Heya Mapster-dudes and girls if there are any! (?)
I'm probably not the first one to get hold of this idea and maybe its already active I dunno. But what about having mapsters sign up to a list and then we send around the map inbetween everyone in this list where everyone gets one day to work with it. The map should have a theme of some kind, maybe "Survivial" or something I dunno. And then when you have passed through the whole list the last person will publish it.
The question is would this work? I know there might be obstacles like "getting into others undocumented work" or "what if someone steals the map" e t c. But with the right setup of people I think that maybe this could work.
Would anyone of you fellows be interested in a project like this?
You may aswell completly down-rank this idea, feel free to critisise!
"un cadavre exquis"... that's what it's called for the drawing kind (fold up (hide) a drawing with multiple artists leaving only a small piece apparent when done.. with varying results
it's a good idea, but mapmakers are notoriously difficult to make play nice together...
for instance, in a sandbox, mapmakers would empty the contents of all the sand in their pockets before long.. in preparation
I can see what you mean, but can't this be supervised by the community somehow? So that if one of us steals the map she/he is likely to get penalized in some way?
Not trying to brag or anything but- I'm fairly good with the editor. But when I see other peoples maps I cant always see how it works, and it takes I while to figure everything out. Also, somebody can just steal the map and not send it to the next person. If you CLEARLY defined exactly what needed to be programmed before starting the map (so that people would not have a lot of options when it comes to what they would deviate from the plan) it might work.
edit
As for the community monitoring us- probably not. And it doesn't really matter because you can still steal it and nobody from the site can stop you. Even if they ban your account you can just make a new one and they would have no idea its you...Dont count on the community to do more than say 'shame on you, you map stealing loser!'.
The other issue is people are incredibly unreliable- The general public is fairly....(whats a nice word for "absolute idiots"). And you cant count on anybody. People would be saying "oh I forgot to do the work, I forgot to email it, oops I deleted the file, sold my computer, got a virus , I have no interet, something more important came up, bla bla bla" all the time.

Yes I know. "People = Shit", which to an extent is true. And I doubt that this would work very good but still I'd like to believe that its possible under right circumstances.
As far as I can tell, map makers work alone. There could be a team of map makers, but each one of them have a different map to do. They do not share the making of a map so that one will do heights, one will place doodads, and so on... That's pretty much the same for any artist, they hardly share the work because they're all "specialists" in their own way. I can't tell the reason for sure, but I think it has to do with the fact that it's easier for a map maker to know every aspect of its map, so that it will be of the best quality possible in the end.
Doing a map as a team, we would have to wait for the other mappers to complete their part before making any further progress... which is kind of annoying. The experience level is also important, I'm pretty sure mixing young mappers and pros will give something that isn't really, let's say, homogeneous.
Knowing that, we still could do a project together... Something like a "SC2Mapster single player campaign" where each member wishing to join the project will have to do his map from A to Z, following a storyline we all agreed for... :)
i never meant that "stealing sand" business as "my" major concern
i thought you were talking about an experiment, not a way to churn out a map... or a campaign.
the first is interesting to me, i'm doubtful for the latter. i don't think people are as bad as all that though, some should not to be have been relied on, but that's always the case when you entrust something you care about (have invested in) to someone.. it's a good thing to trust, just not something that works every time.
@onisagi (below): +1, much better wording than i did
sounds fun... as long as people don't take it overly serious. I mean people that do the data/trigger exercises already share their maps here for all to look at.
The main idea is the effort is minor, and nothing compared to a "pet project".
A troll stealing the map and publishing it, wont get very far in that venture. They're just gonna waste their battle.net space and get maybe 10 seconds of "haha" and then back to being a failure at life. The whole community knows where the maps comes from originally, so there's no point...
Just make sure everyone goes into working on this map knowing that the source code is open to public. The risk of being stolen comes 2nd to the usefulness it could be as an educational tool.

I think it could be loads of fun though.

Yes that's what I think too Zelda, with the right preparations it actually could work. And maybe we could get a decent map in "no-time" right?
oh! Like it! Lets make a new game!
What theme should it be............
What a second....... wasn't someone talking about young people "getting in over their heads" I shall head their advise.
