I am working around with implementing some custom abilities for skills, but can't seem to get the buttons to look just right. they bleed over the entire area of the button instead in an unattractive way, if you've ever tried to make your own buttons you know what I mean. What's the best way to make them look like they are uniform with the other Bliz-made buttons?
what problem are you having with the images?
Do they get messed up (not stretched)? ifso then the image type your using is incorrect (Border/Endcap/Normal/...)
Or do they get stretched? ifso then you are using an image that contains only 1 state instead of either 2 or 3 states.
In case of it getting messed up here is a text-explanation of the texture types: Image Textures explained
In case of it getting stretched then:
If the image is for a dialog button or anything else that requires 2 states then you have the following layout:
[Normal Image]
[MouseDown Image]
these 2 images described above should be in the same image on top of eachother with the same dimensions.
so if you have a normal image of 36x36, then you should also have a mousedown image of 36x36 in that same imagefile so the total format of that image containing both is 36x72.
It's not a matter of stretching or dimensions. I am making my custom buttons using photoshop to convert them to .dds files so they are the perfect size. they just bleed all over the frame and don't look right alongside the other buttons.
Note how this picture "looks" like a SC2 button, not just a picture. it has that green-frame stuff. See what I mean?
You kind of lost me, I'm not sure what border/endcap/normal are and I can't understand that Wiki article about texturing.
i don't know where you got this pic but it looks like 'green stuff' which would border on the image is actually done manually as part of image and simply matched to original color button frame.
You can clearly see, especially in lower part with weapon 'stripes', how its under that inside border.
How about posting a screenshot of the button that's causing you problems? The "green stuff" is the default button image for the terran race, which I believe gets overlayed (Or underlayed?) the picked image for that button. But, if I remember right, all sc2 buttons are faded out around the edges/have a black border. Maybe resize your images to be a few pixels smaller and center them, so that there's nothing behind/above the default button image's border - or just change the alpha channel around the edges to be a shade of gray instead of white. (In any case, make sure the edges are at least partially transparent)
I hope that helped, those are just random guesses as I've never had this problem before.
Select the image, shrink the selection by a small amount (I use 3 pixels), invert the selection and erase everything in the selection. This will give you a 3 pixel transparent border which will allow the border to be visible.
I believe I go through this process in this video although that's pretty old and a bit crummy ;0
EDIT nope I don't show it in that video, I just make most of the image transparent ;0

ow you are talking about the commandcard buttons, the images you set as the face value in the data editor?

I've tried a few different screenshot programs but they work with SC2. Will definitely try just deleting outside corners from the .dds file.

you hit print screen and it's saved in my documents \ sc2 \ screentshots
