I thought I hated the fantasy concept before I saw it. Now I hate it more. Someone explain to me the rationale behind asking SC map-makers to create WC maps? Is it just because of that WC mod? Booooo, I say. I get that WOW is super-popular. Hell, I don't even dislike the game, personally. I loved WC3 even. But half the heroes in HOTS are WC heroes. Fine. But now a WC theme for a SC map editor? Are you kidding me?
Agreed, I am on the dislike WC side of the fence for the most part. Besides Warcraft 1, I actually really liked that one. Is one of the large reasons I chose not to enter this time, I didn't want to pretend my map had anything to do with WC, as it really didn't.
However, all that aside, a big congrats to those in our community who made it into the top 10, like greythepirate, Bounty, and Keudeugi! Please show your support by taking the time to investigate the maps a bit, vote as you see fit :) I certainly plan to.
Yeah!! Big congrats. Lots of hardwork went into these maps! Looking forward to marathon playing them tomorrow night. Prizes are such a good motivation!!
I am really tired to see warcraft everywhere, but when i see a new map with WarCraft 3 assets i can't resist, i become like "WC3 <33333, Must play imediately!", if the map is done by Tya is even worse, his maps are too adicting :(
And btw we all know that WC3 > SC2, just like LotC > Star Wars
True. Last year people had a problem with maps that were very old being submitted, though. I guess declaring a fantasy theme is Blizzard's way of circumventing that.
I hope there is another contest, and I really hope we can just go crazy with the concepts. It's been a long time since I released Warships and I'm itching to justify spending a whole lot of time on the whole space battle theme that I grew up gaming with.
Why no Diablo heroes mr. Tya? It's still Fantasy... WHY!!!!
"Compete with Dota 2 custom" seriously? That custom with almost every game copy pasted from WarCraft 3 on a game copy pasted from WarCraft 3 ??? A game with no RTS engine? To me SC2 Custom maps are far better on every aspect, especially because i don't get diharrea by watching every single hero of the game... If Dota 2 Custom have more success of sc2 is because the game is played by way more people (mostly self called pros aka tryhard), and it needs the incredible amount of 4 finger and a half of brain to be played... Wow...
ps: Don't even try to tell me that Heroes of the Storm needs even less brain, i know it already
To all that made it congratulations I know now what I will be doing this weekend. Lots of hard work when in to this, but I hope Blizzard dosent have the $%^&*( again to ask for this Sh)(*&^%#@ again. In my brain it did not make sense to mix SC with WC back when it was announce and still to this date cant comprehend such. But the work that was put here and there on this maps was really amazing.
Truly, I could've spend more time on the gameplay and testing if it weren't for the fantasy theme requirement.
Between me having computer issues for most of the summer, and losing most of my data due to the 3.0 update, I only had six weeks to work on something - and I've spend most of the time just establishing the look and creating the terrain and game data. I had like 2 days left for actual game testing and emergency bug fixing.
It was a valuable game development lesson if nothing else. Still, other people managed to create some great maps, and I congratulate everyone of you for that!
Overall it was fun. But next time, please no more betatesting during the contest period ok Blizzard?
Huh. The picks didn't look to bad at first, but after playing them all I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. Some good maps like Death by Fantasy didn't make it, and some truly awful maps did. (Like Escort Ships)
Doesn't help that I usually disagree with their criteria to begin with. Most of the maps chosen are stale remakes of old maps or games, and mostly just seem to have been chosen because they're really, really, really simplistic and are "safe" choices for top 10 since the are proven concepts, changing little from what they were based off of.
Still, congratulations to the top 10!
Just remember, even if you lose out in the voting, if you got top 10 you got infinitely more for your work than the dozens of people who got shit-nothing for the hours of dedication. Be proud!
lol, a lot of the replies to this thread are "This contest was dumb and stupid with such a dumb theme, but congrats to you guys who made it to the top ten!"
One reason is because even if the contest is dumb, there's still a lot of $$$$$$ to be involved. Why wouldn't you congratulate them?
Secondly, a lot of these games, even if you think they are sub-par for the top 10 of the contest, would have been amazing in a different context. I don't want my opinion of the contest or their top 10 picks to take away from the fact that ALL of these maps took an insane amount of effort and whoever made them should be proud.
