What are your thoughts? If game play of the map is based on a single player concept should you try to force a multi player mode? Or do you think people would be happy with single player in the multi player environment of bnet.
a lot of people play custom maps with their friends, so your singleplayer map should have a good polished concept if you wanna see it a bit higher in popularity :)
for the most types of gameplay it isn't that hard to make it multiplayer though :P
Hmmm for my map to have any replay i have to add levels and I came up with a great idea for replay. It's a level based game and basically every once in a while I will change the tileset, rearrange some units, reaarange some triggers and bam new content. Now I could just add more modes down the road from what you say. If single player doesn't have the same replay value just add multi player in a future update.
Well, depends on what your map is about, actually. For example, many tower defense games are singleplayer games, everyone plays his own game with no or little interaction with other players.
So, in a sense, all those page 1 tower defenses are what you describe. If your game can easily be made to multiple players playing simultaneously, why not? However, for some types of maps, this might not be possible.
Also, if we are talking about a map, which only supports one player, it will probably never grow in popularity. You can upload it and play it in battlenet, but the popularity only rises, if the game is opened to public in the lobby. Most people don't know about this or they just don't do it, since there is no reason for a one player map.
They might have changed this. I had a test/demo version of my map on bnet and even when I was testing it by myself it would raise in popularity for however long I spent in the map.
Playing a TD singleplayer isn't quite the same though... I wouldn't play a TD without being a little social with the rest of the team... That's just me though

Single player can definetly be succesfull in bnet. It might not last as long as Sotis and such, but it can easilly reach page 1 (seen this before).

there's a 1 player + spectator micro trainer in the 2nd page
The popularity will be there for a short time, and only people who see it on a site will play it, I would post it to every place you possibly can.
