with patch 3.8, it will be possible to buy ingame goodies for carbot's starcrafts.
what do we think about it? is it 3 years too late? what do you expect next?

Just to be sure, by that you mean portraits and emoticons and not acual monetezation for carbot's starcrafts arcade mod, right?
Makes sense with their newly reworked "Collections" tab. Will be interesting to see where this goes next.
i would really like to know if there will be offical ways to become "partner" and how transparent that will be.
it's obvious that sc:universe and notd(2) would be next on the queue.
Its not personal monetizing of carbot. Simply they will sell some carbot themed portraits and emoticons as micro transaction. Its the same as the previous patch`s micro transactions. The game already have many carbot themed stuff in the game
Blizzard said earlier that they will work with individual developers. Carbot is kind of addicted, and brought something fresh and unique, so nothing new here.
What Funky is curious about i guess is Map Marketplace. I don't see this happening because of same reasons as years ago:
1) new patch might break maps and it will be Blizzard's responsibility because author may not be willing to provide a technical support for his map. And people wich bought some shit from marketplace will demand their money back in that case.
2) interest in sc2 mapmaking dimmed drasticaly over the years (from 2010). Now i see a 10-15 same people on this site and even lower amount is able/willing/have time to provide content. Editor design itself is a problem for bringing new casual mapmaker to the scene. It's a tool for Blizzard professionals which spend time in it to earn money.
3) Blizzard knows about p. 1) and 2) so they did a little experiment with release of war3 assets to see if fantasy setting could bring more mapmakers to the scene. It's not.
4) The top-down gameplay mechanics (stun, crit, damage taken, positioning, crowd control, etc) was already fully explored in Dota and basicaly Diablo 3. Next big revolution such as Dota ain't gonna happen. The lack of new ideas is real. We see that in Heroes of the Storm which is epic fail design-wise.
5) Some veterans from SC and Dota eventualy moved to Hearthstone, because it's simple, fun and doesn't require a lot of time to invest in. (lowering the sc player base)
i sadly completely disagree with your 4/ , permanent revolution is right here dude, you just in it and can't see it. Multiplayer RTS top down and quake gameplay can now cohabit.. Developers have barely scratched the surface of RTS games potential .. we are barely beginning its journey. The fact that there are less people involved in this particular outlet (bnet2°) is incidental.. overall the concept of rts is gaining so much ground within the "larger crowd" of gamers it is unheard of.
About your 2/.. sorry but you mistake "loss of players on a poorly designed game" with "loss of player interest in the type of game". The community has made better versions of sc2, these will be allowed to flourish online soon .. and yes the crowd might come and play them in droves (in a few years).. but that is not going to happen with what blizz is doing, it will happen thanks to more cunning (as in THE game available is good, not the s-hittiest version available that gets "changed / re changed for no apparent gains" that blizzard provides (its only advantage is the integrated ladder/matching opponents skill levels).
The thing that can happen to get passed the 1/ (updates breaking maps that have "sold" stuff to players etc) is separate engines, engines and servers dedicated to a particular mod/map. That will happen to any "successful map/mod, and that makes it "not worth it" for blizz unless the map has 100 000 people playing it.
The real kicker is we would pay to get that (dedicated server / engine) and then we could be "getting money back" from the gamers actually playing the game we made and continually nurse through blizzard's changes/other.
...
If it happened.. would you pay 25$ a month for a dedicated engine/server for your own map/map community..?
ps: the more things change the more they stay the same! hashtag rts forever
We have already bought SC 2, and the servers come with it for the maps of arcade I think. Soon you will say that we have to pay Blizzard developpers to work on the editor xD
Be sure to check out the extension mod: Hots Custom Map support on NA and EU, Despite the name it greatly expands the roster of options for the default 3 races and is updated all the way to NCO.
I see this as merely satisfying existing demand. Quite frankly, I believe Blizzard doesn't actually care about these features, but people have explicity demanded it, so it is being delivered. No sane company will turn down free money.
Is it possible they will monetize other content? Perhaps.
