Hey hey folks! Another thursday means another Terraining Thursday, and tonight I've got some melee goodness laid up for you folks. Not too long ago over at the terraining boards we had a discussion about terraining melee maps, when somebody popped up the link to TeamLiquid's <A HREF="http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=251461">Map Art Thread. Since then I've been looking into and over the terrain on several melee maps and wanted to show off some of these terrains to you folks tonight. We'll also discuss what makes them good and - more importantly - how you can steal their techniques to make your own maps look awesome.
Be sure to tune in at 9 PM CET - or just use the timer if you're in a different timezone.
The map shown in the screenshot looks really nice. Melee maps are really hard to make (I mean GOOD melee maps, in a "balanced for each race" kind of way), so I'm not against good advice. I have done 2 melee maps so far and they're pretty basic IMHO, I just can't seem to find how to place expansions, so I just end up placing 3 bases in each corner of the map + 2 gold expansions in the middle...
PS: "Ce soir sur SC2Streamsteur: Paysages de mêlée stupéfiants" would be more accurate. ;)
Anyway, I agree with ZealNaga. Melee maps are some of the trickiest things to make look pretty while remaining balanced. Of course, part of that for me could be that I've never been too interested in melee. It's a little hard to get people who are like pros at the game, but also are very good at modding and things like that. I know a few people who are like that, but the point still stands that it's a rare combination.

Fun fact: In a video game company, level designers making campaign maps and those making melee maps are actually not in the same team. It requires different skills but pretty much the same amount of time and work to do a melee map.

Is it on purpose that the thread title is in french?
