I'm fairly new at map making but I really wanted to make a particular arcade map. I'm going to post the questions I haven't been able to solve by looking through tutorials. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have spent quite a bit of time in the last week learning everything I can but I'm completely stumped on a few things.
First:
I would like to create a new structure. This structure is very similar to defensive wall 45 gate large. However I need to make the following modifications and I believe I need to make a new structure from scratch:
The gate is controlled by all user players
there are 4 gates in total. One facing NW, SW, NE, SW
The gates are upgradeable (can research shields and HP bonus) which requires me to link it to a separate building (generator)
The gates are lowered and raised by players
The gates are repairable via player SCVs
the gates are destructable (as in won't raise if life =0) Pretty sure thats already built into the gate.
I can make buttons and the gates already come with a lower/raise morph which is actually causing me a lot of problems. Originally I thought I could just duplicate the gates and rename them and edit the footpaths for the raised gates. That may be so but every time I do this it does some funky stuff and I'm not really sure whats going on. I have read through a few tutorials on gates and I just can't get this to work or understand what I'm doing wrong. I love these forums and this community is very helpful!
Can you be more specific about what sort of problems the morph is causing?
Does the lowered gate not have the same stats/upgrades as your raised gate or vica versa? If so, you might want to check that you've applied these changes to the lowered version too.
If you've duplicated the gates, make sure you've given them a new morph ability or changed the existing ability, so that it morphs them into your custom gates, as the default one would revert them to the vanilla gates.
Thanks for your response. I'm not sure exactly how to explain this but basically I'm having problems unlinking the duplicated versions from the orginals. What I want is to make 4 gates completely independent. When I do this the name of the original just changes to the duplicated name. So when I rename my new gate it changes the original campaign gate. The reason I need completely new gates is to edit the foot path for each gate which I can do.
I want to make a new structure as its own parent but with all the attributes of the original. The lowered version will be new as well that it morphs into. Ive been trying to get this to work for days but its confusing the hell out of me.
Sounds like your gates are sharing the same Text Key as the vanilla ones. Go to the "Name" field of your gate unit, and look at the Text Key (something like "Units/Name/Gate45Raised"), and then look at the original gate. It should be the same. Change yours to something different (ie "Units/Name/NewGate45Raised) and they should no longer share names.
As a sidenote, don't worry if two of your units share the same name, that's all they'll share. Footprints and stats will still be independent.
My next question is cash for kills. I know how to edit a unit so that when it dies the killing player gets a bounty. I want my map to be team friendly however and give all players a bounty for kills.
example: zergling is killed: all players get 1 mineral, hydrolisk is killed: all players get 5 minerals. If someone can help with that trigger it would be awesome :). I'm so excited about making this map.
Ugh I'm going to need a step by step on this wall thing. I really can't figure out how to duplicate it without it affecting the original. Here's what I am doing. I go to Fortress gate - 45 gate large east and duplicate it. When I do that it automatically creates a duplicate copy of the morphed lower version. These show up in black text. I am selecting all of the sub catagories when duplicating. actors, units ect. As soon as I rename both duplicated copies the orginals change with it.

First of all, welcome to SC2Mapster!

Okay I'm about to look at that right now.
