What if the other person also has the art tools ? :P
All title, ownership rights and intellectual property rights in and to the Program, including but not limited to the art assets that are incorporated into the Program, as well as any and all copies thereof and any New Materials (including but not limited to any titles, computer code, themes, objects, characters, character names, stories, dialog, catch phrases, locations, concepts, artwork, animations, sounds, musical compositions, audio-visual effects, methods of operation, moral rights, any related documentation, and "applets" incorporated into the Program) are owned by Blizzard or its licensors.
Wtf blizzard.... seriously... this is the 2nd fucking time you have done this kind of bullshit.
To all who have installed the M3 maxscripts and Blizzard tools, please remove the M3 scripts. They cause an error when launching max with Blizz's tools. The error is specifically caused by Sc2ribbons.
Besides that, it's also good to do that because scripted objects and Art Tools' have duplicating classes.
(repost from M3 thread but if you didn't see it then it's not a repost ;) )
Wouldn't it be funny if that would be the case after the official release? ;) I think Blizzard just wants to have it closed for now, then they will make it more open. Otherwise it would be just killing the community.
Pretty much yes. At least I have this problem and it's on two max's instances so I guess that's not a special case.
But let me ask you something:
Did you signed to the beta test to test the tools, to see if you can successfully export CUSTOM content? I mean, this is beta test so test it!
If not, then just use the models that Blizzard gave you with the installer.
Besides, that wouldn't fly. Scripts assign different classes, names etc. So the Blizzard's plugin would not find it very usefull. You'd have to have importer working with what Blizzard is providing for it to work.
Only geometry, skin and animations would work (and only under condition that you'd specify in the sequences dialog what are the specific ranges).
@maverck: Go
File units are units of a file that you are opening. System units are units that are set up currently in max.
But to trully set the units in max you have to go to CUSTOMIZE -> UNITS SETUP... -> SYSTEM UNIT SETUP. There you can specify how much say centimeters are equal to one max's unit.
ahhh, makes sense :P I have the art tools but I got them so I could give them away if an esteemed modeler didnt get them :P. haha, which Is actually allowed in the license :P. But I also wanted to check out a few things in the documentation.
If I understand the art tools license correctly, then:
Users are not allowed to upload their models to sc2mapster!
Users are not allowed to make models for other people!
Users are not allowed to show their models!
Users are not allowed to upload maps with their selfmade models to SC2mapster!
The only thing you seem to be allowed to do with your work is to give it to Blizzard... I seriously hope that they release the final art tools under a less restrictive license...
I searched through it and read it twice but couldn't find anything like that, could you reference the sections so I know where to look?
As for that "Wtf blizzard.... seriously... this is the 2nd fucking time you have done this kind of bullshit." part, three's a really good explanation for that.
That's just a fast way to deny any content that you or Blizzard doesn't have any rights to.
If it's right or wrong way it's up to you to judge, but Blizzard has shown with the DoTA case that they actually are a company that can be reasoned with.
In the following section they forbid that you to transfer (e.g. upload) "New Materials" to other parties (like sc2mapster).
Quote:
3.C. You are entitled to use the Program for your own use, but you are not entitled to:
(i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Program, or any New Materials, to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Program or any New Materials to others without the prior written consent of Blizzard;
With "New Materials" they seem to mean everything which you can create with the sc editor and art tools:
Quote:
The Program contains software which is utilized as a plug-in for Autodesk's 3ds max® software product to create certain art files that can produce standalone graphic illustrations, as well as operate in conjunction with the StarCraft ® III 'Campaign Editor' (the "Editor") to allow you to create custom levels or other materials ("New Materials") for your personal use in connection with Blizzard’s StarCraft® II interactive games ( “StarCraft II”).
In the section ownership, they explain further what they understand under "New Materials" and they claim that they own everything you make:
Quote:
2. Ownership. The Program is protected by the copyright laws of the United States, international copyright treaties and conventions and other laws. All rights are reserved. The Program contains certain licensed materials, and Blizzard's licensors may protect their rights in the event of any violation of this Agreement.
So they basically count any kind of artwork you make as "New Material"... and claim complete ownership about it.
yeah but still... Posting we own everything you create is kind of a dick move... and by posting this they have restricted mappers, because now if a Copyrighted unit is created for example Goku, and then that copy holder can have blizzard remove it. But if it wasn't restricted like that then a modeler could claim its a spoof or parody of the unit and be protected.
I am just saying there are other ways of protecting them... and they had no right to own DoTA anyways.. they didnt create it, they did have the rights to the units though. just not the game, for example, Say checkers had never been invented but I created it using Chess pieces should the makers of Chess have ownership of my new game :P. that's, its just a dick move... That being said I knew they had done that crap before I had started mapping, but it is VERY annoying. and they have shown that if you make something amazing THEY WILL CLAIM OWNERSHIP even if they had no part in the creation of it.

This sounds like something that could be easily solved by a blue post on battle.net.
Spoof or parody is actually a part of fair use laws. So basically you could include that kind of content.
Didn't WarCraft editor have the same EULA?
if you just take any unit from DoTA2 you could find resembling unit in WarCraft3. They had so much laws with that mod :)
Nope, thats why it was added in Starcraft 2 BECAUSE Blizzard got greedy on that, and they targeted the wrong thing, they would have won if they had targeted likeness of units instead of the game itself. :P
anyways.
Deletarius Popped in for a few. and he said the startools is all that they have, they have nothing else, its the exact same thing that they have :P. so THEY DO NOT HAVE AN IMPORTER :P. so don't expect one from them.
It means you can't profit off modifying assets that are created using Startools. The ownership thing is kinda bull, but it makes sense. They're just covering their asses, not purposefully trying to steal everything people make. They're still a business, and the last thing they want is someone suing them over a screenshot they took and put up online to show off some custom maps.
I would have preferred if they used an agreement similar to what Steam uses for their Workshop.
liscence agreement was likely written by their legal department/team, blizzard is a massive company, the seperation here is huge.
i dont think it's a huge deal. really all you need is the installer and a hots beta key. all of which are obtainable.
theres nothing stopping someone from uploading the zip file somewhere and making it public anonymously. i guess they could uniquely mark the installers.

So I take it I won't be seeing any awesome models from you guys soon? :'(
When you open up any file given by Blizzard you can see boxes, red and blue. There are attachment volumes just displayed as box. Right click -> properites -> uncheck DISPLAY AS BOX will show the true shape of it.
My god, could it be that era of starvation is finally over and we'll have at last all those much needed shockwave, melee slash, Ice/Frost and many other visuals? Modelers, carry us into vibrant and color-filled future =D
Also, I wonder if it's hard to create a moving tornado kind of effect?
There is actually a "new tool syndrome" exist. A musician plays a shitty guitar, a painter painting by dirty coal pieces, a writer writing on napkins, a programmer programming on an old slow computer, a killer kills people with bare hands, sc2 modeller using incomplete exporters.
Then each of them aquires a brand new powerfull tool. Musician gets a badass fender guitar, painter gets all the oil paints and an easel, writer gets a typist with big boobs, programmer gets a high end computer, kiler gets a sniper gun, sc2 modeller gets amazing art tools.
What happens then? Do they start to spam their art? The "New tool syndrome" predicts that they excitedly play with the tool a couple of days and then realize they have nothing to do with it.
