That's the same kind of absurd rationalization that Americans use far too often. Its the same as saying that its poor people's fault that they are poor. You call me naive? I call you an ignorant asshole.
Your overall attitude to this situation makes me less sympathetic. I'm sorry your map got stolen, but seriously, grow up.
Did the guy really steal your map or was it that he just wanted to play it online or distribute it, so he published it on his BNET account?
Because hosting a map in stead of its creator on BNET doesn't seem like much of an issue. But then if he did that wouldn't your name still appear on the map list? If it doesn't, then it might be an oversight on Blizzard's part when they made this map publishing system.
And guys, please, try not to jump the gun and judge the poor guy and insult him.
"Hey I got hit by a car"
"You're an idiot then! Why didn't you watch the road?"
"I did, you retard, but I couldn't expect a guy's car to have an issue and start rolling, dumbass"
"oh take some responsibility"
This is the kind of issue I'm talking about. You don't know exactly what happened, stop assuming that the other guy is immediately an idiot or whatever, and don't let anger get the best of you.
BTW, Galois, I agree that just running here for help and asking US to do something is not necessarily going to help you. I guess if you had asked nicely for help ("Hey, can someone help me figure out what to do, please?"), it wouldn't have angered some people here.
I myself at one point submitted a mod in the Maps section and it was removed for a reason that wasn't logical (I had no image to show, but it was a mod and the project was in planning stages), so instead of insulting the guy who deleted it and getting angry, I assumed I must've done something wrong or didn't correctly understand something (or possibly the guy who deleted it), so I asked nicely on the report if what I did was ok and explained this situation and asked what I could do instead. I was told to post it in the assets section and it was all fine and dandy afterwards. Now had I incorrectly reacted to this and said something like "why the f did you m's delete this for this reason? It makes no f-ing sense!", that, would've not been helpful at all and may have ruined someone's mood. Both I and the moderator would be in a bad mood and both of us would gain nothing. Rather than assuming the other is clueless about everything, try and see what went wrong. Did you do something wrong? Or did he do something wrong? Two people don't see things or understand them the same way, nor do they think the same way.

i dont think the guy just published it for him unless when u publish, sc2 changes the authors' name ingame too which i doubt, since he said he played the game too and there were some stuff that was edited
There are a few things I find peculiar about this incident..
1. There is only one Turret Defense 2010 sc2 release edition on Battle.net posted by nethao. If it had in fact been stolen would there not be two separate entities? But they don't show up
2. With the current publishing and custom system.. how does a copycat duplicate the success of the original? Shouldn't the copycats video be among the masses of unpopular maps? When a map is super popular, (in this case in the top 12) In my understanding its kind of impossible for some content stealer to outmatch the original video.
Compare it to youtube.. There are tons of David after Dentist clone Videos but no one could possibly steal the OP's fame because its stuck at the top... Now, If an unknown video is copied and then goes viral without credible links to the OP its completely possible and happens all the time..
Kinda makes me think something else happened here. Possibly a glitch in the system or an exploit?
Regardless of whether the map was locked or not, map stealing is unforgivable. Blizzard needs some kind of policy on things like this: Back in Wc3, map-sharing sites would gladly pull stolen content. Now that Blizzard has the maps should the responsibility fall to them?
hey bra, im an american and im going to help you out. im going to do to him what he did to you. ill publish the map under MY name. thatll get him right? and you spoke poorly of us americans.... we got your back!!!
If you're going to flame instead of answering the question "Did you lock
your map?" then I believe the implied answer is "No, I am a twat and did
not lock my map".
Show some dignity; act like an adult.
Don't give me that bullshit
When I finished making this map, the editor didn't have the lock ability released yet. That's right, I finished making this map long before the custom maps were enabled by Blizzard. If you had looked at the Teamliquid thread I linked to as proof int he original post, you'd see me explain how they can play custom maps without Blizzard's enabling of it. That's why it was #2 for the first week when custom maps were released in the beta.
So no, it wasn't fucking locked because it wasn't available at the time. And yes, someone did upload it after the custom maps were released because I didn't (the map was done), however my name was still on it. I didn't say anything then because as I said a few posts ago the only thing htat I am pissed off about is that my name has been completely wiped from the map altogether!
Why publish the map as open source without any disclaimers unless you
want people to modify and use your map for their own purpose?
Once again, the only thing I am pissed off about is that my name was taken off of it! Even I have had the decency in all of my SC2 remakes of BW classics to check for the name of the earliest mapmaker that I could find so that I could give credit! I don't care if people edit or remake. I care that credit is given where it is due, and here it was not.
That is the issue here. That is why it is being stolen.
That's all cool, but you're argueing a moot point. Most of us care that credit is given where it's due. That's not the discussion. Your map was stolen and you're looking for advice on what to do. We're trying to give advice. You're calling us idiots and assholes for not whining alongside you about how horrible this is. That's not a good way to get help.
In other words: Yes, it is horrible that someone stole your map! Now, did this help you in any way? No.
Still though, your loss. All I've been trying to do so far is figure out a way to help you, but frankly, by now, I really couldn't care less about your map being stolen. I do hope you realize that even when you post a witty comeback about how horrible I am, this still hasn't taken you a step closer towards a solution. I'm through with it. Sux2bu, frankly.

