Along with what others have said, another reason remakes are common is that people not only want to rebuild their favorite games, but also iterate on them and fix what they believe.
One main reason that I feel is overlooked here, and why people play remakes, is somewhat related to the established player base. This is not as much for th mapmaker benefit, but more that players play because their friends are playing. Many games today are merely vehicles for socializing, not much different then a theater, a concert or other such events. Sure the event is nice, but many go simply to be with friends.
I couldn't disagree with you more.
I loved warcraft 3's custom maps, and they were much better than "most" of the starcraft 2 maps out there.
PLEASE everyone remake as many good classic Warcraft 3 Custom maps as you can and dont listen to this guy!!
Inventing new original stuff is exciting, but 4/5 times you spend a thousand hours on a map just so Starcraft 2's Shitty as FUDGCICLES popularity system can shut you down and Shitake mushroom all over your dreams. I gave up on trying to make original maps because too many starcraft 2 arcade players are casual and cannot comprehend more than 1 instruction at a time.
With this being said, I am currently working on a remake of an open RPG from Warcraft 3 because there are literally only 1 or 2 decent RPG's on Starcraft 2 right now.
I think the community needs to go in the == EXACT == opposite direction as the OP intended. I think we should be reviving our favorite maps instead of trying to reinvent new shapes for the wheel of fun (and the wheel of fun I am referring to here is Warcraft 3 custom maps because they are inarguably much funner than most Starcraft 2 maps, and we need more maps like this availiable to the arcade).
Well Im going to end my rant and attempt to get a lobby to test the alpha version of my remake of a Warcraft 3 ORPG map, and I must say it is the most fun i've had playing any of the maps I've made since Warcraft 2 to now.

If it's a fantasy style ORPG you'd probably love the WoW models I'm doing.
Okay, well I think "tightly done" remakes (where everything is the same) CAN be good for SOME maps, but Im more a fan of loosely done remakes (such as my map) where I add the features I want, as well as the features I know other players want because I listen to all of the people who play my map and ask them what they want. I think a tightly done remake is fitting for some extremely fun maps that got it right dota obviously got it right... there was no looseness on the remake there.
I've had more players, and gotten my highest yet on top played with my new map using the Warcraft 3 assets which is currently in alpha (ORPG Alpha but a name change will come upon release of beta) and I hit #20 today on NA for a while. I have literally put only 50 hours of work now into it (credit is given to renee in both the description as well as the loading screen for the awesome mod :D), and multiple lobbies were going during peak hours, whereas I have MULTIPLE MAPS where I spent OVER 1000 hours making, and they have gotten nowhere above the top 50 on top played, yet alone had full lobbies fill in under 5 minutes. I think that warcraft 3 remakes are a good idea :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
To me, Renee, you are one of only 3-4 people in all of Starcraft 2, at least in the English speaking side, that has put forth effort into a serious project. I respect that more than anything.
Right now I could name six to eight English-speaking people who worked on their editor project for years, hundreds upon hundreds of hours in their free time. Then you have dozens who did and maintained popular Arcade maps, like Star Battle. Are you implying these projects are not "serious" or what?
The time you spend on making one map is time you cannot spend on making another. Now, I don't want to get too economical here, because original ideas are hard to come up with, so it's not given that people who make remakes have it in them to create original work. But there seems to be such a trend with remakes.
I had no experience with any editor before I worked on Mass Recall and I don't play custom games. I can tell you for a fact that I wouldn't have tinkered with the Galaxy editor for a month, let alone four years, if that hadn't been for the sake of Brood War campaigns.
I knew that *I* would have loved if a mapmaker with enough time and skill had re-created a modern, SC2 versions of these maps. So when I had the time and opportunity to join, I thought that someone had to do it, copy-pasted everything from a previous map and worked from there. If one thing kept me on the project, it was the thought that others could experience the same enjoyment as I did when I was a teen - that I would perpetuate the memory, if you will.
So no, the time I spent on Mass Recall would not have been spent on any other map.
i dont think that there are no inovative maps out there, i even believe alot could be found in the arcade IF the maps could be found. the search function is a time machine to the year 1995 using the same innovative search alogrithms, none. the categories are wrong or misleading for alot of maps. and the shitty popularity system does the rest. the problem is not about us, it's about the current arcade system (and a bit the inaccessability to the editor). the fact that sc2 is already 5 years old and we dont get any concrete information on the plans blizzard has for the arcade, ppl are forced to use other things like unity, unreal or source. the only reason why i am still around is that i am too lazy to switch the system and this inability makes me sad and that's why i am ranting so much about sc2. so dont hate me i am a sad person.
I don't think there's anything wrong with remakes. As long as they stay true to the original and build upon the strengths. It's a great way to learn the editor for new people as well.
I learned how to create maps by looking at other peoples work back in the day. Then again I was 12 when I first started making maps on SC1.
Nobody wants to have to whip out the old SC1 CD and put up with 640x480 resolution, lack of MBS, 12 unit selection max, and all its other archaic features.
