An official response would be cool. I really don't want to reconvert all the sounds in my campaigns.
Yeah, Blizzard, this is unacceptable. You cant just drop something like this on us, I mean I dont expect much when it comes to treating the custom map scene well, but please, atleast show SOME respect for the work we put into our projects. This is one of the few instances that really really aggravates me.
Ah...OGG is much better than mp3 for starcraft2. It has more quality, sound channel has no problem plus file size isnt very big. What's the problem then
They obviously removed it because many musical tracks and sounds that were MP3s were causing copyright issues with custom maps and mods, so to easily get rid of them all, they just removed MP3 support. Simple and efficient solution that affects all maps. They don't have to track all sounds and music files individually that way. I reckon more motivated modders will just convert the files to OGG anyways, but it's one extra step and it might put off a lot of people.
If people bothered to read up about MP3 there is a reason why they may have dropped support...
Quote:
The basic MP3 decoding and encoding technology is patent-free in the European Union, all patents having expired there. In the United States, the technology will be substantially patent-free on 31 December 2017 (see below). The majority of MP3 patents expired in the US between 2007 and 2015.
Since Blizzard is a USA registered company they have to recognize the patent and as such using MP3 decoders is not free for them. Their migration from a game/expansion model to DLC might have violated the MP3 codec licence or resulted in it being uneconomical and forced them to remove it.
If you look at ogg...
Quote:
Ogg is a free, open container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The creators of the Ogg format state that it is unrestricted by software patents[2] and is designed to provide for efficient streaming and manipulation of high quality digital multimedia.
As such they would want to migrate to ogg as there are no issues with licencing in the USA.

I feel like this is the more likely explanation - or it is a bug. In any case, an official statement would be warranted.
I was confident that the release of LotV would introduce the last complicated errors and from here on it would be all about fixing/polishing what's there... Seeing all the errors Nova pack 1 introduced makes me shudder. Think of all the mission packs that are still coming (beyond Nova...) ...
A patch came today but it wasn't meant to fix them it seems. Please acknowledge also the other probs of the editor besides mp3:
- Since the new patch with Nova DLC - Main Menu music in BNet changed to Wings of Liberty music.
- Editor Blank Map starts with Liberty dependency instead of Void dependency
They all stopped working with the lastest nova patch. Is that only me?
@egodbout: Go
No, it's not only you. Darn, cant they just test their patches before they release them? Main menu music to wol, and the mp3s dont work yes.
Alright so this might be a bug and not intentional? Cause I really hope this isnt intentional....
Im already converted all my sounds into .ogg(
OMG! New hero in 'Heroes of the Storm' is Dustin Browder. Watch here!

i did to, what a pain!

Not stating it.. if applicable! is the problem...

Yeah first they make a really complicated editor.
than they made it where all custom models cause the game to flicker.
now this?
What a joke.

This is a bug and we're working on fixing it. Thanks guys.
Lol. I just finished converting all my mp3s to oggs.
@Traysent: Go
Fantastic. Thanks.
...any news on the Mac editor? ;-)
The tray has been sent.
Nice. Thanks alot for clearing this up. This is why I waited for an official response before converting anything.