If so it is an infringement, not theft.
Regardless of that, if you release something as open source it is easy for people to think it is part of the public domain and as such can be used in any way they please.
Sure, it sucks and is indecent that they don't leave credit where credit is due but one can't expect random people on the Internet to be decent. If you do, you will sadly always end up very disappointed.
It is quite ironic that you are complaining about this when you yourself have been posting guides and programs on how to crack / modify Starcraft 2, a much worse behavior by any means.
Locking or not, you can still report a plaguerized map to Blizzard and have them deal with it. That's why Bnet 2.0 has all maps hosted by Blizzard in the first place, so they have full control over situations like this. Requiring to lock a map is not a necessity for this kind of situation unless Blizzard themselves say it's a necessity. Its simply a precaution, like locking your car. If your car gets stolen because you didn't lock your car it doesn't mean the cops will do nothing to help you get it back.

Even with public domain works it is obvious that you cannot simply mis-attribute the work to yourself. Furthermore, if an author attaches their name/pseudonym to a work, they do not need to attach any specific notice, they have intrinsic copyright rights. The fact that it is easy for ignorant people to ignore the law should not be a factor.
On another note, It is disturbing to me that so many people are harping about map-locking, for a couple reasons:
1) it has never done anything to stop riggers/map stealers.
2) it HAS done plenty to stop legitimate modders and new mappers looking to learn from others' work.
Please don't blame open-source authors for having their work stolen. Galois1, you absolutely need to contact Blizzard and protect your rights under copyright law. Perhaps you should send a DMCA takedown notice for the infringing map?
And, about the infighting in this thread, please remember that someone who has just been trampled upon like Galois is probably not in the best of moods. It would be considerate to treat such cases with kid-gloves and be a little understanding of crabbiness.

The name displayed on Battle.net is the account which uploaded it, not the author you set in Map Info

The one that uploads first generally has a higher popularity. The creator might not have uploaded early enough for SC2 Release.
The names in the loading screen and in-game messages were edited so that's a clear intent of stealing.
Yep, and you would know. I recall during beta your map being stolen and upload by some annoying and persistent people.
Why publish the map as open source without any disclaimers unless you want people to modify and use your map for their own purpose?

I just went from somewhat sympathetic to "sucks to be you" due to that statement
1) This map is really great.
2) The maker of a map deserves credit, even if it isn't really great.
3) Rude posts (by everyone) are best kept on some other forum. SC2mapster has a different kind of forum/community.
4) I will never play a map that I know was stolen, no matter how good it is, so long as the author has the intention of releasing it.
Don't give me that bullshit
