Or they can simply drop this whole "You're making maps in OUR game, so we win, go die." And that pretty much nullifies them having to deal with this crap. Not to mention they can slap on the "Online interaction not rated by the ESRB." tag and their good. It's what every other game company is doing and you don't see then getting sued for maps with nigger or that promote drug use in them.
And the whole point of this thread isn't just about the map, it's about the contradictory and ironic rules they set in place and it's been stated several times now that they didn't do it in past games simply because they were short of man power. But now that they have the people, they are going to police their games, which, is stupid. And which is why everyone's in an uproar, not because "OMFG SWASTIKA /CRY"
And I agree, WoW is still dominating, but it won't be after ToR. And as long as they allow multi-boxing, they will continue to dominate in sales.
Yes, because we are all pulling this out of our asses right? Because this is the first time Blizzard has been this anal about something so completely stupid, right? Because, this is the first time people have complained about bad choices on blizzards part, and blizzard not making up for it.
No, all the posters before you were pulling stuff out of their asses. Or really, not even that, as they didn't give any compelling arguments at all. You've just, finally, given me something to work with. Now to disprove it.
Look at WoW 6 years ago. It was a great MMO that completely fucked all other MMO's ever to be created over the next two years back at release. It actually took time and dedication to actually get anywhere and you couldn't reach end-game in a month. Now look at what Blizzard has done to WoW simply because they want to appeal to a broader audience because that gets them more cash.
Not a fact, no argument.
They want to pull in casuals who can pick up the game, and beat it in less than a month. You can pug the strongest fucking character ever to exist in lore and don't even have to try.
Ah, I knew this was going to be pulled in somewhere. I'll give you my standard response. Did you kill the Lich King 25 man heroic without the buff? Or heck, even with it? No, you didn't. You're one of those annoying people that complain about how raiding used to be hardcore and is now easy, but hasn't actually managed to down all if even much raiding content. If you haven't been there, you've got no right to comment. What Blizzard has done with the simplification of raids is make end-game accessible to everyone, while still keeping the more hardcore parts in it intact in the form of hardmodes (and since IcC, the buff).
What has Blizzard done to bring back the old feeling of WoW that 80% of it's playerbase on a daily basis states they miss?
80%? You counted them? These percentages are worth shit if your data isn't empirical. For all people you know "that have this feeling", I can supply my guild and half my server stating the opposite.
Not a damn thing. What about the gold spammers and gold farmers that hog up your channels and spam you randomly? Nothing's done.
They ban accounts in waves. Every 6 months you'll see an announcement message that another X thousand accounts have been banned. Also, the easy report system was added. Not saying they're doing everything they can, but they aren't doing nothing.
They simply do not care about their player base anymore or their community.
Again, not a fact, and certainly not an argument.
How long as this popularity system been in place? And how long have people been complaining about it? I'll answer for you, the moment the system became flawed. And it's been quite a while.
The popularity system is actually more interesting to discuss. How long has it been in place? An entire BETA, and a week or so since launch. That said, it's hardly a valid argument because of various reasons:
A) It's not unlikely to be changed. We've all heard the messages about the whole map market thing, and it's certainly not a stretch that they're sorting out the details of all that before they throw in an entire new system of how popularity works.
B) Whether it's flawed is debatable. It certainly sounds bad, but if you want to throw in personal data, it's been working pretty well for me so far.
C) The game has only been out for a week or so. It's too short of a time to properly judge whether the system works. We'd need to check back in a month or three to have a clear statement.
There has been two patches to Starcraft in 2 weeks. Both that fix problems I've never even seen before. What about the count down timer that everyone complains about? What about this crappy popularity system that's been implemented that's killing maps I've never even heard of because they are at the bottom of the popularity list? Why did they water down multiplayer? What happened to the broad choice of units from the first Starcraft? Why is the game 60 dollars?
What a horrible and boring list that is. That's not arguments for how Blizzard is being a horrible company, that's you letting your emotions run wild without thinking, and yet again, slapping numbers on data that's not empirical. Not even going to bother with them.
Also, you mention TOS's and UELA's. Have you read the map editors? It states that the map editor (Which this whole thread is based on) is not supported by Blizzard themselves, when they're the one's who used the damn editor to make the game in the first place. And that customer support will not help with Editor related issues. From what I've seen you guys post on here, custom maps are the soul and heart of Blizzards games, and Blizzard could give a shit less about the people who use the Editor, or they'd directly support the tool themselves. Blizzard wants to regulate something they don't even support.
