Because player names are returned as a Text type, and it does not support any operations other than replacing parts of it.
Maybe someone has a workaround for this problem.
Otherwise, the native function name is StringSub(). Don't think it has a GUI analog.

in my leaderboard i'd like to have players names set to a max length, by only taking the first x letters of their names.
Now, i know how to get their names, but i can't figure out a way to make a substring of them.

The GUI analog is called Substring.
But Otixa is right, you cannot get the player's name as a string. And you can't work with texts >.<
