I'm not a big fan of regular Starcraft 2, I'm a custom map guy. I'm thinking of running a custom map contest.... what kind of contest would you guys like to participate in? Would you want to see judges or public voting?
If you're wanting to make a contest where people make maps from scratch for your site or somesuch, then you want to limit the contest to small games. Preferably by limiting the map size but there are other methods.
An example I would use is a contest to create a 64*64 map with the most replayability. Not too many limits, 64*64 makes the design aspect rather quick, and a vague, open ended condition allows you to more readily judge the contestants. A deadline is essential too, preferably before the 7th of Dec because I'm willing to bet half the forum will mysteriously disappear for a few weeks around that time.
I would like to vote for Team custom map building. This is where multiple ppl build upon 1 map. This allows multiple opinions to create one excellent map. That will also make the map widely ranged in opinions which helps out in making more ppl like the map. This method also forces the contest to have less maps, but in return, you get much better and less junky maps as well. The only problem with this is ppl like to do things by themselves therefore causing it to be hard to group up teams. I was thinking that we could come up with ideas for maps that will be voted later on and finally we will pick the 2 best ones. Then, we split the voters into the 2 maps randomly. Then they, together, will create a new map in the maps section, plan everything out, start building it, put it together, test it, and finally present it 1 week later. Just a bunch of thoughts I was thinking of. How about it?
Interesting ideas... How long do you guys think a contest would need to run to give you sufficient time to build the map? Of course it depends on map size, but if map size is 64x64 then what's a good timeframe, a month?
A team contest would be very interesting, but I'd be afraid some people wouldn't have a teammate they could reliably team up with and would get excluded.
Well, I kinda already said something that would fix that problem. I said "Then, we split the voters into the 2 maps randomly." I'll rephrase that so you can understand it better. We get ppl to come up with custom map ideas. Then, we can create a poll (I think that's what it's called) where ppl vote on their favorite idea. We put all those ideas we voted on and see the top 2. (Or however many you want) Then we take those and search for volunteers to join in. Then we split the ppl, who will be commited to join the contest, and the contest can begin.
Edit: Now that I think it through a little deeper, I think the best way to get the teams is as follows. If it doesn't work, then we'll do the one above.
You could also have ppl come up with ideas and have them be the team leader who basicly controls the group. If that person was just throwing out an idea, then someone else can take the map idea and lead it if they want to. Then we get a bunch of ppl to join in. The will be the "Followers" who do the leader's "Bidding". We will count up how many want to join and THEN decide how many ppl should there be per group. If it ends up stretching the maps to something like this...
Custom Map-2 ppl in group
Custom Map-2 ppl in group
Custom Map-2 ppl in group
Custom Map-2 ppl in group
Custom Map-1 person in group
...Then we may have to kick out leaders and place them as "Followers" unless they decline. If it ends up being uneven, then we may have to decide which map would take the most time to build and place those extra players on those maps.

Oh, and a decent prize.
Imo judges are OK, as long as they're better than Blizzards Custom Map Contest judges. Their decisions were... bad to say the least.
And if you decide to do public voting, please not something like using facebook voting systems.. not everyone has facebook.
Anything is good which doesnt include any kind of judges from Blizzard.D

-----SC-Source.comI have a few questions and a few answers.
Question1) Do you like my team map building idea?
Answer1) I feel that we should makethe map size 64*64 to about 96*96.
Question2) What does everyone else think about size?
Answer2) I think the time limit to make the map should be ranged from 2 weeks to a month (Depends on sizes I put up)
Id say 96*96 is better, as 64*64 is really effing small, and we already had a minigame contest if i remember right...
I think 2 weeks would do it, give it an extension if the people participating need it.
The team thing would be cool :) a 2-man-team or 3-man-team map contest would be fun i think :)

Hope we do group based custom map designing! :D
A maximum size and time limit are great, but I don't think people should be forced to be in teams.
Also, some general kind of theme would be great, like "tower defense", "juggernauts", "the last of the zerglings" or "kittens"?
Intro - a theme would be a great idea.
I do agree that forced teams may not be the best idea.... hrmm... what kind of prize would make you guys want to build a map to participate?

Still looking for ideas for the next contest. Feel free to suggest something and we'll have it up this weekend.
