dumbdumbdumbdumbdumb
@fxsdcf: Go
atleast in warcraft 3 u could easily skim the list to find a DBZ Tribute or a Naruto Wars or whatever else strikes your fancy other then Dota
this list just drops these dumb games @ the top, and u have to keep on clicking show more to find something new
further more u can't name your game, so the only way to fill it with ur friends is to invite them directly, which, with the whole "auto-start" thing, can be difficult, u get no chance to boot people to give ur friends slots if they decide they wanna join at a point in time after you made the game public
atleast let us toggle autostart off
THERE IS A VERY EASY, SIMPLE FIX.. at least, it would help with the problem a little bit and blizzard doesn't have to program anything big. Just add a search box. Want to play a good map you heard about here at sc2mapster? you no longer have to search for it in a long list, just type the name in. As long as the map is well known and popular OUTSIDE of the actual game, people will still have easy access to it, which will RAISE its popularity. But the sytem needs to be fixed.
I always played new maps in WC3. Just downloaded some new map with a good description or good rating at for example thehiveworkshop. Then just host it and people would join. It never failed, I could always play any map I wished.
In SC2 that is totally failed, out of thousands of maps I can only play a couple, which is much worse than in WC3.
The system is pretty much inferior in every way possible.
Playing Devil's advocate for a second...
Just because blizzard wipes out the popularity list doesn't mean they wipe out GAMES BEING PLAYED WHEN THEY WIPE IT OUT, right?
So therefore, all the games currently in progress will reapply a 'popularity point' upon completion, hence why the list rebuilds itself to look basically the same in the same order.
I have to say though, I just published my map two days ago and I'm sitting pretty on page one, so I'm really happy, but I still acknowledge there are serious faults in the system.
I may be a bit pompous, but perhaps like khazr said
"If you maps are good enough they will rise eventually"
Good for the mindless masses, mind you.
Not realy, Its just that the mission is quickly over, People die in about 10 mins and your leftover with like 2 people, you leave because the mission is too hard to duo. Then the game gets remade.
@BuuGhost: Go or Like the "unit test map" shot up to number one, because it starts with one player :> (and some ppl want to test units)
Lol the first page posts.
I had a map on page 1 and I still dislike the system. Maybe I'm different than other people, but I played Nexus, red circle, etc. just once and that was enough. I think it's because we were spoiled in warcraft 3... much easier to make high quality maps. It's like we've gone backwards...
I would kill for a zoators TD or a (finished & playable) line tower wars or something cool... that's not to say all new maps are bad on sc2... just some of the ones I've tried that seem to be popular, I don't really see the interest.
The problem is if that a Zoators TD does come out and I want to play it and its not popular... GG too bad for me :(
Wiping out the popularity list only to have the same maps at the top of the list shows nothing. All it shows is that the popularity system sucks even more and once bad maps become popular, people will continue to play them even after the popularity list has been cleared.
For example, Red Circle TD becomes popular, everyone plays it. When the list gets cleared, people aren't going to suddenly forget it exists and stop playing it. They're going to keep playing it at the same rate, which makes it popular on the list again.
a very simple feature of giving new maps a chance would be to add a "Newest Map/Last Uploaded/What ever that shows newest maps" category
What if I find that perfect relaxing fun map that I want to play 20 pages down, but it requires four players? If no one else goes down that far I will never be able to play it, I will leave, and it will not get popular. Have you ever tried Nexus wars by yourself?
Exactly. The problem with the current system is if your map isn't popular, it's impossible to get even one person to join. It wouldn't be so bad if there were actually channels where you could gather your friends and friends of friends to play with you, but bnet 2.0 doesn't even have that. Bnet 2.0 sucks all over.
Seems that basically you have to make a SHORT map with FEW players WITHOUT guide but with a lot of FACE APPEARANCE OF FUN. The map doesn't actually have to be fun, it just has to seem that way to people that completely don't get your map because you didn't include a guide.
Boom, tons of games being created.
There's actually a lot of crap maps on that popularity listing. At least 75% of those maps are completely broken or jibberish. 1000000 zerglings (a classic from sc1) was broken if you had more than 5 players, making it into a melee FFA with player controlled zerglings attacking. Poker Defense was broken also, it doesn't work properly before the popularity refresh, and heck I'd bet it doesn't work now either. That version of helms deep is way too inaccurate, even sc1 helms was more accurate than that. The heroes and the unit balace are so ridiculously off that it's not funny. I found a perfect minigame map 14 pages down, I had to play it alone since no one would join. THIS MAP WAS BUG FREE WTF? really, if popularity system isnt at fault, what is? good unbroken maps were too good to be played that's why they're at the bottom of the list?
Btw, can anyone explain how there's 15 baneling arenas, several golems and poker defense and some number of other maps that were previously popular on my list? This is seriously worse than dota.
If people REALLY BADLY want their good map going to the top of the list, a good start would be to get the required amount of players and make a vid for it explaining a bit about it throw it up on Youtube... i put up a vid about a game that aint nearly as popular as Starcraft and i got my first comment about 5 days later.. i was like "whoa... was i just lucky or is there really THAT big a chance of people seeing it?" then think of SC2.. all you have to do is put the most common searched words for SC2 vids into your vid... like the title saying like "Starcraft 2 - <name of new custom map here>"(maybe even put "Custom Map" in the Title..) and then put the words "new" and "custom" and "map" into your description and you allready got a VERY HIGH CHANCE of someone finding your movie and thinks "wow, i gotta try that out", he/she go tell the friends and boom, people playing your map ;P
because "new" is such an accurate description in 3 month from now.. i so hate people who release maps like "generic hero arena - latest version" its completely pointless.
All the whineage on the general board is bad enough as it is without people necroing topics from two months ago, thank you.