In general I think people are just trying not to ruin the joy of the people who made it to the top 10, which is a good thing.
(Although for the record, I liked the Fantasy theme)
Well the picks are about as expected, congrats to everyone who got into the Top 10. I must say though, Im surprised that the wolf vs sheep thing got in. Sure, its kinda fun, but its nothing special.
I always like to one-up myself so I'll try to be more concise about my last post or my communication.
There's nothing wrong with making games that are special, new, or very different. I'm sure the vast majority of players in the SC arcade would welcome these games. It's just the developers who go the 'special route' execute the learning phase for first time players or other aspects of gameplay very poorly.
This combined with the small time-frame for these contests which pressure developers to make simpler games than a bigger one which will be potentially far more buggy, unfinished, and not so fun.
Everything I've just said also combined with people's expectations and patience when approaching new games, naturally they go to what is easier to learn, play, and feels more immediately satisfying.
Perhaps if contests gave us much more time and flexibility we would see much more 'special' games make it to the top 10.
I encourage anyone to make 'special' games and I believe it's not impossible to get it to the top 10 of this very young and evolving RTC contest. It's just often much trickier and more difficult to make it appreciated or 'fun' for a wider audience than a much simpler and well understood game.
Don't be discouraged guys, there's plenty of ways to improve our games that we can start doing now!
EDIT: These RTC contests do pressure developers to make fun, easier to learn, and easier to play games, and more dense with fun and awesome which is kinda good. The problem is that it doesn't reward people who take more time and effort with their projects to achieve these same goals. There's only so many fun and simple games that can be made in a short time.
Uhm.. I was just making a statement, not sure what warranted this huge text wall. Did you make the sheep vs wolf game? I wasnt aware.
I'm not sure what part of what I said seemed like a personal attack because that wasn't my intention. I have no problem with you or any individual, or any group of people.
I'm highly critical of the contest itself and was just offering my own opinion and point of view in case that helps with understanding why things turned out the way they did, and possibly making it easier to make happen what we want to see.
I didn't make the sheep vs wolf game but I wasn't aware that only the top 10 contestants were allowed to have opinions and points of view about these contests.
If I'm attacking anything it's the contest, not you or Blizz, or me. Your opinions and statements are welcome. I was simply making comments and statements too on the topic of these RTC contests ;) .
Any individual opinion is kinda the least of our worries. It's the collective effort of Blizz making changes and us making better games that will create awesome results :)
I hope this has clarified potential miscommunication but if not I welcome you to ask more questions.
Jesus you need to chill out. Where in my previous post do you see any indication that I felt that you personally attacked me?
Imo, you need to read posts with a more positive attitude. Lets start right now. Lets look at my post again:
"Uhm.. I was just making a statement, not sure what warranted this huge text wall. Did you make the sheep vs wolf game? I wasnt aware."
According to your response, heres how you seemed to have interpreted my post (roughly):
"Im on the defensive and feel personally attacked. Have you created the sheep vs wolf game? No? Then you arent entitled to an opinion! Fuck off."
Heres how I actually meant it:
"I didnt want to start an argument and feel kinda confused that you took your time to write such an elaborate response to such a simply observation. Are you the creator of the sheep vs wolf game? If so, Im sorry if I offended you, I didnt mean to belittle your game."
With that in mind, heres my actual statement again:
"Uhm.. I was just making a statement, not sure what warranted this huge text wall. Did you make the sheep vs wolf game? I wasnt aware."
See? Not everything you read on the internet is meant to be hostile and its often a matter of perspective. From what I see when I roam around SC2mapsters, you seem to be getting into alot of internet arguments. That can have the negative side effect of assuming a hostile intention behind every post you read, even if there wasnt supposed to be one. This is potentially dangerous and can harm your personal life by conditioning you to have an equally hostile view of the world around you, additionally it makes for a more stressfull day to day life. Its important to keep stuff like this in check.

No unit response sounds, pretty much. Also I don't know too much about Diablo!
I'd give Tyrael a shot. I kinda like the whole angel-knight thing.

I cannot resist, and simply must point at that the game shown in video at 1:38 mark is still the best.
