It is the art, that is how they get you. They own the art (Models/Textures) of the game, by posting a video you are making a derivitive work, which is how they can hold it on copyright grounds. It has nothing to do with the name etc ... anyone could potentially go trademark World of Starcraft today and if it wasn't already trademarked, then even with all of Blizzard/Activison's money and power, I doubt they would be successful at getting it revoked, simply because if you have that much money and you wanted the name, you should have trademarked it earlier.
You are living my dream mate. Everything I do in the SC2 editor is simply to get noticed by a gaming company, such as Riot, Valve or Blizzard itself and make it as a game designer, this is simply because of one moment in time - back in late 2004 I gave Icefrog a Dota-like map engine, regardless how much my map sucked - it was the ideas behind the engine that were important - he used those ideas to further Dota along and now he is cashing in on it.
There are many people like me that contributed to Dota over the years, and are missing out. Why should Icefrog get all the cash? All he was ever truly good at was seeing the potential in other people's work, and piecing it together like a jigsaw puzzle. Dota is merely a collection of derivitive works, nothing more ... Icefrog has never once been a good designer nor has he ever been transparent about anything ... this is a bad thing.
I really hope that things will work out, the game looks so awesome, even Blizzard didn't believe it was created with their own editor, that must mean something :P
Anyway if you need anything, just ANYTHING, Personally I can say I'll try my best to help you.
It looks amazing, really... but why do you call it an MMO? Was diablo 2 called an MMO?
Your UI needs more work - eye candy wise -. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to help you with that though, there are plenty of talented artists on here.
Also, please please please scale that gigantic spell bar down. I simply dont see any advantages on having it that big.
I really hope world of starcraft is a placeholder. Not only is it totaly unoriginal, but there are so many other cool names that you can come up with... (ie: Starcraft Galaxies) (edit: just saw the part on your forums where you talk about wanting to the change the name, I apologize - Yes, Starcraft Universe would be awesome)
EDIT: While I'm sure you're a very talented and hardworking person (look at how many modders have canceled their projects - I include myself here), it really looks like a publicity stunt from RIOT. To be fair, it's not like you had invented a new game or reinvented the genre. Still, big congratulation from me! You can't imagine how many people must envy you right now, it's a chance of a lifetime.. don't let it go!
I really hope world of starcraft is a placeholder. Not only is it totaly unoriginal, but there are so many other cool names that you could come out with... (ie: Starcraft galaxies, etc)
Seeing as how Blizzard just stated on Gamasutra that they invited him over to Irvine, I'd say yes.
Also, if you go over there, please take a list of all the fucking stupid shit we're annoyed with in SC2 and put it on Mike's table. And tell him I need a job.
It's less about "being amazed" and more about "trying to turn bad PR into good PR" :D Blizz failed, now they gotta pull their wagon out of the mud. And Ryan gets the reward for them having to - which is perfectly fine by me ^^
yeah...bit PR mistake for blizzard. "oh quick lets sue that guy using the mod tool we gave him without properly investigating first!"
Its in blizzards best interest to have great custom maps. It helps their game, and since they won't work without sc2 its not like we can make any kind of competition.
While I know your being sarcastic. I would rather create unique styles of gameplay than copying someone elses work. It's more fun making your own stuff anyway!
LOL, no one is trying to sue me... the rumors I've been hearing are nuts.
I really appriciate all the kind comments but what really blows me away is that I'm not even close to being happy with the way the UI was. Not only the action bar half done but the minimap, lolz. Not even close to looking good. And all the player HP bars showing without those players in the game. It was a pre-alpha. I thought it would get maybe 50k views over a few months. Only reason I put it up was to get forum feedback from you guys... and some of you guys ripped me apart LOL.
Evilyn :"THAT UI IS HORRENDOUS".
I really think what sold the general public was the custom lighting, fog, and the Tal'Darim Dark Protoss, which alot of people dont see up close. They look badass. I'm definately not the most skilled modder here when it comes to technical stuff. I remember when Progammer walked me through a variable like a baby once.
But I do know how to make 3D space look good and terrain like a pro. I'm pretty sure that had a lot to do with it going viral.
I don't deserve to work at Riot for the WoSC video. But I do deserve to work SOMEWHERE for this:
What I think is that news sites failed for not checking sources, and Blizzard failed for shooting first and asking later. They should have contacted him before removing his videos.
At least, they explained themselves, and Creation got a "small" prize :P (I hope you don't waste the opportunity :)).
The lesson?
Imma name all my maps World of StarCraft to get a job asap. True story xDDD.
Also, if you go over there, please take a list of all the fucking stupid
shit we're annoyed with in SC2 and put it on Mike's table.
1000 times this. If you really want to say "thanks" to SC2Mapster, bring our concerns to their face. As previous times have demonstrated, sometimes they don't know what our worries are, so giving a list of Bnet-fails to Morhaime could speed up their fixing.
We could make some thread and compile everything in an ordered manner, with points and subsections, the more professional we're able to
And yes, I'm being serious. Only need Creation's approval.

If Blizzard doesn't allow you to call it "World of Starcraft," try naming it "Word of Starcraft"
You can't blame the readers, you have to blame the writers.
I blame you for writing that.

This is the world of mod making ...
Go for it mate, never forget who you are.

Star Wars Galaxies anyone?
Really can't tell if you're being serious here.
Blizzard was stupid for that.... >.<
Are you going to continue the project?
Seeing as how Blizzard just stated on Gamasutra that they invited him over to Irvine, I'd say yes.

@Gorandor: Go
I feel jealous. My dream was to always create something that would amaze someone. :( I feel depressed! Good job Ryan!

Don't you know it's the new trend to copy softwares/games and slap a different interface to it for max dollarz
Why innovate when you can copy and make as much $$ ? derp

@Creation25
You are absolutely welcome for the assistance Ryan, and I wish you the best of luck if you take the Riot games opportunity.
Keep up the great work and I will no doubt be around to lend a hand on IRC :3

Stupid noob dialog setup though...
yeah thats pretty awesome and it has only 2k views:D
Seems like I have to find an awesome name for my maps and change it a big before uploading it.D
Nice FF fight simulation...... your right about your WoSC its not impressive but that video looks pretty sweet
