I'm not sure where I stand about reputation, badges, and such. I agree it can become a problem, but then again, as a Starcraft Wikia contributor, I think a simple badge/points system can actually mean something. In the wikia it is fairly easy to identify bad/troll edits on pages because they always come from unregistered users or users with very few badges/points. If one day you see a troll edit from PsiSeveredHead on a wikia page... well its time to close the wikia because something is very wrong.
Such a system wouldn't be much more complex than mapster's reputation system, and in a sense it would be better, since its not related to people liking each other's posts. It would also be a guideline to those seeking help. Let's say I have a trigger problem, and some people post in my thread. I can easily identify the ones good with triggers because they have trigger badges (this is just an idea).
One way to avoid the e-peen/begging problem is to hide those badges. Don't show them next to the avatar image in every post but make them visible in a profile page.
