I've started messing around with a SC2Layout file, I imported it, and got it all hooked up in the data module. Hooray.
However, when I go to change the SC2Layout file, I do not know how to easily make the SC2 Editor grab the updated version. The Import manager does not seem to show a simple way to do this. Surely there is another way than to save it as a different name, import the new file, and hook up to the new one?
Normally stuff will be properly updated, if you do not move it around after importing before saving, so if the structure of your import ressource folder is the same in your map, all files will be updated properly with only 1 new import and 1 save. I'm not quite sure if I had problems with that and layout files, but I guess I hadn't.
"Import, move and click yes on replace, save" won't update files properly atm.
Also you could try to open the layout file directly in a mpq editing program like WinMPQ and edit the file inside the map directly.
to me, it's hacky because the editor doesn't just grab the most recent version of the file, but is making a copy that I can't edit when it imports. I'm just nit-picky though.

In regards to updating an sc2layout override file, ive only been doing it like:
Edit the layout on the notepad.
Import the new version into the map, it will automatically replace the old one. (you dont have to re-link stuff in the object edtior if its with the same name)
Save.
Done.
i dont see how this is hacky =S and i dont get what u mean by the editor "making a copy that I can't edit when it imports"

Then your doing something wrong.....

import updated file
save

I will being to sound like a preacher, but whenever you have to edit imported stuff often, it is usually saner to just save your map as an sc2compoenets folder, which is pretty much an unpacked map/mod, and edit right away. No reimporting hassles.
Unfortunately, you can't just "import" the file. You have to make sure nothing is selected to re-import it, else it will create additional sub-folders like a maniac for no apparent reason. You have to delete and save the map so that nothing gets selected, then import and save again. It's really tedious work.

you can change where the import is going at the screen where you select which files you want to import.
At the top of that screen is an input field which you just have to make blank to import to root.
This is probably a really simple question, but...

Thanks
lol is that really the best way? Seems super hacky, but is definitely more efficient than what I was doing.
thanks

Its not hacky at all...
all you have to do is import the updated file again and save and then it will work....
how is that hacky?
if you want to save the file as a different name.... import it under a differnt name.... update the data section and you should be good to go...
