I decided to add some critters on my maps and I'm not sure what critters fit for each planet so lets make a list. Or what critters are used on Blizzard maps.
Cows and sheeps fit well for all planets that have some sort of farming. (Agria, Haven at least)
Lyote and Scantipede are critters for dry areas such as Mar Sara + other wastelands.
You can always use composites. Do not forget the guardiam missile model that is not used ingame that looks like a nice flying bug or the zerg vent bugs from the doodad.
Also do not forget the scantipede for any dry terrains.
Still why limit yourself to alredy existing tilesets and not make your own combination?

Agree with DrSuperEvil. I almost never set my maps on existing planets in the canon lore simply because I often have my own ideas about the place I want to create. My maps end up with any number of assorted tilesets, whatever I feel like using. For example I did a swamp map recently using tiles from Agria, Redstone, Zhakul'das, and Haven. Why not just make up your own planet/life-having moon and put whatever critters you feel like on it? (And besides, honestly, I've noticed while replaying the campaign recently that a lot of the critters are NOT limited to just one map. The Lyote appears on pretty much all the desert/wasteland ones.)
I figure that the easiest way to explain critters appearing on multiple planets is simply that they're either different, similar creatures (just give them a new name, or some like the Lava Crab could easily be just a descriptive name for any number of critters on different planets) or, even easier - at different points the critters stowed away on ships visiting planets and ended up on other planets hense the cross population.
Ultimately it's down to what you feel like, as has been said, just giving some possible story explanations to justify it, as I do ^_^
Just another thought on this matter: Some critters are easily justifiable for pretty much any tileset with Terran inhabitation, specifically the Automaton (it's a robot!) and the Cow/Sheep, as I imagine they bring their livestock with them rather than just always find convenient local creatures. Same goes for the Dog probably.
This is an interesting discussion. Remember Thrikodias released a Bengalaas model, and GhostNova released a giant scropion model that could be used for the Scantid. And if you like easter eggs I released a Metroid ;-)
Yet Kueken531 made a simple scantipede into a horrific creature of firey destruction using texture swap and a few model attachments. You can easily make existing models into something new. For example the guardian bug like missiles or the zerg vent creatures can be made into a decent critter in 30 mins.
@DrSuperEvil: Go true true... and I'm going to "nick" a lot more, I'm working on a critter pack with most od the doodad birds, a shark, and even a fish.
Zealot zergling baneling prototype metroid and humanoid. Only so many easter eggs in one doodad. Next you will want the junk cube texture ones in poster format.

Have to agree with you. I browsed some campaign maps and realized that there are very few critters. I'm not sure about Ursadaks and Karaks yet.

IE the one you nicked from the cannastar tubes.

Maybe you could liberate some of the other hybrid organisms from the stasis tubes?
@Kanitala: Go Lol, I tried, but they are all the same model, 'conjoined' baneling twins, not useful at all.

Hehe. In my defense I didn't have the editor open at the time to check :P

Next you will say the Galactica and StarTrek ships in the junk pile got there by themselves! Not to mention Voltron.

@DrSuperEvil: Go
There are working models for those ships.
Moria (terrain same as Mar Sara, could make slightly more twilight lighting): Scantipede
Tyrador: Lyote, Automaton
And for me it is important to stick to the Lore, and base everything on it, whether I like it or not. When I release my whole missions story.
