Of course i know what they are and i've played them, i'm just saying, they are AoS games. Even if they look like dota in some ways, would you say that call of duty is a counter strike clone with better graphics? You can find the same guns!
Of course i know where you are coming from but i still don't agree calling those games dota clones.
Thanks for ruining my day by mentioning my favorite game series turned utter garbage, COD that is.
Also I like AOS type games but I don't think the genre is going to last if it's going to be flooded like this. The AOS community is spread to thin as it is.
But if DotA is taken from AoS, and HoN + LoL are taken from DoTA, than by the transitive property of game types, HoN and LoL are also taken from AoS, and can be referred to as AoS clones just like DoTA?
Does it matter what we call it?
S2 doesn't deny that it's DotA 2.0. (S2=Maker of HoN).
And to the somewhat strange dude saying the UI of HoN is a ripoff from Wc3.... Compare C&C with SCII for me ... I cant recall the difference...
Anyway. This is news, never has it been confirmed that Valve was making a new dota. I would even dare to say it's pretty stupid to do it right now.
Many players are staying at Wc3, afraid of changes or not willing to pay for something new. Others are playing HoN / LoL, but honestly. I do not think there is much more room for any other game. You got them all:
DotA - Original, cheap.
HoN - Upgraded engine and new content.
LoL - Free with altered gameplay.
As stated before, the community is not big enough for 4 games.
But the new Valve DotA has the potential of Steam community, so many players that never have heard of any of these games will see the new Valve DotA game as something new.
And also Valve has the "ability" to make gold from everything they make (like with Portal, TF2, HL, etc).
If it was up to me, HoN would have EVERYTHING from the current DotA. WC3 has horrible delay, shitty hosting system, shitty resolution, outdated graphics. HoN came out to fix all the problems WC3 had, since DotA was getting so big. They didn't RIPOFF DotA, they fucking made DotA for 2010 standards, sadly they let down in some other areas IMO.
League of Legends is based off the style of game DotA is (You could say an AoS), but everything in it is genuine and unique. Not a ripoff at all, it plays surprisingly different from DotA, I would know I played DotA for 4 years and I still play LoL today.
What this has to do with Valve releasing DOTA? IDK... But after reading some posts I had to backup some of my favorite games (bros b4 hoes).
To stay on topic, YES! Icefrog (hate him or love him) is working with Valve to make what I expect to be an amazing game. I mean fuck, it's Valve.
The way things are right now on SC2, I really hope there is no DotA for it. I'd rather see unique game ideas for SC2 over remakes (aka ALL THE FUCKING GAMES OUT RIGHT NOW).
I'd rather see unique game ideas for SC2 over remakes (aka ALL THE FUCKING GAMES OUT RIGHT NOW).
FYI, pretty much any good idea for a conventional map has already been used in either StarCraft or WarCraft, needless to count any other RTS games with a map editor. And then there is always nostalgia of playing an old SC1 map on SC2. That's more or less what's driving me to remake "Pick your Defense" for SC2.
Still there is opportunities to try new things that weren't possible before, but most of those will come at later dates. With the game's release only a couple of weeks ago it's still an infant.
I would say Heroes of Newerth is a clean Rip-off of dota where they practically just make their own version of DoTa heroes. League of Legend is more of a rip-off of the concept itself, but with additions like vision blockers like in SC2 and more unique heroes. Demi-god was a failed attempt of using the DoTa concept.
And there is more games out there already released or in the making that utilize the "Online Multiplayer Arena" game concept.
Pong was the first game with the joystick. Now all those other games that uses the joystick is a rip-off? What about the many TD maps and flash games. I guess they are all ripoffs
Everything is a ripoff of something but that doesn't mean they are good. DotA is not a Rip off of AoS. Its an evolved version of it.
DemiGod was a way better DOTA than the current starcraft 2 dota.
I seriously dont know why that didn't go big, apart from the lack of demigod units i guess. I think there were 8 on release and an extra two via patch.
HOPEFULLY, VALVE will create a first person DOTA ;-P
sorry i am not a map maker , i just play games.. and i played lots of games....
in order to rip something off , u just take the original and use it... with the releases of HoN and LoL ... there is not anything in common with Defense of the Ancients , well yes some items are the same and some spells.. but its an entirely new game...+ a whole new items.. skills , heroes and history...
so it cant really be called "rip off" ...
just because all Tower defenses , all Aeon's of Strife .. and dota maps typically , start from somewhere.. doesnt mean they are rip offs .. its like saying all the currently released games... are rip offs , because.
1 there was > the 1st ever made first person shooter ? are all other shooters rip offs ???
what about the strategy games ? and etc etc... actually its taking the idea of the game and creating something new.. that is not rip off
that is invention.. to create something new with a "product" (hope u do not mind if i call it that) or information from something else....
if nobody ever decided... to > make a game .. we would not be here now :)
the main concept of the game is to have fun.. when people have fun its okay... it does not matter even if its a rip off.
the thing that is important from game is to enjoy it .. and that is all :) , its really sad when people all ways find similarities in the new games... from the old ones.. well of course they start from somewhere.. ahead from the 1st guy that created it.. but they make something exceptional and cool
( well i do agree there are a lot of "clones , and rip offs that , are really bad made and non interesting... but i do not think the majority of games should be called rip offs and clones just because.. .they have heroes and items.... and they have to defend something.. or make a tower...)
p,s
oh sorry i got a bit over the thread :)
well a valve game would be cool , since valve make good first person shooters.. i personally hope its a FPS because that what valve are good at .. and game would rock.. but if they try something new.. i will still like it but , it just might not go ...bang with a very big boom :) , but still valve is a good game maker.. i expect something exceptional :)
defense of the ancients is just a mod...they cant really own a mod....its like saying.. hey we made dota , cant touch this.. that is quite funny...
well they cant own trademark "dota" because its already used as a mode... if they filed something like that , they have no right to do so.. and probably they wont :)
maybe its just a speculation :}

They can get DoTA as a trademark as long as no one else has. They can't own the Warcraft III mod, but they can create a game in the same vein and name it Defense of the Ancients- Unless someone else has already filed a trademark for DoTA.
Counter Strike was originally a Half-life mod. Valve owns Half-life, of course. They should be alright as long as they don't use any code from Warcraft III.
This is pretty old news actually, he posted this several months ago in his blog (or just beginning of summer, I forgot when). Just hope he doesn't do what HoN and LoL did to dota, make it into child's play. The current dota in wc3 became so popular was because of the restrictions and graphic limitations. IT DID NOT LOOK LIKE 10 YEAR OLD GAMES!!! RLY? and focused on GAMEPLAY over anything overly flashy or eyecandy. My opinion is unchanged after several weeks of playing both and got laughed at by teammates saying that my GTX 275 can't run the game correctly that's why I have such poor graphics. Rly ? running Crysis on ultra obviously means running low on LoL... Let's hope icefrog gives us something good at least.
BTW, wc3 doesn't have that bad of lag, shitty hosting, and connection problems (mainly disconnecting and unable to rejoin like HoN). These problems only occur in pubs and low leagues, join a good league and you'll get access to reconnecting programs and 10 ms games everygame via GHost bots. I believe the good points of LoL got defeated here since wc3 can use reconnection system and reliable hosting also....

Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, Demigod off the top of my head.

Sort of like Team Fortress 2 but DOTA style....

What I think is hilarious is that Valve is trying to trademark the title DoTa Article Link.
I was about to post the same :)
