This is not meant to include your own time spent on the map. Mapmaking is a time liability but it's misleading to assume each hour of mapmaking is $15-$25 of lost wages.
Agreed. Time spent on mod making is not proportional to a standard day job, unless you have a sponsor or company officially backing you up to do it. You can't throw away theoretical money if you're not being paid for what you do.
I've fortunately been making money providing models, but overall with the time I spend making models that aren't for money, it would be a loss. I don't count it as a loss though, since the time spent is on a hobby, not for business.
can't wait to see the rules for the market. if it stays at: you are not allowed to use assests made by blizz, i doubt there will be much maps. only very fw people have the time to create their own models and textures
poll: a second starcraft (us version) is the only thing i ever invested
Well opportunity cost is a big investment, the standard award wage is working at a supermarket to put it into perspective. I made the choice to take a year off to create Tofu, so indeed I did loose a lot of money that I could have earnt and it was completely real. Ie, it is money I do not have in my pocket now.
As for actual spent costs, it is hard to judge as what was required for the map to be created, no doubt I bought a new computer just for Sc2 so I could make maps, but no doubt I use it for other things, like watching movies and doing other work. So where shall I split the money? So if we leave out the computer, the actual cost of things _needed_ which I already did not have (ie I already had Photoshop), will sit at perhaps 1,000-1,500 when it is released.
But Tofu is not your standard project, we have invested a lot more time and money into it than most would, and I believe it shows this for itself at the current beta stage. For instance, I like the UI of Tofu alot better than Dota 2, and I am just some stupid kid sitting in Australia with Photoshop, and Valve is a multi-million dollar corporation which has invested millions into the design of Dota 2 ... at the end of the day money doesn't really mean anything, nor does design skills, ie, Minecraft. It is creating something fun that can be enjoyed by a group of people, that is why we map.