I see this as the final evolution of SC2 into the current market payment structure. SC2 will never be true F2P, but it isn't P2P either. It is now effectively sold in components so people can choose which features they want at price points that are accpetable, and with rough analogies to what those features and content cost.
The campaigns will always remain relatively more expensive, since they are the largest one time cost.
The melee 1v1 will command a price point to keep the game (relatively) free of trolling and botting (not hacking).
The Arcade and Custom maps are sandboxes, and as such are F2P. However, for the same above reasons and others, publishing capability will never be free. This is industry standard (every app store I'm aware of requires a license to publish, and Unity/Unreal also have fees/licensing, just more flexible).
These cosmetics will be the bottom part of the market, and although not mentioned in the 3.8 announcement, the revenue is being shared with Carbot (he confirmed this on reddit). Furthermore, the WCS portraits worked under a similar scheme, and the upcoming Warchests are effectively seasonal passes, akin to the DOTA 2 compendium.
Coop Commanders will always cost, because they do take time and effort to design, as well as produce unique assets/artwork for. Also the cost of the commanders is effectively covering any costs related to making mutators, making maps, and any feature additions (Mutators, Masteries, Custom Mutators, Leaderboards, etc.)
This was pretty much inevitable, nearly the entire software industry is moving towards this, because it more accurately reflects the fact that software has 0 marginal cost, it is entirely a capital investment, so these payment structures are not to pay for copies of software, but to reflect the cost of ongoing services of coders creating what the customer desires, no different then an accountant/lawyer/doctor, who is paid entirely for their service, not the end result (though some can choose to be paid according to the end result if they feel it will be advantageous).
When i heard blizzard will include microtransations i thought to myself: jeez this company will go down the greed road. But than after some thought i realized rts genre is not as popular and if these microtransation keep my gorgous sc2 game alive than so be it. Than they made co-op commanders pay u 5 dollars. First i thought it was criminal but without co-op starcraft would be less played. So i hope they keep this beloved game alive. A few more bucks into blizzard pocket i dont mind if they invest in more content.
I don't think that blizzard will ever try to sell maps made by the community, sorry to say it but most dont have blizz-like quality standards, or any standards.
If Blizzard happened to ever try it it would be the same that happened with Valve and the skyrim mod on the marketplace, on the other hand Valve added micro-transactions to the community content by the way of selling community skins or sets, on the side of the mapmakers a feature was added to buy a "subscription" to said map. The way things are done currently on Dota is that you can still play the map but you get extra features if you subscribe.
And while yes currently graphic designers might be the only ones to get a chance to sell something, we have to be understand first that if blizzard was to add some sort of marketplace or a way to submit stuff for the collection tab, they would need a team to just go trough the stuff and check that it's up to their standards before putting up anything.
This is just my opinion and it's based mostly on what i've seen and done on the Steam workshop for Dota on the past 3 years.

at this point i think carbots is already sponsored by blizz, so monetization will surely go more towards blizz than carbot
Go play Antioch Chronicles Remastered!
Also, coming soon, Antioch Episode 3: Thoughts in Chaos!
Dont like mapster's ugly white? Try Mapster's Classic Skin!

Well the parent company of blizzard did change hands. Microtransactions were inevitable.

As long as they don't go overboard with them then I don't see why not.
Anything is better than nothing at this point. On the plus side it'll keep Blizz focused on updating for SC2 for some time at least.
i would really like to know if there will be offical ways to become "partner" and how transparent that will be.

@Kloupz:
I doubt it, The entire point of arcade is to provide a free variety, you already need the game to use the editor.
Although, us being able to sell our own skin packs (with blizzard approval ofcourse) would be interesting...

They're portraits, decals and emoticons, mind. Carbot absolutely deserves to be the first for something like this.
Yes, and it is a good step. But this is a step for Graphic guys (or maybe a single one), not for map makers.