I'm sorry, but... how thick can you be? There are entire FORUMS dedicated to the 'art' of making maps. In case you hadn't noticed, we have a TUTORIALS SECTION filled to the brim with stuff about the editor. If Blizzard were to support the tool, they'd have to hire thousands of additional employees and even then couldn't answer all questions that would be thrown at them. It's simply not a feasible option. It's like asking the government to give support to 'drawing on paper'.
It's not Terms of Use, it's "We want to make the game a nice place for little kids to enjoy and have fun playing! ^_^". Last time I checked, the Halo series was rated M, and Starcraft is a lot more violet than Halo. And look at the player base of Halo, or any console game for that matter. Most console games are rated M anyways.
Obviously, these rules could end up being literal and they will indeed have people on it 24/7. When this starts happening, THEN you can come to me with your stories of how Blizzard is a horrible fascist company and why we should all quit buying their products because of this. Until then, I'm going to assume it's another list of strict legal rules, as have been included in pretty much every single game on the market.
tl;dr person the post is directed at is a moron.
Note that I didn't start the namecalling, but right back atcha. You want to prove me wrong, you come up with decent arguments, not "Oh, oh, I heard you could PUG IcC and my map isn't becoming popular, therefore the systems MUST be flawed, EVERYONE agrees with me and everyone at Blizzard is a fascist for enforcing this COMPLETELY NEW AND UNSEEN policy".
Mozared, with all due respect I believe you are atleast slightly bending all information toward your decided opinion... Just like everyone else here, me too.
The posts in this topic seem to have been used to express people's problems with Blizzard as of late rather than the policies at the top, of course, and I tend to agree.
As I see it it's the partnership between Activision and Blizzard that's to blame, but is probably not the case. I guess by blaming Blizzard for casualising WoW and whatnot people are trying to identify their recent problems with the game. I myself have not PuG'ed ICC25 etc. and I probably won't seeing as I'm not actively playing anymore but I don't think that encounters are easier, just filling the requirements for trying them is ~ and that's probably a good thing...
Yet, WoW somehow really lost it's charm and I am unable to identify what's causing this and I feel I have to burst out at every other change Blizzard has made to WoW the past 2 years or so.
Well anyway, as I see it this, the SC2 mapmaking community, is facing more and more problems, and as stated it's a less and less hospitable environment. And Blizzard seem to be enforcing their policies, instead of just using them for legal purposes, as we have witnessed already after 1 week post release. I'd love if they just posted "We do not take any responsibility whatsoever for user created content, go sue someone else" in there instead.
Also, I think it's obvious that the custom map/popularity system they have on bnet is utter shit. There is no search function, no index, no genres or tags - only 'This map is popular, play it', effectively mainstreaming maps that are made first. I don't understand what they were thinking, and designing it after XBOX Live? W T F?!?! Atleast that's how I interpret hiring the designers of it. It's not really simplistic, it's just stupid because of all the limitations. I'm quite upset with how custom content is treated in SC2, atleast melee works Great. Hosting is laggy, maps are plagued with input lag and so on, maps are still limited to a very small amount of disk space.
I think it's totally understandable to neglect local hosting because of the obvious piracy problems, but it causes alot of problems they will have to fix with their yet very limited bnet client. I fail to believe they will seriously try to fix this, they are comercially successful with all their crap already, and I agree with that Blizzard is losing contact with the community and the only <big> game company I still believe in is Valve. I expect my trust will falter soon enough though.
I may have forgot some things, but please put what's here in consideration before bashing me.
You didn't bash me, so I see no need to return the favor. Your post actually makes some sense. My problem here is with the people on page one who are going nuts over this list of rules, abandoning all other thought - not with people who simply feel like Blizzard is losing touch with it's community. That's a legitimate concern and though there's a lot of debate possible to what extend it's true, it can't be denied that they are throwing down some fairly radical changes, at the least.
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Blizzard invests funds into scouring maps for inappropriate content, while ignoring the fact that 95% of the maps won't actually be played by anyone?
They should have hired one person, told him to try the first 5 pages of maps, then given him another job, knowing the top 100 would never significantly change anyway.
Edit: good thing I never uploaded my offense/defense map, because when the zerg break through after the main terran objective is fulfilled, the terrans can use a cyanide pill to force a draw. OMG SUICIDE.
