I was casually mapmaking, when suddenly realized, that screen is black, and mouse cursor not responding. Had to reboot. And then, after opening the editor, waiting while it cleans its cash, I tried to open my map, but all I got is the fat smelly error in my face. After clicking here and there, trying different stuff, I regretfully realized, that map file unrecoverably corrupt.
It would be a tragedy, because alot of mapmaking spent on that map, but some sweet magical foresight made me backup the map yesterday, can you believe it? So, the loss immediately shrinked to the size of one day of intense inspired data-mapmaking. Which was still not fun. I almost resigned myself to this twist of fate, but then TwoDie in the chat reminded me about the editor allegedly autobackups maps. Fun thing: I always knew that there's autobackup, I even remember, that I recommended checking it to someone, who complained in chat about his map fucked. But at this moment after unsuccessful attempts to open the map, I kinda completely forgot about it.
With a sinking heart I started clicking my way through the uncertainity to realize that yes, editor has been doing the sweet motherfucking backups! And imagine my exultation when I opened the folder and found the copy of the map only 20 minutes before the crash!
Welcome to the dark side, it happen to me too one day i lost half of my hair till i remember the backups sweet god yes it was there!
Now i call backups and fuckups forder!:-)
Yeah, I once lost a weeks work on map due to crash&no backup. It was also the first week of making that map. Just couldn't find the will to redo everything afterwards.
Since then editors folder has eaten a few GBs on backups, but at least my heart doesn't skip a beat every time PC/editor crashes for whatever reason.
It's worth noting that the backups "cap" at 1000. I was like, "Why the hell does my mod file have no backups since November?" So yeah, something to watch out for!
i'm saving my map 2 times per minute never heard of backups :)). Cool story though
Who doesn't, it's the ctrl+s reflex. And it didn't help, save file was corrupted. Though, it happened for the first time after almost 4 years of quite intense mapmaking.

It works strange, I saw cap = 5 in editor, and expected to find the 5 last backups, instead found 4 first ones and 1 last, like it doesn't loop through the files, just rewrites latest file if the cap reached.
Omg, it's months in duck years! How you even survived that shock! But you proved your power, you are very strong duck! That was the ultimate challenge. And you have possibly became DuckyTheOverduck (not sure though, worth checking what the elders think about)! And finally ready to face the Duck Mutant in the final fight for the reign over Duck World!

Damn right, I knew you'd be able to read between the lines.
I make backups every day - however, I never had the editor crash as far as I recall. Atleast not without me heavily overdoing something. So yeah, I never needed my map backups even though I have them.

what the hell.. never? it happens to me on a regular basis, it got less since hots (from every hour to every week)
Once I was importing models in, and then editor started crashing about 10 secs after a model was viewed in the model previewer in the importer. I hit ctrl-S really fast after uploads.
You are a bless man if that never happen to you. How many rabbit tails you own Crainy. you are soooo lucky.
Well dont write me off just yet, I once had half a year of work (or something along those lines) on my full-length Starcraft movie project heavily damaged after a PC reinstallation. I cried, but I fixed it all.

i had so many editor crashes in the last 4 years, i cannot even remember how often i had to load a backup

Well, whatever you do, make backups.
Really. Make backups.

I dont work alot with data, only on basic levels, so maybe it has something to do with that.

Still alive and kicking, just busy.
My guide to the trigger editor (still a work in progress)

You ever finish it? I can't remember. I remember some guy made shorts.

Its outdated though, its been out for two years already.
Heres are more recent work of mine, even though its also outdated (not an hour long, though):
What's fun is when you all of a sudden cant add any triggers, for no reason.
Again, like you, I happened to backup the day before that, so the loss was minimal.
Akin to entropy, we must all be vigilant to protect ourselves from the inevitable.
