I'm not sure copy-pasting DotA 1 w/ updated art, UI, and steam integration really counts as "creating" anything. Personally I think it'd be scary if game companies all just started doing HD remakes of old, successful games. I'd much rather they keep taking risks and making new things, even if they fail and piss us off sometimes.
@OP: It might not be the most active community, but as you're seeing here you do get quick responses from very smart people (assuming the answer hasn't already been posted, which is rare). Mapster's an awesome resource when you're trying to figure stuff out in the editor.
Is DotA 2 even officially released yet? I can't keep track with the century-lasting beta. Even so, MOBA's are kind of in a separate league of their own. There's quite few complaints about League of Legends as well, for example, but to me it doesn't feel like it's on par with other big-time hyped releases like SC2, HotS, Simcity and whatever else is out there.
Nope, still in beta. I have a few keys if anyone wants access - of course, pretty much anyone with a Steam account and a few friends will be able to get a key quite easily :P
As a simple anecdote, I have seen a steady rise in activity involving Xeno Crisis since the release of HotS. So maybe the release is not as bad as some folks think. Maybe some of those ladder types are beginning to check out the revamped Arcade section a little more.
Last time I checked, it was not officially released yet. Also, from what I hear, the game should be free to play on release, but you can currently pay for early access, or get a key somewhere. Valve is also giving out keys like crazy, no idea where to even put mine (I think I am at 42 now).
I am pretty sure, they announced, that the game is not in beta anymore, though, so no idea what the current status would be.
I'm not sure copy-pasting DotA 1 w/ updated art, UI, and steam integration really counts as "creating" anything.
Yeah, sure, they didn't create anything new in terms of gameplay, however that is exactly what they announced early on: A dota version on an independant platform without the limitations of the WC3 engine. And not a bad one, imo. The gameplay itself is hardly different, but most basic things missing in the WC3 version were implemented (matchmaking, fully integrated bots etc), very nice spectator support with unlimited spectators per game, selectable commentary audio, directed or free camera and if they implement all the features they planned to smooth the entry barrier and to support good manners, Dota 2 could become a really great game.
I have to say, so far Valve has done a good job with Dota 2, in my opinion.
I've been in "Hiveworkshop" since 2004 (or 2005), now the place is a joke. Throughout the years the place has always had lots of resources. Always, and was very active, and to some extent it still is... in war3 (where no one else plays their projects and games and no one outside their community cares about these project).
The reason why you don't see lots of resources is definitely from the much harder way to create models and mostly to export them, requires 3ds max that anyone does not possess and even pirating may not be worth it. Also Blender is horrible to use, SC2Tools came late - pretty much the reasons why you have not been seeing endless amount of SC2 models.
What I really like in Mapster and I do not want to see unlike THW, is the lack of forums for complete troll threads, posts and various spam 1000 pictures on the thread, make it PRO site compared to THW. In other words, the lack of too shiny things (such as gems for reptuation, Omg he's a Moderator woooooow!!!!, Omg ADMIn!!!!!!' and various other things) truly allow you to focus more on the Mapmaking than making troll threads and posting crap in offtopic threads - well if you guys call your offtopics crap here, you have to see what crap means in THW. It's like full of tards there...
But SC2 Mapster could use better skin, some better forum coding and such, however like I said, the basic-ness of the forum allow you to focus on mapmaking stuff and not some retarded threads, so to me SC2Mapster is quite PRO. And also - very active, plus, I can now say models are still a lot.
Not as many as there were in war3 but with things getting harder, naturally models would be less.
Oh and yeah although I never stay at TeamLiquid.net - you see the fact that the forum doesn't have shiny sigs where your signature can take the whole page, some gems and stuff, make it the same - a place not for kids to have fun with such shiny things... and I see SC2Mapster as the mapmaking equivalent of TL.net, while TL. is let's say for esports.
I have to say, so far Valve has done a good job with Dota 2, in my opinion.
Yeah, I don't disagree. For what they set out to accomplish I think they're doing really well.
My point was more in response to the comparison between that and "creating" a new game and trying new things. I think when you try to make something new, and in particular when you're continuing a really popular series in a new direction, there are big risks that go with that. Then you get people who don't like the changes, and they're really upset, and even if some of that backlash is justified I'd hate to see it scare developers (or publishers) into trying fewer new things.
Honestly, the sc2 mapping scene is pretty small. It had a really rocky start and is getting better, but I would say we're certainly the best community out there, at least compared to any other English-speaking ones. The people here will so frequently go above and beyond what you'd see at any other forum, really trying to help teach the tool. We may not have the numbers of say, the hive workshop, but because we're relatively small we've got some awesome, very dedicated, people. If you want quicker interaction, you can try our free IRC chat here.
also is dr super good and dr super evil the same guy?
Haha I asked DSG the same, DSG said I should've recognized they were different by the way they answer... I would've pulled DSG here cause really, why stay at a place that's NOT made for SC2 i.e THW cause nobody pays attention if you did anything, they'd even hate and frown it for taking the attention away FROM WC3... but it's his choice afterall if he likes using that place for sc2...
After 3 years the art tools haven't been released and blizzard has not given any information about the m3 file format (?) which the developers of the blender m3-addon might need.
It seems like blizzard is not very interested in the custom map scene although there are planning a map market to make some profit. blizzard didn't support the mapping scene of wc3 as well, but things were easier.
Don't give him a hard time, maybe he's been living under a rock the whole three years and doesn't realize that the custom map scene is different from what it was at the start of SC2.
Speaking of which is there a place to apply for the art tools in European forum? I don't play US and no reason to create a character there, have to think of a name, etc >_<
This community can be hard to break into since it is so quiet. Less activity means less tutorials, less comprehensive knowledge. I'm amazed by what this site has to offer in that regard already.
When I first started posting, I got the help I needed, albeit curt and minimal, but as I've been around longer and learned to exercise a little patience, I've had help that goes above and beyond what would be expected from simple forum/IRC interactions. I very much appreciate that in this community because I'd have been completely stuck without it.
This site contains so many tutorials and so much knowledge because it was mostly gathered and structured by many experienced WC3 and BW mappers who tried to make the switch during the beta and the first months after release. Then the scene died due to the custom games system and lack of social interactions on Battle.net. Remember, SC2 launched without chat channels and the arcade, Up and Coming didn't even exist, it was just a list of the most popular maps.....
This is also why many tutorials and guides really aren't up to date, there just isn't enough people to update them or write new ones, and the original creators are long gone.
That's one thing that bugs me - most of the tutorials that are 2010 / 2011 are sort of incorrect, some simply by placement of buttons moved and others by the button turned into another or meshed with another because of various reasons, and it can make it hard to follow a tutorial to the letter if you have to half skip a part, y'know?

The recent 1.5 patch changed a lot of stuff, and we realize that many tutorials are now out of date, even if they're just a little bit off.
We're currently working on something pretty neat for the website, and part of that involves us correcting outdated information to make sure it's up to date. You'll likely hear more about SoonTM ^.^

I'm quite enjoying natural selection 2.
I love NS2. Their last update finally made it able to run on my PC but I haven't had time to play it much yet.

The blender addon is pretty good actually. It's far from perfect but it sure isn't crap.
On a side note having been around several other sites this one is definitely the best and most active.

The galaxy editor is more complex than the world editor but there's almost no documentation or help provided by blizzard.

I think literally everything in that post was wrong.
There's various Blizzard tutorials, the art tools are in beta and Blizz is and has been actively revamping the arcade.
Maybe you being tired of the dark SC2 sci-fi-look is correct.
