Hey guys, Ive been working on a region capture tutorial / demo open map. I'm trying to shade the captured area with the players color. Currently I'm using the AOENukeCursor Model with a custom splat actor.
Several reasons I am using this Model / Actor combination
It doesn't clip through the terrain. As far as I can tell it perfectly conforms to the shape of the terrain, ie; hills, cliffs, valleys
It is tint-able I can set its tint color to = the player color, some player colors make it hard to see
It is scalable. I can increase the scale of the cursor to cover an entire region and it still correctly conforms to the shape of the terrain.
The draw backs Ive had with use this model are
The model has a specific Opacity that I can not seem to change. When I scale it up, It gets harder and harder to see due to the innate transparency
It doesn't really fill in a region to well when scaled up because its really a cursor not a texture.
Really looking for feed back on this kinda stuff.
Interesting related topics Id love feed back on.
Playing video on actor/models. If you have a splat actor/ model. Is it possible to change the texture or play video for its texture?
Setting an actor's size with out scale but by specifying a width and height.
Other models I could try using in game. I have tried some of the ground textures but they don't handle the scale + conforming to the terrain the way the cursors do.
Kinda surprised to have no replies after 3 hours. I would think someone would have something to say about this topic, even if their thoughts on it are rubbish all thoughts are welcome.
Hopefully I get some replies after this shameless(but not spam) bump.
I think the problem is in the model. This model is of type decals so it blends over terrain.
1. Play video texture only possible on specific models that has it. I have no idea on modeling as to how to make this work
2. yes you can, send actor message set scale and you can scale in z x y.
3. Some decals model may help
So its a specific property of the model that allows it to handle the ability to render video on it? Would it be possible if someone were to make a 2d splat model and create it in a manner that supports rendering video?.... Be awesome if somebody could point me in the direction of someone who does this kinda stuff.
For the scaling I generally do use the X scale, Y scale, Z scales but i was thinking of actually saying "Set the actor/model to be X wide" X being a distance value relative to the distance value of point to point in triggers.
Well I'm not very familiar of what you mean by decals? A lot of the models in game are basically decals. Is this a specific type of "actor/model"? I use the "space platform ground decals" Ive tried most of these decals and they have several drawbacks.
When scaled they do not conform to the terrain well, it seems that they conform, but only up to a specific variation/height differential. Where as AOE cursors seems to handle the height variation flawlessly(on my test map, at most a hill that slopes with a difference of at most 3 height).
They don't tint very well, or some times too well.( I'm unsure if you can change the opacity of them or not, wasn't testing that when I was going through the variations of this model.)
Even tho you desecrated the artist tavern by posting requests in the general section...
Ideally, you would want a custom decal with a team color and some alpha.
As far as terrain conforming goes, I can not confirm that they stop conforming when scaled up, but I also fail to see the issue.
You can just change the scale to something that works, and is half the size of what you need. Then place 4 of them. Or something similar.
And while this may work, I doubt it will look up to standards ingame, as a design solution.
Looking at multiple, often ugly colors, during a game is not something I'd consider awesome.
I suggest looking into other methods of ownership indication.
Well the goal here is not just to show ownership. Its also to semi-paint the terrain.... hence the new thread.
And what I am trying to basically use a custom model for. Explicitly a splat model that can
conform to the terrain regardless of the height variations
Solid white color ,so its easily tint-able
be awesome if it supported video textures.
Using the AOEcursorsplat I scale it up to the point where its about 30 in-game distance wide(that's larger then they really need to be Its just they work fine that size.) The AOE cursors look pretty good that large. Its just for one thing a cursor and two its way too transparent scaled up that far. They also support tinting.
Im also going to be using it not just to define the region, but AREA influence scaling it up and down. Looks pretty good when I animate it getting larger and smaller.
Just need a better splat model to use.
So yeah Im a complete noob as to how to go about doing any 3d modeling. I would be very interested in learning some of the basics though. Couple things holding me back.
I have no idea what a good Freeware 3d tool is. Ive tried a couple and have been completely lost when trying to use them. Is there a good noobie one out there?
Hello! Were you able to make a working code and date? Maybe there is a working example. Also now I'm trying to achieve a beautiful color overlay on the region.
