a great map then release it for free for us?? Would you do that? Answer this. I challenge you. Make a map, spend thousands of hours until it's good enough, then release it for free. If you're able to do that, I'll follow your path.
Oh right, you can't cos you know nothing about development you parasite. You should be ashamed of yourself.

@progammer: Go "Blizztard" icon coming soon, I'd say it definitely has to become some kind of achievement for custom games lol. I'll upload it in the next update of my icon packs.

Right now I make maps for fun. And to boost my ego (or ruin it, lol.) But fun and ego don't put bread on the table.
But you DON'T really rely on SC2 to put bread on the table, that's a stupid idea.
For developers and modders, making money off of this is more like chump change, not a "Wham-Bam Thank You KA-CHING!". I'd expect average mapper and modders to make a few bucks and probably up to 100 bucks average on a popular sale. But it's always a smart idea to NOT let greed get the best of you and ruin your reputation because you made every single map costs money and everyone starts copying that.
At that point, the marketplace will divide into, quality 'decent' maps for a dollar, and crap maps for free or a few cents.
I think its smarter for blizzard themselves to judge the value of your maps and players will have to discuss the pricing with the publisher themselves... But then again, capitalism and greed will ensue because some publishers likes to profit as much as possible...
-.-
In short: Be wise, avoid being greedy and pissing people off because you want to charge one dollar per map 'to put bread on the table', you can achieve the same thing without pissing people off by asking them to 'donate' instead and offer the map for free, which results in a harder to gauge revenue but at least its free and people who really likes it may pay you for it (hence becomes a matter of proving your worth to the community, and not your biased feelings on how much your map is worth).
Because as I see it, SC2 mappers are NOBODY compared to game modders and developers in the indies industry and the game industry. Your roles are miniscule and you gotta understand how much you are trying to bite off the game industry. You can be the popular guy who invented dota, but still is small time unless you start making actual games (I think he was well known in the WC3 community but nowhere else at the time).
Yes you aren't entitled to freebies, but you also aren't entitled to be paid for anything.
Karma's a bitch, as what goes around comes around.

If you are a smart bastard who goes to school and graduates from college, you would have financial support because you are able to get a job.
The real world really is "Why should I pay you for what you offer" and the real world really is cruel to such developers.
Grow up.
People want to know the value of what they are buying, BEFORE they buy it.
They would want to know if it's already offered for free somewhere else, and if there's other ways to get it for free first. This is a natural way of thinking and you know that, deep down inside that people will consider testing free stuff before buying ANYTHING on the marketplace.
SC2 Marketplace will likely also be full of plagiarism, so no one will buy because of the fear of loss of money over something that can be free (they don't care if its legit or not).

Thank God Angry Birds developers didn't listen to you bro... Otherwise they wouldn't be Billionaire as they are today.
And this holds true for many other mini-games developers too...
I know you never got a chance to enjoy Angry Birds because you're poor, ignorance, cheap, and don't want to pay 99c for stupid games like that.
But you DON'T really rely on SC2 to put bread on the table, that's a stupid idea.

If you don't want to spend money don't buy it then. As simple as that. I just want you to stfu. just stfu.
Dont lecture us what to do with our maps period. Let us decide to put or not to put price tags ourselves. Your opinion is worthless. I trust Blizzard judgement on this. Even Blizzard is supporting putting price tags. Why should I listen to you.
And your words are words of cowards. You basically just told this community that we suck, we cant do shit, we should quit modding, and stop trying so hard to get into game industry. Don't tell us what we can't do.

Why would you get pissed? If you don't have money that's too bad. You don't have $100 you cant get collector's edition of SC2. Why should Blizzard be sorry about you and reduce the price? No such thing. I/mappers never force you to pay us $1 or $4.99. Never. Stop telling us what to do.
Funny you mention Karma. You don't have money. Heck yeah Karma's a bitch. Maybe your parents did something bad back then. There goes Karma, now u r homeless and poor, dont even have 99c to buy map...

Does anyone know where the screenshots for the marketplace were found? There's a sweet Marine Arena logo used that I want in our version.
