Basically what I wanted is a set of objectives. Let's say 3 primary objectives, and you do them one at the time. Each time you finish an objective you unlock a larger portion of the map, which also unlocks tech units. So the first area of the map... maybe a Terran AI that plays heavily on siege tanks which you don't have. So you have to destroy their base and then unlock the siege tech, some upgrades and perhaps some other units. That way I avoid the problem of having people spam up Carriers or BCs etc. It's more or less a 2 player melee map with challenging AI and a set of objectives.
Like you guys said, the problem is making the map fun AND balanced. A lot of the times I've encountered something is balanced but just annoying.
If you want to make a good Co-Op campaign you have to make it innovative. Like one person has a base that is under attack and has to defend, while the other guy has only a few units and needs to destroy key points, or even 2 players against each other. A normal 2 player campaign is sort of boring, you have to make it innovative.
There are a lot of co op missions, that the PR for them is not working so well or that the sheer amount of "blizz patching" made it harder is irrelevant to people who are trying their darnest to produce / improve them.
Blizz did a lobby for them (while multiplayer got the bin :( ) .. sad panda for multiplayer, but hourray for mapmakers, no? :keepo:
.. What defines co op? Do users have control over when/with who they ally / break alliance when it suits them or the game script?
I would consider that anything goes as long as it is multiplayer ...
I think the future of rts is multiplayer user vs user vs map author AIs! <3
you can try my map Planetary Cleaninig Service, i might do a whole co-op campaign in this style (changing some game mechanics but basically like that) following a new guy starting at a cleaning company which has to clean the mess which general maskedImposter left behind.

Co-op Campaign Maps yes. You have my vote.
Co-op missions sound fun to make but hard to balance test.