So far as I can tell, at least with their policy, seems to be more of a do as I say, not as I do, given throughout the course of the campaign, they break quite a few of those rules. Final cinematic anyone? =p
I'm sure that these rules won't significantly hamper the mapmaking community though... *cough*
"Blizzard posts a set of terms of use, everybody goes absolutely MENTAL over it, claiming this is part of an elaborate scheme of 'Blizzards downfall', I point out that it might not be that bad though even readily admit that there might be something fishy going on about Blizzard".
-It's called Activision, they poison everything
Want to argue?
Step 1: Name 1 game Activision has purchased rights to that isn't crap now.
Step 2: Be angry because you spent time looking for something that doesn't exist.
Step 3: Never admit you were wrong.
Step 4: Become an asshat.
"Blizzard posts a set of terms of use, everybody goes absolutely MENTAL over it, claiming this is part of an elaborate scheme of 'Blizzards downfall', I point out that it might not be that bad though even readily admit that there might be something fishy going on about Blizzard".

You've done a pretty good job at step 3 and 4 already, so you're ahead of yourself. Step 2 can't be proven or disproven at the moment, which is all I'm saying. You want to go and believe in something without knowing whether or to what extend it's true? Be my guest and leave, I don't want you in my community anyway.
I think this "controversy" is being taken too far...
Suffice it to say, Blizzard reserves the right to ban your map from their servers if they deem it to be in any way offensive. Why is this surprising? Let's not go overboard - this isn't fascist or big business pushing around the little guy. Those guidelines are just that, guidelines. They're entirely reasonable. Use your head, what they're referring to is: you can't make a map recreating a genocide... and you can't make a map where the object is to burn down a synagogue or a church... This is generally offensive. Seems fair, no?
Someone was offended by the content of your map and reported it. It got banned. Get over it.
Next time, maybe you'll read through the 32,000 words. Seems a tad irresponsible to publish them without having any idea what could be in there. After all, it's your online reputation and your account.
PS: What the hell are you guys talking about. There are maps on the NA servers right now named Final Fantasy Open RPG and Resident Evil and Dragon Ball Z, not to mention European Risk, etc etc... so clearly you're over reacting.
PPS: Bottom line is, you are playing their game. If you can't accept the fact that they reserve the right to enforce the rules as they see fit, don't buy the game, don't play the game. Go read a book or do something productive. This is video game land now... there is no inalienable right to free speech in video game land.
You can make and put whatever the hell you want in your map. Blizzard will not care. That is UNTIL some loser or idiot reports your map, then your map goes bye bye. So if Square Enix decides to email Blizzard saying that they'll like to have the Final Fantasy game removed, Blizzard will do so. If you make a game about overthrowing churches (which I don't see why not, it's completely within the freedoms of speech anyways and religion is bullshit) and Vatican came along and talked to Blizzard about it, Blizzard will deem it offensive. Basically THERE ARE NO FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. If you put some religious things inside a game badmouthing some atheists. Some atheists MIGHT REPORT YOUR GAME then Blizzard will ban it.
So far the cases I've heard of follows this method. Map is fine. Some reports. Map gets banned.
Next time, maybe you'll read through the 32,000 words. Seems a tad
irresponsible to publish them without having any idea what could be in
there. After all, it's your online reputation and your account.
How can I lose reputation because of a dictionary? When I published the dictionary without fully reading it, I had in mind the idea that random words with no context and no sentence would not offend anyone to the point of reporting a map. Whoever felt offended and reported it did that even knowing that he/she was offending the whole starcraft community.
I bet it was like:
"I'm a middle-age mother, and I'm fucking reporting this shitty map because my naughty 8-years-old son is fucking saying fucking bad words because of this stupid game. Last night, that son of a bitch called me a dyke!"
Erm, a person who is so damn bothered by a random bad word to report a map should be... I can't even describe his state of mind. Must be something similar to a fanatic vegan. Why blizzard's politics about such things is so agressive? Doesn't make sense.
Ill just copypasta and try to translate them to a description of it
Racial/Ethnic/National
•Has any racial/ethnic connotations - Your map cannot be racist, IF you are making a Real life kinda map, But it could be versus the terran and an ugly zerg.
•Has any national connotations - Your map cannot contain real life nations, tho made up will be allowed.
Extreme Sexuality/Violence
•Refers to extreme and/or violent sexual acts ---\
•Refers to extremely violent real life actions or events - Self Explained
Sexual Orientation
•Refer to any aspect of sexual orientation pertaining to themselves, other players, or in-game characters - Self Explained
Obscene/Vulgar
•Is an inappropriate reference to human anatomy or bodily functions - Dont lol, i just dont know what it means. Alrite?
