Hi all, I am setting up a background story for a campaign I am working on and I wanted to make sure my story is not terribly out of line with the official Starcraft story, or with the impressions people had at the end of HotS. So I would like to make sure my own impressions are basically in line with what everyone else thinks. Do the following make sense to you all?
1. The final cinematic in HotS left me with the impression that the zerg evacuated Korhal after Kerrigan killed Mengsk. It seems likely to me that Korhal would still be a center of human activity.
2. HotS also left me with the impression that the other core worlds were overtaken by Kerrigan's minions, and that there is no reason to assume that they were completely abandoned by the zerg after Kerrigan left Korhal.
3. The main body of protoss do not yet know about hybrids.
2. That would be pure speculation on our part, but yeah, Kerrigan doesn't seem to give a crap about humanity, what with her penchant for wiping out multiple planets wholesale just to get revenge on one guy.
3. No. It's impossible that the most technologically advanced race in the galaxy doesn't know about hybrids, which have been seeded on multiple worlds. Zhakul itself (a protoss colony) was mind-controlled by a hybrid. And we can assume that Zeratul also told them. And the survivors of Ulrezaj's hybrid experiments on Aiur.
Considering the things done in WoL and HotS, I wouldn't be surprised if Zeratul forgot to let the rest of the Protoss know about the hybrid and the incomming apocalypse, or if he's waiting for the last moment to do so. :P
Though, if even Raynor's Raiders could discover them, then the most technologically and psionically powerful super-advanced can-bend-the-spacetime-continuum-to-their-will race should've already done so and prepared accordingly, right? ...right?
In a response to 3; I think there's some leeway. Gradius is right in that at the very least some Protoss must undoubtfully have heard the tales, but this doesn't have to mean that the entire Protoss society A) is aware of the idea of hybrids and B) and believes in them. It's plausible that the information has been kept secret and that only the highest councils know, for example - a simple reasoning could be that they don't want their society to fall into mass panic (because Protoss-Zerg hybrids have always been impossible, as far as they know). Alternatively, it could be that the news is widespread but that people simple refuse to believe it. There's a reason Zeratul still cruises around alone without getting any Protoss support.
Pure speculation here, but I believe he tried to tell them and they said he's insane. That's why he's all alone trying to get stuff done. He does have a pretty bad rep with the Protoss higher ups allying with Kerrigan twice now. I think he told them and couldn't really prove it so they banished him or something.
What Zeratul tells them is irrelevant. He is not the only source of information about hybrids. Just because the story makes it seem like the entire protoss race is doing nothing doesn't mean that's the case. Other protoss have still seen hybrids. It's inconceivable that they would fail to get any intel whatsoever on this impending galactic threat when Raynor, Kerrigan, Mengsk, Stukov, and everybody's dog knows all about them. :\
I think they could pull off saying only a few Protoss knew. The preservers and Zeratul's crew. Maybe more i forget. I think any non-Protoss backing up the fact would only hurt the Protoss' decision anything coming out of Kerrigan's mouth is false in their eyes. Especially since Zeratul helped her on Zerus after she murdered them on Kaldir. Not saying it's the logical way to go but I think if they start LoTV with the Protoss agreeing Hybrids exist but don't want to do anything about it would be dumb. It's kind of like choosing shitty option or really shitty option lol.
Although both option make the Protoss look like morons. Blizzard is really going to have to have them kick serious ass if they want to redeem this race.
I wouldn't be surprised if that knowledge was reserved for the upper echelons of the protoss leadership, or most protoss just doubted the hybrids' existence, but I don't think it's a stretch that the protoss protectorate might have had its own run-ins with hybrids.
