After three weeks of no WTE because of the community contest that was going on, we're back in action! A lot of suggestions for a WTE have come in from people suggesting I'd do something with the submissions of the community contest, and that's what I've decided to run with. Though it is hard to literally let people work with the submissions of the contest (as most of them are quite intricate pieces of their own), I've decided to hold a Joint-Terraining Exercise based on the theme of the fan-favourite submission (Umojan Research Ship by Nebuli): the idea for this week is that someone starts off terraining a space ship and then uploads the terrain for others to work on it.
The main idea behind a Joint-Terraining Exercise (JTE) like this one is that one person posts "I'm going to work on the terrain", works for a couple of hours at most and then re-uploads what he has for the next person to join in. More detailed rules can be found here, but for now let's just see how it goes.
So yes: the first person to start on this is free to begin terraining a spaceship of his liking, after which he should post up what he's done in the thread. Curious to see how long we'll last before we descend into chaos :D
I wanted to put the protoss creates at an angle 135 angle so that it looks like cannons but then again i dont know how to angle a unit,
now for the hybrid generators i will like then to be gold color but i dont know were in DATA or how to work the cutscene editor

Mhuahahaha! I'll try to make something after supper in like 1-2 hours if no one takes it. I'm really curious to see how ingenious we will be.
And remember to use the All Doodad pictures! I'm sure that will make more creative creations!
The fun thing about JTE is you can really really focus on something small and not worry about the rest. If you can give ideas to others with a small group of doodads, that's all you want!
Protoss Crates are also doodads. You should use doodads instead of units, they are much easier to modify scale, pitch, etc. If a unit is not a doodad, then just create it like I did for the Nexus and the Force Field.
Note: A good way to prevent floating doodad like your Nexus, you can duplicate it and make it up side down perfectly matched with the other one. It creates a good mirroired effect. Although it does not always look good. In this case, it's fine. I like the floating scaled mineral over the nexus on both sides.
Note: Deformed known units or structures can become much more interesting than normal scale.
I add some Hots starship Towers and decal protoss
also mix the assimilator with a forge making it look like a small ship
also added starships vents but not so shure if it looks ok
Hahahahaha... One thing I must say already is that I don't like to actually use usual buildings as doodads. They just don't fit. If really we want to add those, we should scale them differently, put them in angle, whatever, but in a way to don't recognize them. The WTEs are all about using doodads originally. If you just throw some melee buildings here and there... that's not original.
What is original in the lastest additions though are the decals, the things added in the cliff, the terrain object... I was expecting more something like an original clump mix of doodads. And I believe that in a JTE, you want to leave alot of open room for the others to start their own little project within the whole project. Right now I feel like wargirl just did 90% of what we see... and twisting this in a way to make it looks epic without too much modifying what is in place will be tricky... But I guess that's the point of JTE somewhere in there... to deal with different skilled terraininers, different ideas, different perceptions...
Soooo... wargirl (only you can read this ok ? eh.. xD ) If you work again later on, try to focus on a very very small part of the ship instead of trying to fill it with anything. Leave some place for others and try to be more creative on that specefic small part. Think of my cockpit, I passed like 2 hours on that and did not touch anything else (almost). Maybe make the engine or something special on the ship? What could be on a protoss ship? Sleep room? Multi-heigh terrain? Making under the ship? Lazers? But always stick to a small part and make it detailled.
If we all put 2-3 hours together, that will become a 10-15-20...or more hours of work map and could be epic.
I actually downloaded the map(s) and man, it's impressive to see it in real time instead of some picture! "I want to join to" is what I'd like to say but there really isn't anything I can do here since I am more of a "from scratch" modeler more than I am a terrainer. Good luck on this to you guys!
Hey guys, I'm considering jumping back into SC2 terraining after my 2 year hiatus.
Here's my contribution, started out attempting to make a gun battery but I changed my mind half way through. I'm not entirely certain what I ended up with, but I guess I would call it a fusion engine of some sort.
added some gun Hybrids Cannons upside down to the side and rear
the forge were made in to doodats so they can be manipulated
the Gateways also are doodats at angles giving the felling that they are some cannons
It's funny how your focus is about guns, defense, cannons... instead of Protoss basis of anti-battle mind... Like, Protoss if they had could, they would simply not use weapons. A ship doesn't need weapons at all ;) But whatever =P
Come on! A JTE is not only for 3 people, someone else come and add some great stuff! You can do it.
I wish I could. I really feel like mapping, but I have an exam tomorrow morning that I need to study for... and then I've got a grand two days to study for an exam on I get on thursday afternoon. And then I'll have half a day to pack before I leave for my brothers' wedding in Spain.

Edit: Tried some lightning for fun (not saved). In my mind, Protoss must be all gold-ish and shiny, bright lights. I think I got that.

(taking notes of what I am thinking... what about floating thing, blue fire and animal decoration... I'll try to incorporate that)
