i agree on many things said and disagree on some (kappa) but i don't want to clutter, i did want to add however that
there are a few things that have not even been mentioned:
- streaming (and all it curtails/entails) has changed everything
- bnet arcade was never intended to be used (have financial transactions occur with its clients), it is a test drive of a gaming platform (platform which has yet to come (granted) but is coming).
Funny how the "favorite" of the family (brudwar) turned out to be very "small" in comparison to the behemoth ("wow").. if you take this in tow in your reasoning, there are only "afficionados" of the sc realm to contend/satisfy/get revenue from (meaning peanuts, a mere 15/20k players/viewers).
Sitting in my seat i would say they will release a new game through which they will shepperd "community" games.. that will be the result of R&D they did within sc2.
No debate that "more games" is better, that never meant that all good games will find their audience, nothing is ever ensured.
Personally (as my maps are not page 1)
.. i see it as me showcasing my maps to blizzard and them patching my mac galaxy so my awful code works.. as i am a tester of their editor and helpless with it.
The ideas are everything, to them.
Let us not forget those games that do make the cut.. lets imagine ads or skins or audio or ... any of those would generate $.. but not enough and not without infrastructure.
For me that infrastructure is being thought as premature (of course when the people will all make maps and never play them that will change).
But again, as soon as they want to "cash in" they will (upscale style), the only thing is that right now they are trying the 'get it on tv" competitive route.. they are trying to make it into movies 'wrcft 2 3 4 etc" which is a cutthroat bizness.. why would they do such a costly step?
Blizzard faked its community interest, they have spent 4 dollars on their "arcade" since retail.
i happen to think they are going to miss their window when it comes to establishing a "worldwide gaming platform" from being too greedy:
Maybe they want too much too big and are pushing it back as much as possible?
i thought having sc2 / arcade in place when the streaming thing happened would have meant they HAVE to use it.. but all evidence points to blizzard not wanting to make anything of this "testdrive" platform.
So it all points to the next game.. hope it has an editor :D
ps: i use sc2 as a platform, i host photon cycles and my own maps.. and it is possibly the worst platform for both uses! Both for the mapmaker and for the user/players out there that would enjoy my passion/work.
tldr: we are far away from any advance from blizzard, because they think they have nothing to gain from it.
More problems than revenue.. they can't even do it when it is with their "report function" mechanics.. how would they do with financial exchanges?
Making yourself into a marketing exec is nothing to sneer at! Making a site, generating traffic etc .. investing in "selling" your work is not something everyone can do.. and then there is the audience (which has a surplus (a maelstrom) of games forced down their throats.. "how many games" did you play this week?" "How many different" is the question, not how good they are...
i think, providing you make "cinematics" to wet the public's appetite for more, than the sky is the limit.. kickstarters, patreon etc.. so good to launder maffia money!
One should expect lots of people trying to become that intermediary .. showcasing the work "through social networks"
for me.. mmm me i want to do a movie (real live footage unto sc2 footage)
so..
yes i feel "community" mapmakers can/should get money from their work.. i think how when why is complicated though.
I would personally have more motivation if money's involved.
Congrats, that mod is looking mighty sexy.
Patreon seems like the way to go for crowdfunding.
