I don't think first maps must be popular, I think they must be "good for becoming popular", that is, once we bump it, it stays at top.
then surely battle planets is a terrible choice. i think the game is great, but we've been showed time and time again that the tops maps are about play time. there is no way i could spend an hour playing battle planets, but shove me into an element TD and the time flies by.
i think unfortunately it's a catch 22, you are right to say this is about getting maps to the top that are not popular, but to give it an initial boost, you need to pick a map capable of gaining first page. i dont see how it's possible with a round based 'mini-game' like battle planets?
i think personally battle planets is be a perfect candidate for after MOTW is on page 1 to test to see if swapping it for a mini-game map ruins it's popularity?
well, i guess battle planets is just a mini game... why do people vote for these things? everyone change your votes NOW
:::::: first i was against battle planets, then i tolerated it, then i supported it, and this page has thrown me totally against it.... screw it just revote for something better seriously!
Oh my god of COURSE that is a goal of this project! It just isn't what you should be thinking about at the moment. That is what is going to screw the entire project over, that kind of thinking. Everyone, not just you needs to realize that we need to think from a business perspective. We can throw morals into the mix later.
I could be wrong, but I foresee the map dropping in popularity as soon as we throw a mini-game into the mix. Starting out with a mini-game is just doomed to fail. We need a full on game, something that could almost stand by itself. Something with a ton of replayability. Something that people KNOW is good.
If it is a game that is already popular, obviously the maker would have to agree to take the original off and then publish on MOTW.
But yeah, getting to page 1 is the number 1 goal ATM, and if you disagree, you are kidding yourself.
REVOTE? YES!!!! this is our chance to not screw ourselves!!! after being weaned to the idea, i agree with taco and we need to at LEAST get a map that's good... i've been holding this back for the sake of sounding nice, but battle planets IS NOT THAT GREAT... in fact i hate it...
it has simply too many balls (cough) spheres (cough) testicles (cough cough cough cough COUGH... [roll over and die of TB])
then surely battle planets is a terrible choice. i think the game is great, but we've been showed time and time again that the tops maps are about play time. there is no way i could spend an hour playing battle planets, but shove me into an element TD and the time flies by.
Don't say that, or colors will come and say something like this:
It's obvious to me that you haven't actually given my map a shot. Your posts as of late haven't been very impressive.
Battle planets was fun. For one game. My map of choice is prisoner rebellion, or death haven, but OneTwo already gave a lame excuse. I've used up all of my 30 bookmarks on starcraft, and the're all good maps. The'res 30 good maps right there.
BTW "Tree Tag Alpha" is gonna be the next big map.......
Another revote? Really???
It seems like exactly what I imagined is happening... making new polls until something other than battle planets comes out on top...
This is seriously ridiculous now.
I would have been okay with almost every other map as well... but not in this way.
fine WE ALL WANT OTHER MAPS THAN BATTLE PLANETS AND I FINALLY REALIZE IT
i hate that map... and I HAVE played it and it's a bad choice
the simple point is that everyone who voted for it doesn't know what they're talking about and will be destroying the project with their votes
EDIT: i personally think that we need a better voting system, because battle planets shouldn't have turned up as #1 on the first poll, but i have no clue as to what we could do besides lynch our voters until they say the right thing. This isn't about denying the voters, but the simple truth is that battle planets CANNOT succeed.
sure it's fun and games until two planets rub past each other... then its WAAAAAY outta da locker galaxy for me!
The name is always going to be "Map of the Week" and the mode will always be custom. We shouldn't have a problem there.
EDIT: I personally changed the poll to remove the "Rodrigo is Flaming" option. If many of you had been more mature, there would have been no reason to make a new poll.
And also, the options in the last thread were misleading, and the poll was rushed. This whole process is being rushed. If it is to be done, it should be done right.
I would have been okay with almost every other map as well...
Bad. NO. Wrong. Stop.
The first map is the most important. If we mess up here, the entire project fails. First impressions are SO important. Someone plays the map once and don't like it, it will forever be marked as a bad map in that player's eyes. The first map MUST be good, or, as I have said before, the project will fail.
It just so happens that all the "good" maps are already considered somewhat popular. I put quotes in () because I know that there are some great maps out there that are not, but just not enough. It would be best to pick a map that is sure to succeed. We should take no chances.
You know why I said that? Because it's not up to me to decide which maps are good and which aren't... and it isn't up to you either.
There were two polls where the majority clearly considered battle planets as a good enough map. If the majority chose another map, it should have been that. But how can you seriously say battle planets would be a bad map if most people here think otherwise? If it would be full of bugs it would be a different story, but it's just your dislike of the map.
I thought this was a good project and I wanted to support it as well as getting other people to support it, but I now see that it's hypocritical. You don't want to help mapmakers to get their map popular enough to get recognised, you want to brag about whatever you can "accomplish" with mapping or sth like that, in the best case with your own map. You already lost momentum, with things like that you will just kill this project no matter what map you choose in the end. Have fun trying nonetheless.
TacoManStan: For those of you who witnessed the "event" that went down here, you will know what this means :D
It is being kept for symbolic purposes, and because it is just plain awesome. :D (For those who didn't witness the "event", I kinda started an argument that completely derailed the thread, which I deleted)
I think it can succeed (Battle Planets). I have a lot of fun playing it (for example with xSun and qraze) and it is a map that we can play again and again. We even had a little tournament with quite some people. When the mafia channel wasn't dead there were constantly people asking to play it again. So I think it can be popular, it just needs every boost it can get. And there isn't a better contender for motw at the moment.
And yes, I also tried or at the very least looked at the threads for the other maps.
the first map does have to be good, and i will simply state my arguments against battle planets and where i believe it fails to meet this requirement. I find that the game is too short, and that it does not contain enough variability in its gameplay to be played lots of times over. It is fun, but it can't compare to some of the other maps out there... I will admit that it kicks both of my maps in the rear, but have you ever played banana cheaters, catalyst, something more complicated? The fact that desert strike used to be the most popular NA map shows me that a map requires some level of realism or combat. Planets orbiting around and shooting lasers is rather, childish. I'll wrap it up with the fact that it has no storyline either. Is it well made? Yes! Was much time spent on it? YES! Were the custom models impressive? YES YES YES... but the concept fails to feed the gamer's interest.
I am not going to respond to that... For, uh, various reasons, I deleted the last poll and started a new one. I had a suspicion that the poll had been tampered with. (I am still not convinced that it wasn't, directly or indirectly).
Besides, once these things get rolling, it is very easy to pick the winner, to be a "fair weather" voter. Resetting the poll is actually the best way to get accurate information.
Oh and one more thing, this poll means nothing. It is just to get a general idea of what is going to happen. The finals decision will be up to Rodrigo, the publishers, and the mods. (Not to mention the opinions of this site are not always... particularly valid)
The poll was enough to get the entire thread to talk about my map. Though I agree, its up to Rodrigo and the others. I really hope this whole program works out anyway, regardless if my map is chosen. It's the best thing we can do for authors that tons of hard work into their maps, yet are unrewarded by Blizzard's current system.

If they don't put your map up I wouldn't let them use it. The community has decided that Battle Planets is worth being the map of the week.