•Is pornographic in nature - Self Explained
Harassing or Defamatory
•Insultingly refer to other characters, players, Blizzard employees, or groups of people, be they in the game or external Blizzard Employees - You cant generally insult players and all that with the map, like the point is to mock them, but CHARACTERS? lolwut? (hmm, i feel it got messed up)
•Customer support representatives or employees of Blizzard Entertainment (Both real names and aliases) - Don't use the blizz guys as people, just make it up.
Inappropriate
•Is a mildly inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions - Dunno again, lulz
•Is a reference to illegal drugs or activities - Ofcourse you cannot make a commercial for drugs on a sc2 map. Nor make him buy them ingame, tho im sure it would be allowed to make up a drug.
•Has neutral or positive racial/ethnic/national connotations - Just dont use real life nations, races, ethics.
•Has any connotations of major religions or religious figures (i.e. Jesus, Christianity, Buddha) - This will insult alot, if your making a god map, use the pharaos for example. (Plenty of gods there, free to use)
•Is otherwise considered inappropriate for the game world - Lolwut, ehm, i suppose this means that you cant have random stuff not fitting in, example, A TOILET ON CREEP, hear that blizz?
Advertising
•Any non-beneficial businesses, organizations, or websites
Trademark This category includes both clear and masked content which: - Just dont make real ads, be creative, be real, Drink Nuke Cola.
•Is trademarked/licensed by a company or an individual - And dont use real brand names. Made by Ghost Academy.
I hope i explained some more. WAR MAPS IS allowed, just if you dont re create, RISK Map is allowed, just use, Starcraft 2 names, Klingon names, whatever, Starcraft 1 too. you could even use the maps names. For example, Blistering sands is a country in Taccoville ( Look through the signs) So is Agria valley and all of these.
How can I lose reputation because of a dictionary? Alright, using the example they gave you: dyke. Not to be confused with the word dike, and no, the two are not interchangeable. Google any online dictionary. Because this is a word with no double meanings, it needs no context or sentence. It can only be taken as a derogatory slang for lesbian. So, I bet a more accurate situation was something like: "I'm a girl and I'm reporting this, because that word is offensive." or "I'm a guy and I'm reporting this, because that word is offensive."
If it were a word like queer, then I could see your point. It could mean either odd, strange, or it could be used as a derogatory slang for gays.
Erm, a person who is so damn bothered by a random bad word to report a map should be... I can't even describe his state of mind. Must be something similar to a fanatic vegan. Why blizzard's politics about such things is so agressive? Doesn't make sense.
But it does make sense. They have a duty to provide a non-hostile environment for their gamers. I think they generally expect the norms of social etiquette... that is to say, for the most part, they're not going to have to do a lot of moderating because most people are reasonable (hence why we see games like Risk, despite this apparently being in breach of their rules). However, if a map is reported they have to take it seriously.
Alright, using the example they gave you: dyke. Not to be confused with the word dike, and no, the two are not interchangeable. Google any online dictionary. For the sake of argument:
Taken from leo.org, online dictionary.
Taken from answers.com.
Aaaand taken from BeeDictionary.com.
And if it's only a derogatory word for a lesbian then was does this mean?
lol Ok, I may be eating my words on that. Perhaps the UK version is different from the North American version... however, the word here is not interchangeable.
Hence, why, if you use the word dyke even on the forums as opposed to dike, you get a spell check error.

I bet it was like: "I'm a middle-age mother, and I'm fucking reporting this shitty map because my naughty 8-years-old son is fucking saying fucking bad words because of this stupid game.

I hope i explained some more. WAR MAPS IS allowed, just if you dont re create, RISK Map is allowed, just use, Starcraft 2 names, Klingon names, whatever, Starcraft 1 too. you could even use the maps names. For example, Blistering sands is a country in Taccoville ( Look through the signs) So is Agria valley and all of these.
Tho i hope this makes sense :>
For the sake of argument:

Aaaand taken from BeeDictionary.com.
And if it's only a derogatory word for a lesbian then was does this mean?
Also taken from leo.org.
@slaydon: Go
hey i just realised your to young to play sc2.
@s3rius: Go
lol Ok, I may be eating my words on that. Perhaps the UK version is different from the North American version... however, the word here is not interchangeable.
Hence, why, if you use the word dyke even on the forums as opposed to dike, you get a spell check error.
